There is no single Dompdf setting that fixes every localhost-versus-production size difference. First identify what changed: CSS element dimensions, page layout, image sharpness, page count, or PDF file size in bytes. Then compare the exact Dompdf and wrapper versions, PHP runtime, effective options, page dimensions, HTML/CSS, fonts, and assets in both environments. Do not raise DPI as a generic zoom fix: DPI affects pixel-to-point conversion and background-image resolution, but it cannot repair missing resources or unsupported CSS.
Identify what “size reduction” means
Before changing configuration, compare the PDFs and name the symptom precisely. A smaller logo, a narrower content area, a blurry background, one fewer page, and a smaller PDF file are different problems. Changing DPI may affect some of them, but it is not a universal scale control.
- Elements or text appear smaller: compare pixel-based CSS dimensions, effective DPI, fonts, and the rendered page dimensions.
- The layout collapses, wraps differently, or overflows: compare usable page width, margins, media rules, resources, and whether the CSS features are supported by Dompdf.
- Images look soft or different: inspect the source image dimensions, the CSS frame, background sizing, and image processing separately from layout.
- The PDF has a different page count: compare page size, orientation, margins, fonts, content, and page-break behavior.
- The PDF file is a different size in bytes: compare embedded assets and output independently of visual dimensions.
Save the localhost and production PDFs from the same input, then compare page dimensions, page count, text placement, image appearance, and file size as separate measurements. A difference in one does not establish a difference in the others.
Build a reproducible comparison
Use the same inputs and a fresh renderer
Render the same HTML string with the same CSS, font files, and images in both environments. Record the exact Dompdf version, framework wrapper version, PHP version, and relevant PHP extensions. The project README identifies DOM and MBString among runtime requirements, and GD for image processing. Differences in runtime or extensions are worth checking before changing layout rules.

Create a fresh Dompdf instance for each document. The project README cautions that reusing one instance to render multiple HTML documents can carry parsing and rendering artifacts into later renders.
Record effective configuration, not just checked-in settings
Inspect the options actually passed to Dompdf at render time. A wrapper, environment-specific configuration, or application code may override a configuration file. Compare dpi, defaultPaperSize, defaultPaperOrientation, defaultMediaType, font settings, and any CSS @page rules.
Defaults depend on the installed release and wrapper. The current core options source documents 96 DPI, Letter paper, portrait orientation, and screen media; the current Laravel wrapper configuration shows A4 and DPI 96. These are examples of differing defaults, not universal promises for every installed version. Check the release tag or installed package, then log the effective values on both hosts.
Check DPI and page geometry
Dompdf’s documented core default is 96 DPI. CSS pixel dimensions are translated to PDF points, so different effective DPI values can change the physical size of pixel-defined elements. Point-defined font sizes and other CSS units may behave differently. DPI also influences background-image resolution; changing it can therefore affect sharpness without fixing a layout problem.
Page dimensions and margins constrain the layout independently. A Dompdf maintainer’s June 2024 A4/Bootstrap example gives a page width of 595.28 PDF points, equivalent to 793.71 pixels at 96 DPI. A browser layout designed around a 768-pixel viewport can exceed an A4 page’s usable width once margins are included. This illustrates a page-context mismatch; it does not by itself identify the cause of your production difference.

