Choose the capture method based on the output you need: use Google Maps Static API for a map image assembled from request parameters, or use Playwright when you need pixels from a map already rendered in a browser. They are not interchangeable. In particular, producing a file does not grant permission to store, modify, publish, or redistribute Google Maps content. Check the rules for the Google Maps service and use involved before retaining or sharing an image.

Choose between a map image and a browser screenshot

There are two practical meanings of “Google Maps screenshot programmatically.” A Static API request returns a map image based on parameters such as center, zoom, dimensions, map type, markers, and paths. A browser screenshot captures pixels from a page after it has rendered, potentially including the interactive map and surrounding page UI.

Need Better fit What it produces Setup
A repeatable map image defined by location and styling parameters Google Maps Static API An API-generated map image, not a capture of the Maps website interface Google Cloud project, billing account, enabled Static API, and credentials
A capture of a map as it appears in a browser page Playwright browser automation A screenshot of the rendered page or selected element A browser automation runtime, a browser, and a page that can load in that environment

Use the Static API when the desired result is a controlled map image rather than a recreation of the maps.google.com interface. Use Playwright when the rendered browser state matters—for example, a map embedded in an application you operate, or a page whose layout and controls are part of the capture. A screenshot tool can capture pixels, but it cannot decide whether keeping or distributing those pixels is allowed.

Use Google Maps Static API for a parameter-driven image

Google describes Maps Static API as creating map images from HTTP request parameters. The request can specify map properties such as center, zoom, size, map type, markers, and paths. Before using it, configure a Google Cloud project, attach a billing account, enable Maps Static API, and obtain the credentials required by Google’s current setup guidance. Consult the current API documentation for exact request syntax, limits, parameter behavior, and credential handling; those details can change.

Build the request deliberately

  1. Decide what location and visual content the map must show: center, zoom, dimensions, map type, markers, or paths.
  2. Enable Maps Static API in the intended Google Cloud project and configure its billing and credentials.
  3. Construct an HTTP request using the documented parameters and authenticate it using Google’s current guidance. Keep credentials out of public source code and client-visible locations unless Google’s documentation explicitly supports that use.
  4. Inspect the response and display it as the API-provided image where appropriate. Do not assume that receiving image bytes means you may save a reusable copy or serve that copy later.

The Static API avoids automating the interactive Maps site, but it is not a browser screenshot service. It does not capture the browser chrome, site controls, or a particular browser-rendered state. Google Maps Platform’s FAQ says: “You may not store and serve copies of images generated using the Maps Static API from your website.” It further says webpages needing static map images should link the image source directly to the Static API so Google serves the image to end users. Follow the current FAQ and applicable terms for the exact implementation.

Capture a browser-rendered map with Playwright

For a browser screenshot, Playwright’s Page API provides page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' }). The following Node.js example launches Chromium, opens a URL, waits for navigation to finish, and saves a viewport screenshot. Install Playwright and its browser before running it. Use a page URL you are permitted to access and capture; a public Maps page may show consent prompts, localized UI, changing controls, or other environmental differences.

  1. Install the package: npm install playwright.
  2. Install the browser runtime: npx playwright install chromium.
  3. Save this as capture-map.mjs, replace the sample URL with the page you intend to capture, then run node capture-map.mjs.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';

const url = 'https://www.google.com/maps';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });

try {
  const page = await browser.newPage({
    viewport: { width: 1280, height: 900 },
    deviceScaleFactor: 1
  });

  await page.goto(url, {
    waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
    timeout: 60000
  });

  // Allow the page's client-side rendering to proceed. This is a
  // practical delay, not proof that every map tile or control is ready.
  await page.waitForTimeout(5000);

  await page.screenshot({ path: 'google-maps.png' });
  console.log('Saved google-maps.png');
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

The delay is intentionally a simple starting point, not a universal readiness test. A page can reach domcontentloaded before its map has finished drawing, and fixed delays can be either wasteful or too short. For an application you control, prefer waiting for a meaningful selector or application-specific ready state. Avoid relying on undocumented selectors from Google’s public Maps site: its structure and behavior can change.

Choose viewport or full-page capture

The example saves the current viewport. To capture the full scrollable document instead, pass fullPage: true to page.screenshot. That captures the page layout; it does not guarantee that an interactive map will expand into a useful full-page map or that off-screen map content has been loaded. For a map embedded in an application you control, consider locating the map container and taking an element screenshot, for example with await page.locator('#map').screenshot({ path: 'map.png' }). Replace #map with the actual selector in your own page.

Preserve attribution and check usage rights

Google Maps Platform rules differ by service and intended use. Google’s Maps JavaScript API policies require attribution to remain clear, legible, unmodified, and appropriately positioned. They also address pre-fetching, caching, and storage of content in general, with place IDs identified as exempt from that general restriction. Apply the policy for the specific service used rather than assuming one rule covers every Maps product.

