The reliable way to speed up background-heavy wkhtmltopdf jobs is to measure the complete conversion, verify that assets are loading, reduce needlessly large source images, and then test output controls one at a time. There is no documented universal percentage or time saving for any of these changes. A smaller image may help, but the result depends on the page, runtime, fonts, network, JavaScript, and installed wkhtmltopdf build.
What actually makes a background-image PDF slow?
wkhtmltopdf is an open-source command-line program that renders HTML with the Qt WebKit engine and writes PDF output. It runs headlessly, so a desktop display service is not required. A conversion that appears to be “slow because of the background” can instead be waiting for remote assets, JavaScript, fonts, a network timeout, or a large page layout.
Separate the problem into four stages:
- Page readiness: HTML, CSS, fonts, scripts and remote resources become available.
- Image decoding and layout: WebKit loads and paints the background at its CSS size.
- PDF encoding: images are embedded and may be resampled or JPEG-compressed.
- File writing: the resulting PDF is serialized to disk or a pipe.
A useful optimization keeps those stages separate. If the PDF is missing an image, fix inclusion or loading first; a missing background is not evidence of slow rendering.
Establish a repeatable baseline
Run the same input repeatedly before changing an option. Keep the HTML, CSS, image files, fonts, machine or container, wkhtmltopdf binary, command line, and page count constant. Record elapsed time and PDF size for several runs rather than trusting one noisy measurement.

Capture the conditions
- Record the exact installed version and build. The official downloads page identifies 0.12.6 as the stable series and dates that release June 11, 2020.
- Record the operating system or container image, CPU and memory allocation, and whether fontconfig and freetype2 runtime libraries are supplied by the platform.
- Note whether images, CSS, fonts and scripts are local files or fetched over HTTP(S).
- Record image format, pixel dimensions, byte size, CSS background size, number of pages, and any JavaScript delay or readiness mechanism.
Time the command
On a Unix-like system, wrap the conversion with the shell’s timing facility and save both the PDF size and elapsed time. Repeat the same command after each isolated change. On Windows, use a consistent PowerShell timing method and record the same fields. Do not compare a warm-cache local run with a cold-cache remote run.
Verify that backgrounds and images are enabled
The wkhtmltopdf manual documents background printing as enabled by default with --background. Images are also loaded and printed by default with --images. The inverse switches, --no-background and --no-images, disable them.
Use diagnostic contrasts
- Convert with the normal command and confirm that the expected background appears in the PDF.
- Run a diagnostic conversion with
--no-background. If the output changes, the background rule is being considered; this switch is not a speed fix when the artwork is required. - Run a diagnostic conversion with
--no-images. This helps distinguish CSS backgrounds from replaced image elements and reveals whether a different asset is responsible for the delay. - Check the background URL from the same user, container and network namespace that runs wkhtmltopdf. A browser on your workstation may be able to reach an asset that the converter cannot.
Also inspect the generated PDF, not only the command’s exit status. A successful process can still produce a page with a missing or substituted background when an asset failed to load.
Reduce oversized background sources
The most defensible image optimization is to provide a derivative whose dimensions are appropriate for the printed area. A source containing many more pixels than the PDF can display or print has extra decode, memory and embedding work. This is ordinary image preparation, not a documented wkhtmltopdf speed guarantee.
Choose dimensions from the output
- Determine the CSS width and height of the background region and whether it covers one page or repeats across pages.
- Decide whether readers will view the PDF on screen, print it, or do both. Preserve enough resolution for the intended use rather than shrinking until edges or text in the artwork become visibly soft.
- Create a derivative in an appropriate format. Photographic artwork often tolerates JPEG compression; flat graphics, transparency and sharp text may require PNG or another lossless source.
- Keep the original asset for other uses and point the PDF-specific stylesheet at the derivative.
Test the derivative, do not assume its benefit
Hold every other variable constant. Compare conversion time, resulting PDF size, sharpness at the intended viewing or print scale, color and transparency, and whether all pages still load the asset. A smaller source can reduce work, but network latency, JavaScript and font loading may dominate the total.

