To paginate a long HTML table in ABCpdf, render it with AddImageHtml or AddImageUrl, then add pages with AddImageToChain until Chainable(id) returns false. Put column headings in <thead> if they should repeat, and use ABCpdf’s ABCChrome or ABCGecko HTML engine for repeated table headers and footers. For tables built in code rather than HTML, use the PDFTable/Table Class helper pattern shown in WebSupergoo’s Large Table Example.
Choose the table layout approach
ABCpdf’s HTML renderer can flow rendered content across PDF pages, but the first render does not by itself create every page. You must continue its image chain. For existing web markup, HTML pagination is usually the direct route: it keeps your table content in HTML and delegates layout to the selected rendering engine. If your application needs explicit control over column widths, padding, row construction, or page-aware logic, use a programmatic table helper instead.
| Approach | Best fit | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| HTML table plus chained pages | Tables already represented as HTML or rendered from a URL | Pagination follows the HTML engine’s layout and break behavior; continue the image chain until complete. |

The engine matters. WebSupergoo’s HTML-to-PDF guide associates repeating headers and footers with the ABCChrome or ABCGecko engines. The documentation also notes that ABCpdf 12.1, released in Spring 2021, introduced a WebKit-based engine. Rendering and pagination can differ by engine and release, so test with the configuration you will deploy.
Paginate an HTML table with a chained render
Render the HTML once, retain the returned chain ID, and keep adding pages while ABCpdf reports that the content remains chainable. The official API pattern is:

using var doc = new Doc();
doc.Rect.Inset(72, 72);
int id = doc.AddImageHtml(html); // or AddImageUrl(url)
while (doc.Chainable(id)) {
doc.Page = doc.AddPage();
id = doc.AddImageToChain(id);
}
doc.Save("paged-table.pdf");
Here, html is the HTML string your application wants to render. If the source is a page available by URL, use AddImageUrl(url) for the initial render instead. The important part is assigning the result of every AddImageToChain call back to id; that returned ID is what the next loop iteration checks and continues.
- Create a
Docand set the document rectangle or margins appropriate to your report. - Call
AddImageHtmlorAddImageUrlto begin the HTML render and save its returned chain ID. - While
Chainable(id)is true, add a PDF page, set it as the current page, and callAddImageToChain(id). - Save only after the chain is exhausted.
Do not assume a fixed number of pages from the number of rows. The rendered height depends on the actual content and layout, and the API’s chainability check is the completion condition in the documented pattern. For long tables, make sure the full loop runs before saving; otherwise later portions of the rendered content will not be added by this sequence.
Repeat table headings and footers
Use semantic table sections: place the column headings in <thead>, data rows in <tbody>, and a closing or total row in <tfoot> when it should function as a table footer. WebSupergoo’s HTML-to-PDF guide identifies these elements as the mechanism for repeating headers and footers on paged media, and ties that behavior to the ABCChrome or ABCGecko HTML engines.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors<table>
<thead>
<tr><th>Item</th><th>Qty</th><th>Amount</th></tr>
</thead>
<tbody>
<tr><td>Example</td><td>2</td><td>$10</td></tr>
<!-- many rows -->
</tbody>
<tfoot>
<tr><td colspan="2">Total</td><td>$10</td></tr>
</tfoot>
</table>
A <thead> in the markup is not a promise that every engine or configuration will render it identically. Confirm the chosen engine supports the repeated-header/footer behavior, then inspect a PDF spanning several pages to ensure the header appears where expected and the footer is positioned as intended. This is especially important when migrating between ABCpdf releases or changing the HTML engine.
Build a table programmatically when layout control matters
ABCpdf does not include table-drawing routines itself. WebSupergoo’s Large Table Example uses a PDFTable/Table Class helper to position table elements. Its pattern sets relative column widths, cell padding, and header repetition, then adds rows and styled text while observing the current page number:
var table = new PDFTable(doc, 6);
table.SetColumnWidths(new[] { 2.0, 1.0, 3.0, 2.0, 1.0, 4.0 });
table.CellPadding = 5;
table.RepeatHeader = true;
foreach (var row in rows) {
table.NextRow();
table.AddTextStyled(row);
}
doc.Save("large-table.pdf");
This is the documented usage pattern, not a complete standalone type definition: PDFTable is a helper class used by the example, not an ABCpdf table-drawing method. Follow the full Table Class example for the helper’s implementation and supported styling. The example illustrates a large table over five pages; that is an example output, not a page-count guarantee for other data or layouts.

