Choose a method based on what you are capturing

Use a phone feature when you need what a person sees in an app or on a device. Use browser automation when your input is a webpage and you want repeatable files or image bytes to process. A very tall image is useful for visual inspection, but it may be awkward to read, share, or print; for those needs, consider whether a PDF or a normal document is more suitable.

How do I take a scrolling screenshot on Android?

Google’s Android Help guidance says scrolling screenshots work on Android 12 and newer on most screens that allow scrolling. The precise availability can vary by device and screen, so do not assume the control will appear everywhere.

1. Open the screen you want to capture and scroll to the starting position.
2. Press Power and Volume down together to take a screenshot.
3. In the screenshot controls, tap Capture more.
4. Use the crop guides to select the additional content you want included.
5. Save the resulting capture using the options shown on your device.

If Capture more does not appear, the current screen may not support the feature, or the device may not meet the Android version requirement. For a webpage that must be captured repeatedly, use browser automation rather than repeating this manual process.

How do I capture a full webpage on iPhone?

Apple’s iPhone guide describes capturing beyond the display by opening the screenshot preview and choosing Full Page; it gives an entire webpage in Safari as an example. It does not establish that every app or content type offers this option.

1. Open the webpage you want in Safari and take a screenshot using the iPhone’s normal button combination.
2. Open the screenshot preview if it appears.
3. Choose Full Page in the preview.
4. Review the capture, crop it if needed, and save it using the available controls.

If you need a capture from an app where Full Page is unavailable, or you need many pages captured consistently, this workflow may not fit. A browser automation script is intended for webpages, not as a universal replacement for a screenshot of any app screen.

How to capture full webpages with Playwright

Playwright’s screenshot API provides a fullPage option in JavaScript and a full_page option in Python. It captures the page’s full scrollable area rather than only the currently visible viewport. The snippets below save a PNG to a path; the API can also return screenshot bytes for post-processing or a visual-diff workflow.

JavaScript: save a full-page screenshot

Install Playwright and its browser before running the script:

The surrounding code opens a browser, visits a target URL, writes the file, and closes the browser even if navigation or capture fails. Replace https://example.com with the page you are authorized to capture.

Python: save a full-page screenshot

Install Playwright and its browser, then save the following as capture.py and run python capture.py:

The Python API’s documented full-page form is page.screenshot(path="screenshot.png", full_page=True). Use your actual destination URL and choose a filename that identifies the page or run when capturing more than one.

Capture image bytes instead of writing a file

When another step should process the image—for example, storing it through your own application or comparing it with another image—omit the path and retain the returned bytes. In JavaScript, the screenshot call can be written as:

image_bytes = page.screenshot(full_page=True)

These byte results can be passed to downstream code rather than saved at the capture step. Choose file output for a straightforward archive; choose bytes when your pipeline already handles image data.

How to take scrolling screenshots at scale

For a recurring capture job, treat each page as an independent unit of work. The full-page option makes each capture request concise, but the rest of the workflow—input validation, naming, error handling, and checking page-specific behavior—is yours to design. Start with a small representative set of pages before expanding a batch.

Build a predictable batch workflow

1. Keep an explicit URL list. Validate or normalize the inputs before opening pages, and record the original URL alongside each result.
2. Give each output a stable identity. Use a safe filename or a directory structure that ties the image to its page and run. Avoid naming every result screenshot.png, which can overwrite earlier captures.
3. Record failures per URL. A navigation or capture error for one page should be logged with that URL and should not silently be treated as a successful image.
4. Check representative output. Inspect captures from pages with different layouts before trusting a large run. Confirm that content at the bottom is present and that no unexpected overlay obscures the page.
5. Review changes over time. If the page is dynamic, compare representative outputs across runs so that a changed layout or loading pattern is not mistaken for a reliable capture.

These are workflow practices, not guarantees that Playwright will capture every site identically. The full-page option addresses the scrollable page area, but it does not by itself prove that content requiring interaction has appeared or that every dynamic element has finished rendering.

Choose output dimensions deliberately

Playwright documents format and quality controls, clipping, and the scale setting. CSS scale produces one output pixel per CSS pixel; device scale produces device pixels and can produce larger high-density captures. Use CSS scale when consistent, smaller images are more useful than extra pixel detail; use device scale when fine detail matters and you can accommodate larger files. The right choice depends on whether the image is for inspection, comparison, or presentation.

Troubleshooting and reliability

The phone’s scrolling option is missing

On Android, check whether the device is running Android 12 or newer and whether the current screen allows scrolling; Google describes support as applying to most such screens, not all of them. On iPhone, Apple’s documented Full Page flow uses the screenshot preview and a Safari webpage example. If Full Page is not offered for the content you are capturing, do not assume an unrelated app supports it.

The saved webpage image looks incomplete

A full-page screenshot captures the page as rendered, not necessarily every piece of content a site might reveal after user interaction or further loading. Inspect a test capture, and if the page’s own behavior requires a user action, determine how that content should be loaded before capture. Treat each site as a case to validate rather than assuming one script proves all pages are complete.

The batch job has missing or overwritten files

Use distinct, stable output names and log the URL associated with each attempt. Keep errors separate from successful captures, and check files from multiple page types before relying on the batch. A missing output can otherwise be hard to distinguish from an input that was never processed.

Images are too large or too hard to use

Review whether the capture needs device-scale pixels or whether CSS scale is sufficient. Device scale can increase image dimensions, while a very tall full-page image can be inconvenient to read or print. Adjust the output scale to the task and use a document-oriented format when pagination matters more than a single continuous image.