Test image-DPI and JPEG-quality controls separately
The manual documents --image-dpi <integer> as a control that scales embedded images down to a selected DPI. Its documented default is 600 DPI. This is an output-resolution setting, not a promise that rendering will be faster.
For JPEG compression, the documented default for --image-quality <integer> is 94. The manual also describes --lowquality as a way to generate lower-quality output useful for reducing document space. Treat quality and PDF size as explicit requirements when changing either setting.
Use a one-variable matrix
| Configuration | What to change | What to measure |
|---|---|---|
| Baseline | Documented defaults | Elapsed time, PDF bytes, visual fidelity |
| DPI test | Change only --image-dpi |
Elapsed time, raster sharpness, PDF bytes |
| Quality test | Change only --image-quality |
Elapsed time, JPEG artifacts, PDF bytes |
| Low-quality test | Use --lowquality where acceptable |
Elapsed time, file size, readability and print quality |
Run enough repetitions to see whether a difference is larger than normal process noise. If a setting shrinks the file but does not change elapsed time, that is still a valid file-size result—not evidence of a speedup.
Separate resource loading from PDF generation
Remote backgrounds, web fonts, analytics, third-party widgets and JavaScript can make a conversion look like an image bottleneck. The library settings expose web.background and web.loadImages, plus load-error handling. They also expose a JavaScript delay setting. A delay or a resource that never becomes ready can dominate timing even when the background itself is small.
Make readiness deterministic
- Prefer local, versioned assets for repeatable batch jobs when policy and deployment allow it.
- Use a deliberate JavaScript wait only when the page genuinely needs it; an unnecessarily long delay is pure conversion time.
- Configure load-error behavior so failures are visible rather than silently producing incomplete pages.
- Measure a locally served version and a remote version separately to identify network and TLS effects.
Do not attribute the total duration to background painting until resource readiness and script waiting have been accounted for.

Common failures and fixes
The background is absent
Check that the command has not inherited --no-background, that the CSS URL resolves from the converter’s environment, and that the file is readable by the conversion process. Confirm the image is not hidden by a later rule, an unsupported path, or a page-specific stylesheet. Use --background and a minimal test page to isolate configuration from application CSS.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Images are missing but the command succeeds
Check --no-images, URL encoding, redirects, authentication, certificate access and filesystem permissions. Inspect the output PDF and converter diagnostics. A successful exit code does not prove every external resource loaded.
Changing --image-dpi does not make it faster
That is an expected possible result: the manual documents output scaling, not a render-time improvement. Keep the setting only if its resolution and PDF-size trade-off meet your requirement. Investigate oversized inputs, remote assets and script delays instead of expecting a universal DPI speed setting.
The PDF is smaller but visibly worse
Raise the quality or DPI, use a better-sized source derivative, or avoid --lowquality for artwork that contains fine detail. Evaluate at the actual screen zoom and print size; a thumbnail comparison can hide artifacts.
Results vary between machines
Compare the exact wkhtmltopdf build, operating system or container, fonts, fontconfig/freetype2 libraries, CPU limits, asset locations and page count. Font substitution can change layout and pagination, while different runtime libraries can change rendering behavior.

A practical optimization sequence
- Freeze the command, input, environment and output measurements.
- Verify
--backgroundand--imagesbehavior and confirm the asset appears. - Make remote loading, JavaScript waits and load errors observable.
- Inspect source pixels and bytes; create a PDF-specific derivative when it is clearly oversized.
- Test
--image-dpi,--image-qualityand--lowqualityone at a time. - Choose the configuration using time, PDF size, visual fidelity and reliability together.
- Document the winning command and environment so later changes remain comparable.

If your real goal is a clean image of a web page rather than a wkhtmltopdf PDF, ScreenshotNeo provides a single-request screenshot API. It accepts cookie and consent banners as a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
For a quick WebP capture:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the complete request options. It supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF output, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting and an OpenAPI specification. How to report a credible result
When publishing or debugging an optimization, include the wkhtmltopdf version/build, platform or container, font runtime, image format and dimensions, local or remote asset location, relevant flags, JavaScript wait, output quality, page count, number of repetitions, elapsed-time distribution and PDF sizes. State whether the result concerns speed, file size, visual quality or reliability. Without those conditions, a claimed percentage or seconds saved cannot be generalized.

Is there a guaranteed wkhtmltopdf flag that makes background images render faster?
No. The documented image-DPI and JPEG-quality options control output characteristics; the project documentation does not publish a universal background-rendering speedup.
Should I always use –lowquality for faster PDFs?
No. Test it only when the lower visual quality and any resulting artifacts are acceptable for your screen or print use.
Why can a smaller background image fail to improve total time?
Network waits, JavaScript delays, font loading, layout, PDF encoding or process startup may dominate the conversion, leaving image-size changes below normal timing noise.