- Compare the paper size and orientation passed to
setPaperor the wrapper. - Compare CSS
@pagedimensions and margins with the configured paper dimensions. - Check the actual content width available after margins, rather than assuming the browser viewport applies to the PDF.
- If evidence points to DPI, change only DPI for a test render and compare pixel-defined element dimensions and image quality independently.
Do not use a DPI change to compensate for a wrong paper size, excessive margins, or a layout designed for a wider browser viewport.
Verify fonts, stylesheets, and images on production
A resource visible in a browser is not necessarily available to Dompdf. Local filesystem paths must be readable and fall within the configured chroot. Remote HTTP(S) resources require remote access to be enabled, a supported PHP transport configuration, and any allowed-host restriction to include the resource host. Production may therefore omit a font, stylesheet, or image that resolves locally.
- For every resource, record the exact path or URL Dompdf receives.
- For local files, verify readability by the PHP worker and confirm the path is inside the configured
chroot. - For remote files, verify remote access is enabled and PHP has cURL or
allow_url_fopen; check that allowed-host rules match the hostname. - Confirm the deployed files are the same versions as the local files, including font files and generated font metadata.
Keep chroot scoped to the application’s intended resource area. Dompdf’s options documentation warns that allowing the filesystem root can expose unrelated server files; broadening it is not a safe shortcut for resolving a missing asset.
Check writable paths and stale font metadata
The PHP worker must be able to read the font files and write to the configured temporary and font/cache locations. Compare these paths and permissions between environments. A production-only font substitution can alter glyph widths and line wrapping, which then changes page layout or page count.
A Dompdf maintainer discussion from 2025 describes a specific deployment problem: generated installed-fonts.json metadata persisted a path from a local machine. If the evidence points to stale generated metadata, the maintainer says the generated file may be removed so it can be rebuilt. Do not remove the distributed .dist file, and do not treat deleting font metadata as a routine reset without first checking the paths and permissions.

Check whether the CSS is supported
Matching inputs and options do not guarantee that a browser and Dompdf will lay out a page identically. Dompdf documents that Flexbox and CSS Grid are unsupported, among other limitations; it also notes that table cells are not pageable. A browser preview is therefore not proof that the same layout will render correctly in a PDF.
Recommended Free Tools
Reduce the failing document to a small HTML/CSS example and replace unsupported layout behavior with PDF-specific rules or simpler supported layout techniques. Set explicit widths suitable for the page, use print-oriented CSS where appropriate, and test page breaks. Do not use DPI to disguise a layout-engine compatibility issue.
Separate image sharpness from PDF file size
When a background looks blurry
Check the image’s source pixel dimensions against the size of the frame in the PDF. Dompdf resizes CSS background images to their frame; with background-size: cover, a source smaller than that frame may be enlarged. A higher DPI can affect background-image resolution, but it cannot add detail that is absent from the source image. Confirm that the same asset resolves on both hosts before changing DPI.
When the PDF’s byte size changes
Measure file size in bytes separately from the apparent scale of the page. A 2017 issue reports one case in which a PNG background substantially increased PDF size; the discussion attributes the behavior to Dompdf processing PNGs for supported features and says a JPG was inserted without additional processing in that case. This is historical, case-specific evidence, not a rule for all images or current releases. Compare the actual embedded assets and output from the installed Dompdf version before converting formats.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel-sized elements differ in physical size | Effective DPI or CSS units | Log the runtime DPI in both environments; test a DPI-only change and compare dimensions. |
| Content wraps or overflows on A4 | Paper width, margins, viewport assumptions, or unsupported layout CSS | Compare usable width and simplify the layout for the PDF page. |
| Font changes or line wrapping differs | Missing font, stale font metadata, or unreadable font/cache path | Verify the font path and PHP worker access; investigate generated metadata only if it points to a stale path. |
| Image or stylesheet is missing in production | Filesystem chroot, remote-access settings, transport support, or host restrictions |
Verify the exact resource location and the applicable local or remote access rules. |
| Background looks soft while text size is correct | Source image resolution, frame size, or background scaling | Compare source pixels with the rendered frame; assess DPI separately. |
| Visual appearance matches but PDF byte size differs | Embedded asset processing or other output differences | Compare assets and generated files; treat the old PNG report as a clue for investigation, not a general conclusion. |
| Later documents render differently in one process | Reused Dompdf instance | Use a fresh instance for each HTML document. |

Run a controlled fix, not a collection of guesses
- Capture the same HTML and assets with a fresh Dompdf instance on both hosts.
- Record package versions, PHP runtime and extensions, effective options, page setup, and resource paths.
- Fix any resource, font, permission, or paper-geometry mismatch you find.
- If the inputs and configuration match, reduce the document and test CSS support and page-specific layout.
- Change one setting at a time, render again, and compare the symptom that originally differed.
This sequence narrows the cause without conflating layout dimensions, image resolution, page count, and PDF byte size. Because no versions, application code, sample assets, or PDFs are specified here, a single production change cannot be named as the fix for every case.