  • Static API output: Google’s Maps Platform FAQ says not to store and serve copies of Static API images from your website; it directs sites needing static map images to link the image source directly to the API.
  • Map tiles and satellite imagery: Google says not to access them through mechanisms outside Google Maps Platform, including bulk tile-download scripts.
  • Modification and stitching: Google’s terms restrict some derivative uses, with examples including server-side modification of tiles and stitching multiple static map images into a larger map.
  • Attribution: For Maps JavaScript API content, preserve required attribution so it remains clear, legible, unmodified, and appropriately placed.
  • Geography and terms: The Static API documentation says EEA developers are subject to EEA terms effective July 8, 2025. Confirm the terms and policies currently applicable to your service, geography, and use.

An archived Google Maps Platform terms page marked as the pre-July 2018 agreement says a new core services agreement took effect July 16, 2018. Treat that older page as a reason to consult the current live agreement, not as a substitute for it. If you need to retain, alter, or redistribute map content, verify that the exact action is permitted under the current terms before building it into a workflow.

Make browser captures more reliable

Browser rendering is affected by the operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, and headless mode. A successful screenshot call only establishes that Playwright wrote an image; it does not prove that the intended map finished loading or that the output is pixel-identical across machines.

  • Use a stable viewport: Set width, height, and device scale explicitly so layout changes are easier to diagnose.
  • Wait for the right state: For your own page, wait for a specific element or application signal. For a third-party page, recognize that a fixed delay cannot ensure every map tile is ready.
  • Inspect the output: Check that the map is visible, the location is correct, and any required attribution has not been clipped or obscured.
  • Run in the deployment environment: Test under the same operating system, browser build, headless configuration, and network conditions used in production.
  • Separate capture from permission: Technical success does not settle whether retaining, modifying, or publishing the content is allowed.

The available guidance does not establish a dependable cost or speed comparison between the Static API and browser automation. Choose based on the output and constraints, then evaluate the deployment setup you actually plan to use.

Troubleshoot common capture failures

The screenshot is blank, incomplete, or shows a prompt

The page may have loaded only its initial document, the map may still be rendering, or an interaction or consent prompt may be covering it. Increase or replace the fixed wait with a readiness condition that is meaningful for a page you control. Inspect the screenshot and page state before treating the file as a successful map capture. Public Maps pages can vary with localization and environment, so do not assume one run predicts all runs.

The page times out or does not load in automation

A timeout can reflect network conditions, navigation behavior, or a page that does not reach the chosen load condition. The example uses domcontentloaded rather than waiting for every network request to finish, but subsequent client-side rendering may still be pending. Check the target URL and the browser’s actual page state, and set timeouts appropriate to your environment rather than repeatedly increasing them without diagnosing the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The output differs between machines

Differences can result from browser version, operating system, viewport, hardware, settings, or headless mode. Pin and control the relevant runtime configuration where repeatability matters, then test in the actual deployment environment. Do not promise exact pixel matching unless those factors are controlled and validated.

The map is visible but attribution is missing or clipped

Check the capture bounds and layout, and preserve required Google attribution. For Maps JavaScript API content, Google’s policy requires attribution to remain clear, legible, unmodified, and appropriately positioned. If the screenshot crop removes it, adjust the capture area or do not use that crop for the intended purpose.

A Static API image works but cannot be used as a stored asset

Image generation and reuse rights are different questions. Google’s Maps Platform FAQ says not to store and serve copies of Static API images from a website, and describes linking the image source directly to the API for webpages that need a static map. Rework the delivery flow to follow the current policy rather than treating a successful HTTP response as permission to keep a copy.

A script or image stitching workflow depends on tiles

Do not use bulk tile downloads or assume that combining or modifying map imagery is permitted. Google identifies external tile access and certain derivative uses, including server-side modification of tiles and stitching multiple static map images into a larger map, as restricted examples. Verify the current terms for the exact proposed workflow.

Which approach should you use?

Use the Static API for a parameter-defined map image and browser automation for a rendered-page capture. Use Playwright when you need control over a page’s browser state, and test its rendering in the environment where it will run. In either case, verify the current service-specific attribution, storage, and content-use rules before retaining or publishing the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does taking a screenshot make Google Maps content free to reuse?

No. Capture capability does not determine storage, modification, attribution, or redistribution rights; check the current terms for the specific Maps service and use.

Can I download Google Maps tiles in bulk to assemble a screenshot?

Google says map tiles and satellite imagery must not be accessed through mechanisms outside Google Maps Platform, including bulk tile-download scripts.

Is a Static API image the same as a screenshot of maps.google.com?

No. The Static API returns an image generated from request parameters; browser automation captures a rendered page and its UI.
