The fastest way to create a shareable screenshot link is to upload a redacted image to an online host, copy its URL, and test that URL in a signed-out browser. For repeatable desktop sharing, configure ShareX to upload after capture and copy the returned URL. For controlled access, use a cloud service such as Dropbox and review its view, password, expiration, and removal settings before sending the link.
The five-step workflow
- Capture or select the image. Take the relevant screen area or choose an existing PNG, JPEG, or WebP.
- Redact unnecessary information. Cover passwords, API keys, personal data, private messages, account IDs, and anything the recipient does not need. Inspect the edited image at full size before uploading.
- Choose an online destination. Use an automatic screenshot uploader, managed cloud storage, or a host you control. Your capture application alone does not determine who can open the final URL or how long it remains available.
- Upload and copy the URL. The service should return a web address that you can paste into a support ticket, chat, issue tracker, or document.
- Verify access. Open the link in a private or signed-out browser when practical. Confirm that the intended audience can view it and check the destination’s permissions, expiry, and deletion controls.
Option 1: ShareX automatic upload on Windows
ShareX is a free, open-source Windows utility that captures and edits images, uploads them to a configured destination, and can copy or open the resulting link. It does not provide a universal anonymous host by itself: you must configure a supported destination first.
Configure the destination
- Install ShareX from its official site.
- Open Destination settings and select an image host, or configure your own service using ShareX’s Custom uploader documentation.
- Sign in or enter the destination’s required API key, bucket, endpoint, or other credentials. Confirm where files will be stored and how they can be deleted.
Enable upload and URL copying
In ShareX, open Task settings → After capture tasks and enable Upload image to host. Then open Task settings → After upload tasks and enable Copy URL to clipboard. This is the official sequence described by ShareX: “Configure an image destination, enable Upload image to host under After capture tasks, then enable Copy URL to clipboard under After upload tasks.” ShareX’s guide was published July 10, 2026.
Use the workflow safely
- Capture with ShareX’s region, window, or full-screen shortcut.
- Use the editor to blur, pixelate, or cover sensitive areas. ShareX’s Image Editor documentation covers redaction and annotation.
- Inspect the complete image, then finish the capture.
- ShareX uploads it automatically and places the returned URL on your clipboard. Paste it into the target conversation.
Try the automation first with an image containing no sensitive information. Know the host’s audience, retention, and deletion rules before relying on it for support evidence.

Option 2: Dropbox view-only links
Dropbox can create a view-only link that people without a Dropbox account can open. The controls available to you depend on the plan. Dropbox says customers on Professional, Essentials, Standard, Advanced, Business, Business Plus, and Enterprise can set link passwords and expiration dates; its help page was updated May 28, 2026.
Create and copy a link
- Upload the screenshot to Dropbox and open the file’s Share dialog.
- Choose Copy link and set the link to view-only if that is the available permission.
- If your plan supports them, configure a password and expiration date before copying the final URL.
- Test the link while signed out, then send it.
Link settings apply to people arriving through that link. Someone with separately granted or existing access may retain access regardless of link settings. Therefore, do not describe a Dropbox URL as confidential or permanently inaccessible without checking the account’s current permissions and removing direct access where necessary.
Choosing the right destination

Compare any service on five questions: must the recipient sign in, is the link view-only, are password and expiry controls included on your plan, who can delete the file, and how quickly can you revoke access? A short URL is not automatically a private URL.

Privacy checks before you share
- Remove secrets: credentials, tokens, recovery codes, payment details, QR codes, and internal URLs can be visible even in a small corner.
- Redact instead of cropping when needed: cropping can leave sensitive text in the uploaded original if your editor preserves it; export and inspect the final image.
- Check hidden context: browser tabs, notification previews, chat sidebars, file paths, and timestamps may identify people or systems.
- Use the least access: prefer view-only permissions and an expiry or password when the destination supports them.
- Plan removal: record where the file lives and how to delete it. A recipient who downloaded or separately accessed the image cannot be controlled by later link removal.

Troubleshooting
The link returns 404 or a deleted-file message
The upload may have expired, been removed, or been moved. Recheck the host’s retention and deletion settings, create a new link, and update the original ticket or message.
The recipient is asked to sign in
The file is restricted to account holders or direct invitees. Change the destination to a public or view-only link if appropriate, or invite the recipient’s account. Test again in a private window.
The image shows private information
Remove the existing upload immediately if the host allows it, rotate any exposed credentials, redact the source image, export a new file, and share only the replacement URL.

ShareX uploads nothing
Verify that an image destination is configured, credentials are valid, and both Upload image to host and Copy URL to clipboard are enabled in the correct task sections. Test the destination manually with a non-sensitive image.

Operational and cost notes
For occasional manual sharing, Dropbox or a configured ShareX destination is usually enough. For repetitive website captures, automate naming, destination selection, and access review rather than pasting untested URLs. Keep the original local file only as long as your retention policy requires, and do not assume a cache hit, expiration date, or deleted link removes copies already downloaded by recipients.

FAQ
Can I make a screenshot link without installing software?
Yes. Upload an existing image to a cloud service such as Dropbox, configure its sharing permissions, copy the link, and test it signed out.
Does a shareable link mean anyone can edit the image?
No. A view-only link normally permits viewing, but the exact permissions are controlled by the destination and your plan. Confirm the sharing dialog before sending.
