During Windows 11 Autopilot, first enable diagnostics in the Enrollment Status Page (ESP), then try Ctrl+Shift+D to open the Autopilot Diagnostics Page and export its logs to a USB flash drive. For a screenshot of the visible screen, try Windows+Shift+S when the capture surface is available; Snipping Tool is not documented as available on every OOBE or ESP screen, so verify it on your deployment image or use a VM-host screenshot or camera as a fallback.
Choose the right capture method for the moment
A screenshot records what the deployment displayed; Autopilot diagnostics and event logs help explain why it displayed it. Preserve both where possible, with timestamps or clear filenames that let you match the image to the exported evidence.
| Method | What it captures | Availability and persistence | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows+Shift+S | Image snip: rectangle, freeform, window, or full screen | Requires the Snipping Tool capture surface to be available. Save the capture from Snipping Tool; Windows 11 documentation also describes automatic saving to the Screenshots folder. | A visible error, progress state, or selected part of the screen. |
| Windows+Shift+R | Rectangular video snip | Supported where the relevant Snipping Tool feature is available; availability on every OOBE/ESP surface is not established. | A short visual record of a changing screen, if supported. |
| Ctrl+Shift+D | Autopilot Diagnostics Page and exportable deployment evidence | Microsoft documents this shortcut during OOBE. Export logs to a thumb drive. | Collecting diagnostic records at a failure or milestone. |
| VM host screenshot or external camera | Visible screen, depending on host or camera framing | Operational fallback if the Windows capture UI is unavailable; this is not an Autopilot feature. | Recording an OOBE/ESP screen without relying on Snipping Tool. |
These methods differ in evidence value: a screenshot shows the screen state, while the diagnostics export and Windows event records provide troubleshooting detail. Capturing an image need not replace or interrupt the deployment, but opening a diagnostics or command interface may change what is visible. Record the time and deployment stage before switching screens.

Prepare Autopilot diagnostics before deployment
Enable the relevant options in the Autopilot Enrollment Status Page profile before starting the run. Microsoft documents the diagnostics page for Windows 11 user-driven deployment with a work or school account; do not assume identical availability for other deployment modes or account types.

- Connectivity: Includes WiFi, Bluetooth, and LAN for wireless and wired connections
- Memory: Features 16GB DDR4 RAM for smooth multitasking and performance
- Storage: Combines 500GB SSD and 1TB HDD for ample storage space
- Graphics: Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 for crisp visuals and video playback
- Design: Sleek desktop tower with black color and slim profile for modern look
- In the Intune admin center, open the Enrollment Status Page profile used by the deployment. The exact navigation can vary as the admin center changes; locate the ESP profile assigned to the target device or group.
- Enable Show app and profile configuration progress so the ESP presents the configuration progress experience.
- Enable Turn on log collection and diagnostics page for end users.
- Save the profile and confirm that the device is assigned the intended profile before deployment.
- Use a clearly labeled USB flash drive for exported logs. Keep it available at the device during OOBE.
Enabling diagnostics beforehand avoids discovering at the failure screen that the intended diagnostics page was not turned on for that profile. Microsoft documents the profile settings and supported scenario in its Windows Autopilot deployment guidance.
Capture the visible screen with Snipping Tool
When the Windows shell and Snipping Tool capture interface are available, press Windows+Shift+S. Choose the required image mode—rectangle, freeform, window, or full screen—then make the capture. Open the Snipping Tool notification or app to review and save it. Current Windows 11 documentation also describes automatic saving of captures to the Screenshots folder; confirm the file exists rather than relying on clipboard contents alone.
- Note the time, device, deployment stage, and visible error or progress state.
- Press Windows+Shift+S and select the appropriate snip mode.
- Capture the screen. Avoid including passwords, recovery keys, or unrelated personal information.
- Save the image with a recognizable name, such as
device-stage-2026-09-29-1430.png. - Verify the image is saved and pair it with the diagnostics export from the same run.
For a short recording of a changing region, try Windows+Shift+R to start a rectangular video snip where supported. A video can show a transition or repeated stall that a still image cannot, but it is not a substitute for the diagnostic logs.

