To preview an HTML email online for free, paste its code into a checker such as Mailtrap’s HTML & CSS Email Checker, or use Litmus to render a preview. Then check the email in the desktop and mobile clients your audience uses, inspect links and images, and send a real test message to representative inboxes. A browser preview is useful, but it cannot guarantee that every recipient’s email app will display the message identically.
What a free HTML email preview can—and cannot—tell you
An online checker helps you catch problems in the HTML and CSS and see a rendered version of your message before sending. Depending on the tool, it may also show previews for different email clients and devices or offer additional pre-send checks.
Those are separate capabilities. A quick HTML/CSS check is not necessarily a Gmail or Outlook preview, and a simulated client preview is not the same as opening a delivered message in a real inbox. Email rendering can also be affected by image blocking, remote asset availability, tracking links, and client-specific behavior. Use a preview as one part of QA rather than as proof that every recipient will see a perfect email.

How to preview an email before sending it
- Prepare the exact email HTML. Use the same markup and content you intend to send. If the email depends on remote images, stylesheets, or tracking links, make sure those URLs are present and accessible as they will be in the campaign.
- Run a checker or render a preview. Paste or upload the HTML if the tool supports it. Mailtrap describes a free HTML/CSS checker; Litmus supports pasted HTML and its Builder workflow. If your markup is local, Litmus says its Chrome Extension can preview local HTML.
- Choose clients and devices based on your audience. Include Gmail, Outlook, and Apple Mail where they matter to your recipients, and inspect both desktop and mobile layouts. A tool’s advertised preview count does not mean every client is equally relevant to your audience.
- Inspect the message rather than just its overall appearance. Check that text wraps cleanly, spacing remains legible, buttons are visible, and important content is not lost when images are blocked. Where available, review links, images, tracking, accessibility, and load-time checks.
- Send a real test email. Deliver the campaign to representative inboxes and open it in the actual apps or webmail interfaces your audience uses. A simulated preview cannot cover every combination of account settings, client version, and production delivery behavior.
- Keep a record of what you checked. Note the tool, plan, and client/device previews used, especially if a future send depends on a plan allowance. Recheck current plan terms and supported clients when the workflow changes.
What to check in Gmail, Outlook, and Apple Mail
Gmail
Use a Gmail preview if Gmail recipients matter, but do not assume one preview represents every Gmail environment. Check the desktop and mobile layouts relevant to your audience, confirm images and links load as intended, and test the delivered message in a real Gmail inbox before launch.
Outlook
Include Outlook in your test set when recipients use it, and check the specific Outlook preview options your tool provides. If the message is important, verify a delivered test in the Outlook application or web experience your audience actually uses rather than relying only on a generic screenshot.
Apple Mail
Check Apple Mail on the devices your readers use when that audience is significant. Inspect mobile readability, image behavior, and tap targets. A desktop rendering alone does not establish how the email behaves on a phone.

These are practical test priorities, not a claim that one vendor’s preview list covers every app version or configuration. Select clients according to your own recipient mix.
Why a screenshot is not the same as email-client testing
A screenshot service can show how a URL or supported HTML/CSS content looks when rendered, but a website screenshot is not automatically an email-client preview. It does not establish how Gmail, Outlook, or Apple Mail will interpret a delivered message. For email QA, use a tool that explicitly offers email rendering or client previews, then check a real test message.

The HTML checker shows errors or an unexpected layout
Check whether the issue is in the markup, the CSS support reported by the checker, or a missing remote asset. Fix the source HTML and run the preview again. A checker result is specific to the tool’s supported checks; it does not certify every email app.

The preview looks right, but the delivered email does not
Send a new test message and inspect it in the actual recipient app. Confirm that the test uses the same content, images, links, and sending setup as the planned campaign. A preview and a delivered message are different checks, so use both for a consequential send.
A tool asks for an account or plan upgrade
Check whether the feature is a free checker, a trial, a limited plan feature, or a subscription-gated client preview. In particular, HubSpot’s documented preview feature is for Marketing Hub Professional and Enterprise, with rolling test limits listed separately for each plan. Verify present terms on the vendor’s product page before choosing a workflow.
Your desired client or device is not listed
Do not infer its behavior from a different preview. Test a delivered message in that client or select a tool whose currently supported preview list includes it. Record the missing coverage so the team understands what was and was not checked.

Remote images or tracking behave differently
Inspect the image and tracking URLs in the rendered preview and in a delivered test. Also check the message with images blocked where practical: essential instructions and calls to action should not depend solely on an image loading. Use the tool’s image, link, and tracking checks when available.
Choosing a free workflow that fits

For a broader rendered preview and pre-send checklist, Litmus describes client previews and checks across links, images, tracking, load time, spam, and accessibility, but confirm the current plan requirements.