Compared with HTML, a programmatic helper gives your code explicit column sizing and cell padding, and the example can inspect doc.PageNumber as rows are added. HTML is more natural when the content already exists as markup, but its page placement depends on renderer layout and pagination heuristics. Choose based on where the table originates and how much direct control your report code requires.
Control page breaks without relying on table-row breaks
ABCpdf documentation supports the CSS properties page-break-before, page-break-after, and page-break-inside. They are most dependable on visible block-level content. A completely empty <div> may not create a break; use a non-empty or visibly styled block when a deliberate break is needed.
<div style="page-break-before: always"> </div>
<table style="page-break-inside: avoid">...</table>
Use a block wrapper for a planned section break rather than assuming CSS can split a specific table row at an exact point. The Gecko engine has a documented limitation: page-break styles cannot be applied within tables to elements such as table rows. If row-level break control is essential, use a layout strategy that does not depend on that behavior, such as block-level sections or programmatic table construction. A rule such as page-break-inside: avoid is also a layout preference, not a substitute for checking how the renderer handled a table that is taller than the available page area.
Troubleshoot blank space and unexpected pagination
Rows move forward and leave a large gap
ABCpdf uses heuristics when deciding where to break content. A 2013 Stack Overflow report described a particular table with many vertical borders that ABCpdf support attributed to cumulative cohesion: the renderer was attempting to keep too much content together. The reported suggestion was to try maximum cohesion:
theDoc.HtmlOptions.BreakMethod = HtmlBreakMethodType.MaximumCohesion;
Treat this as a case-specific troubleshooting experiment, not a universal fix. The report does not establish that borders always cause gaps or that changing the break method will improve every table. Test the setting with your actual ABCpdf release and HTML engine, compare the resulting page breaks, and retain it only if it solves the observed layout without creating a different pagination problem.

<thead>, not merely the first row of<tbody>. - Verify that the selected engine is ABCChrome or ABCGecko, the engines the guide names for repeated headers and footers.
- Render a multi-page test with the production engine and version; a single-page PDF cannot confirm repeat behavior.
The output stops before the final rows
Check the page-chaining loop: the initial render must return an ID, each new page must be made current, and every AddImageToChain result must replace the previous ID before the next Chainable check. Save after the chain ends, not immediately after the first HTML render.

CSS breaks inside a table are ignored
If using Gecko, do not depend on page-break styling on table rows. Move the break instruction to a visible block outside the table or restructure the report so its required break occurs between blocks. If the required layout is fundamentally row-driven, consider the programmatic helper approach instead of fighting an unsupported row-level break.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validate the production PDF
Pagination is a rendered-layout result, so validate the generated file under the conditions that matter to the application rather than relying on markup inspection alone. Keep a representative long-table fixture and check it whenever the renderer configuration or table styling changes.
- Use the same ABCpdf release and HTML engine as deployment, including the exact operating system and available fonts.
- Include realistic row heights, vertical and horizontal borders, nested tables if present, and enough rows to force several page transitions.
- Check that all content appears, headers repeat as intended, totals or footers land correctly, and deliberate breaks occur in visible block content.
- Compare pagination after changing engine, version, font, border rules, or table structure; these factors can affect layout.
There is no material published statistic for table pagination in the cited ABCpdf material: the relevant guidance is API and layout behavior, not a general speed or page-capacity benchmark. Measure render time and output size using your own representative reports if those affect your application’s operating limits.