Microsoft documents the Snipping Tool shortcuts and modes for Windows 11, but does not say its UI is available on every OOBE or ESP surface. If the shortcut does nothing, do not infer that Autopilot itself is broken; use a VM host capture facility or an external camera, and continue collecting Autopilot diagnostics.
Open and export the Autopilot Diagnostics Page
At the relevant point in OOBE, press Ctrl+Shift+D. Microsoft states that Windows Autopilot Diagnostics are available in OOBE and documents this keystroke to open the Diagnostics Page. If the page appears, use its export option to write the logs to a thumb drive. The export includes a CSV hardware hash.
- At the failure or milestone screen, record the time and what was displayed.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+D, or choose View Diagnostics if that option is shown.
- Connect the labeled USB flash drive if it is not already connected.
- Use the Diagnostics Page export control to save the logs to the drive.
- Preserve the exported files without renaming or editing them, and note which device and run they belong to. Keep the CSV hardware hash with the export and handle it as device-identifying information.
If the Diagnostics Page is not available, check that the ESP profile has diagnostics enabled and that the deployment is a supported Windows 11 user-driven scenario with a work or school account. Availability can also depend on the exact OOBE screen and image; use the event logs and another capture method rather than treating the shortcut as guaranteed on every screen.

Microsoft’s instructions are in Manually Register Devices with Windows Autopilot.
Use Command Prompt at OOBE when troubleshooting requires it
At an OOBE sign-in prompt, Shift+F10 opens Command Prompt. If you need PowerShell, start it by entering powershell.exe. This is a command interface, not a screenshot method: use it only for a specific troubleshooting task, and record what commands you run so your evidence has context.
- At the sign-in prompt, press Shift+F10.
- At Command Prompt, enter
powershell.exeand press Enter if a PowerShell session is needed. - Run only commands appropriate to the deployment issue and your organization’s support procedure.
- Close the command window when finished and return to the deployment screen if possible.
Microsoft’s OOBE guidance documents this access path in Manually Register Devices with Windows Autopilot. A command prompt may not be present or usable at every screen, so do not rely on it as the sole capture or diagnostics route.
Review event records after the deployment attempt
After the run, inspect Event Viewer on the device at Application and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > ModernDeployment-Diagnostics-Provider > Autopilot. Correlate event timestamps with the screenshot and exported diagnostics. A screenshot without a timestamp or deployment-stage note is much less useful when reviewing a long event stream.
The Autopilot event log can help establish what happened around a visible failure; preserve the original exported diagnostics alongside any notes or screenshots. Microsoft’s ESP and deployment documentation is available at Windows Autopilot user-driven deployment.

| Symptom | Likely explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Windows+Shift+S does nothing | Snipping Tool capture surface may not be available in this OOBE/ESP state. | Use a VM host screenshot feature or external camera. Continue with Ctrl+Shift+D if OOBE diagnostics are enabled. |
| No Diagnostics Page appears after Ctrl+Shift+D | The ESP option may not be enabled, or this deployment mode/account/screen may not support the page. | Verify the assigned profile and supported Windows 11 user-driven work/school account scenario; collect event evidence after the run. |
| Export cannot be saved | No usable thumb drive is connected, or the selected target is unavailable. | Connect a clearly labeled USB flash drive and retry the export. Preserve the original files and record the run identity. |
| Screenshot exists but the cause remains unclear | An image captures appearance, not necessarily the underlying deployment event. | Pair its timestamp with the Diagnostics Page export and Autopilot event log records. |
| Shift+F10 does not open a prompt | The shortcut is documented at an OOBE sign-in prompt, not guaranteed on every screen. | Return to the sign-in prompt if appropriate, or use the other evidence paths; do not assume the command shell is universally exposed. |
| Capture appears missing after the snip | The image may remain in the Snipping Tool workflow or clipboard rather than in the folder expected. | Open Snipping Tool, save the capture explicitly, and verify the resulting file. |
Keep the evidence usable and safe
- Use a filename or accompanying note that identifies device, run, stage, and local time.
- Keep the screenshot, USB diagnostics export, and any Event Viewer notes together.
- Do not expose credentials, recovery information, or unnecessary personal data in shared evidence.
- Preserve the exported CSV hardware hash with the device’s support records and restrict access according to your organization’s data-handling rules.
- For virtual deployments, check whether the hypervisor provides a host-side capture method before the OOBE run begins.
This workflow distinguishes the screen evidence you can see from the deployment evidence Windows exports. The shortcut for diagnostics is documented for OOBE; Snipping Tool availability on every OOBE/ESP surface is not.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Windows Autopilot have a dedicated screenshot shortcut?
No dedicated Autopilot screenshot shortcut is documented here. Windows+Shift+S invokes Snipping Tool where its capture surface is available; Ctrl+Shift+D opens Autopilot diagnostics during OOBE.
Can I take a screenshot of ESP progress without interrupting Autopilot?
A screen capture records the visible state, but the Snipping Tool interface is not established as available on every ESP screen. If unavailable, capture from the VM host or use an external camera.
Do Autopilot diagnostics include a screenshot?
The documented export is diagnostic logs, including a CSV hardware hash; capture the screen separately if you need an image.
