A black Android screenshot usually has one of two causes: the app is intentionally protecting its content, or the phone is failing to capture ordinary screens correctly. Test the home screen first. If it looks normal while one banking, password-manager, streaming, or other sensitive app produces a blank image, the app may be using Android’s FLAG_SECURE protection. If every screen is black, verify the capture method, storage, software state, and device-specific support. If the image contains the scene but is unusually dark, HDR tone mapping may be changing the screenshot’s appearance rather than blocking it.
Start with the fastest diagnostic test
- Open the home screen or a basic Settings page that contains no private information.
- Press Power and Volume Down together.
- Open the resulting image in Google Photos or your phone’s Gallery.
This single comparison separates app-level protection from a device-wide capture problem.

When an app is deliberately blocking screenshots
How FLAG_SECURE works
Android lets an app mark a window as secure. The system then keeps that activity’s content out of screenshots and other non-secure displays. Android’s security guidance names banking apps and password managers as examples of software that may need this protection; when a screenshot is taken, the resulting image can be blank.

There is no universal “allow screenshots” switch
The official Android documentation explains how developers set the secure-window flag, but it does not provide a general consumer setting for overriding another app’s decision. Avoid root hacks or untrusted “screenshot unlocker” utilities: they can expose credentials and still cannot reliably defeat secure windows.
For a legitimate record, look for the app’s own Share, Export, Download statement, receipt, or print function. Availability differs by app. If none exists, ask the publisher’s support team for an approved way to retain the information.
Use Android’s supported capture methods
Hardware buttons
Open the target screen, then press Power and Volume Down at the same time. A preview or animation normally appears. If timing is difficult, press both briefly rather than holding them.

Power-menu Screenshot
On supported phones, hold Power for a few seconds and tap Screenshot. Manufacturers can change the power menu, so this option may be absent or named differently.
Find the saved image
Google’s Android Help says screenshots are available in Google Photos and, depending on the phone, the device’s Gallery app. Check the Screenshots album and confirm that the phone has free storage. A full storage volume can prevent a file from being written even when the shortcut works.
If every screenshot is black
- Retry on a simple screen. Capture Home, Settings, or a static web page. This rules out an app-specific restriction.
- Use the alternate shortcut. Try the Power-menu Screenshot option if the button combination fails.
- Restart the phone. A reboot clears a stuck System UI process and applies pending low-level changes.
- Check storage and permissions. Free space and verify that Photos/Gallery can access media. Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android release.
- Install official updates. Check Settings for system and security updates, then retry after installation.
- Test in Safe mode if overlays are suspected. Third-party screen filters, accessibility overlays, automation tools, or enterprise management software can interfere. Safe-mode entry differs by model; consult the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Document the pattern. Note the model, Android version, affected apps, capture method, and whether a file is created. This information helps support reproduce the fault.
- Contact the manufacturer. Google’s consumer guidance directs users to the phone maker when the standard methods do not work. The exact fix can depend on the model’s System UI and firmware.
When the screenshot is dark, not blank
A screenshot that still shows the scene but looks darker, washed out, or differently colored is a separate symptom from a fully black protected window. Android Open Source Project documentation describes HDR screenshot tone mapping: the display and the saved image can use different brightness and color conversions, including darker screenshot colors on Android 14.

To isolate HDR, capture an ordinary non-HDR Settings page and compare it with the affected video, photo, or game. If only HDR content changes, the capture may be functioning normally while the tone mapping differs. The documentation describes this behavior as a rendering possibility, not a diagnosis for every phone. Keep the phone and app updated, and report reproducible HDR differences to the device maker or app developer with sample files.

Android 14 screenshot detection is not screenshot blocking
Android 14 added a privacy-preserving screenshot detection API. A supported app can register a callback and respond to a supported screenshot event, such as warning the user. The callback does not contain the screenshot image.
The API documentation also limits detection to a specified hardware-button action and excludes some methods, including ADB and instrumentation tests. Detection itself does not blacken an image. Android documents FLAG_SECURE as the mechanism that keeps protected activity content out of screenshots and non-secure displays. Confusing these two APIs can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction.

Capture-path and device checks
- Button capture versus another method: If a manufacturer’s quick-settings tile, gesture, stylus command, or accessibility action behaves differently, record which path produces the black file. Android 14 detection does not cover every path.
- One account or profile: Work profiles and enterprise policies can impose additional restrictions. Ask your administrator before changing management settings.
- External displays: Secure windows are also excluded from non-secure displays, so casting or mirroring may show a blank region by design.
- Content context: A banking label alone does not prove protection is active; the scope test is stronger evidence than the app category.

What to record before asking for help
- Phone manufacturer and exact model
- Android version and security-update level
- Whether Home and Settings screenshots work
- The affected app and screen type
- Hardware-button or alternate capture path
- Whether the file is blank, dark, or missing
- Available storage and any work-profile policy

Why does the screenshot look different from what I saw?
HDR tone mapping can produce darker or differently colored saved images, especially on Android 14, even when capture succeeded.
Does Android 14 screenshot detection let an app read my screenshots?
No. The detection callback reports a supported event but does not provide the screenshot image.
