In headless Chrome, select the <div> and read innerText for rendered, user-visible text or textContent for the text stored in its DOM descendants. With Playwright, use a locator; with Puppeteer, evaluate the selected element in the page context. If the div is in an iframe, select it through that frame.
Choose the text you actually need
A browser element can expose text in two useful ways. They are not interchangeable, so decide whether your task is to collect what a visitor sees or to inspect the DOM before writing the extraction code.
| Property | Best for | What it returns |
|---|---|---|
innerText |
Text intended to represent rendered, user-visible content | Layout-aware text, including rendered line-break behavior and visibility effects |
textContent |
Reading text stored in the element’s descendants | DOM text without the same layout-aware formatting; it may include hidden descendants |
For example, if a div contains a heading, a paragraph, and a visually hidden helper message, textContent may include all their text. innerText is generally the better fit when the output should resemble the rendered copy. Neither property cleans up, interprets, or validates the text for you; trim or normalize the result only if your application needs that.

Playwright’s locator methods are the straightforward choice for a single element. The following ES module example launches headless Chromium, navigates to a page, reads both forms of text from #target, and closes the browser even if navigation or extraction fails.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
const div = page.locator('#target');
const visibleText = await div.innerText();
const rawText = await div.textContent();
console.log({ visibleText, rawText });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Save it as extract.mjs and run npm install playwright, then node extract.mjs. The selector must match the target page: replace #target with its ID, a suitable data attribute such as [data-testid="article"], or another specific CSS selector. Playwright’s Locator reference documents locator.innerText(), locator.textContent(), and the multi-match helpers.
Why use a locator?
A locator describes how to find an element and performs the read through a focused API. For one intended div, make the selector specific enough that it identifies that div rather than a broad group. Locator reads wait for the target element to be available according to Playwright’s locator behavior, but that does not guarantee that a site’s asynchronous content has finished loading. If the content is populated after the element first appears, wait for a meaningful page condition before reading it.
When there may be several matching divs
If you intentionally want every match, use allInnerTexts() or allTextContents() rather than repeatedly querying a generic selector and accidentally treating the first result as the only one.
const cards = page.locator('.card');
const visibleTexts = await cards.allInnerTexts();
const rawTexts = await cards.allTextContents();
console.log({ visibleTexts, rawTexts });
These return arrays in match order. Use a selector scoped to the relevant section when a page has multiple groups of similar cards.

Handle optional content
If a matching element is required for the task, a failed locator read should normally be treated as an extraction failure rather than silently converted to an empty string. If it is optional, check whether it exists before reading it and represent “not present” separately from “present but empty.” That distinction helps downstream code avoid mistaking a selector problem for valid blank content.
Extract text with Puppeteer
Puppeteer can read the same element properties by evaluating a function against a selected element in the page. This runnable ES module example uses $eval, which expects one matching element.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
const visibleText = await page.$eval('#target', el => el.innerText);
const rawText = await page.$eval('#target', el => el.textContent);
console.log({ visibleText, rawText });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Save as extract.mjs, install with npm install puppeteer, and run node extract.mjs. Puppeteer’s getting-started guide demonstrates locating an element and evaluating el.textContent; Puppeteer’s official site states that it runs headless by default. The explicit headless: true makes the example’s intent clear.
$eval is appropriate when the selector should identify exactly one element. If it matches none, Puppeteer cannot evaluate the callback on a target and the operation fails. If multiple matches are expected, use $$eval to evaluate over the matched elements:

const texts = await page.$$eval('.card', cards =>
cards.map(card => card.innerText)
);
console.log(texts);
As with Playwright, use a selector that reflects the intended scope instead of relying on a generic div selector.
Read a div inside an iframe
An iframe has its own document. A selector applied to the outer page does not automatically search inside that document; target the frame and then locate the div within it.
Playwright frame locator
const frame = page.frameLocator('iframe');
const frameText = await frame.locator('#target').innerText();
console.log(frameText);
Replace iframe with a selector that identifies the intended frame, such as iframe[name="content"] if that is how the page marks it. If there are several frames, a more specific selector prevents reading from the wrong one. Playwright also documents innerText(selector) and textContent(selector) on its Frame API.
Puppeteer frame selection
In Puppeteer, obtain the relevant frame and query within its execution context. For a frame identified by its URL, for example:

const frame = page.frames().find(frame =>

);
if (!frame) {
throw new Error('Embedded content frame was not found');
}
const frameText = await frame.$eval('#target', el => el.innerText);
console.log(frameText);
Use a frame-identification condition that is stable for the page you are automating; the URL fragment here is an example, not a universal identifier. If the iframe is created later, wait for it to be available before searching the frame list. A frame may also navigate after it appears, so select the intended frame after the relevant navigation rather than assuming its first document is final.
Wait for the right content, not just the div
Finding a div and extracting its text are separate from ensuring that the page has finished rendering the content you care about. A site may insert the div before it fills it, update it after an API response, or replace its contents after a user interaction. A successful read can therefore return an empty or partial string even though the selector is correct.
- Wait for a meaningful selector or state that signals the content is ready, rather than adding an arbitrary long delay by default.
- If a site requires interaction, perform the relevant action before reading the text.
- If content is lazy-loaded, make sure the element has been brought into the state where the site populates it.
- When taking repeated readings, decide whether you need the first available text or a stable final value; those are different requirements.
The cited framework references document the locator, selector, and frame APIs. They do not establish a universal wait duration or a timing benchmark: page behavior varies, so choose a readiness condition specific to the site.

If your goal is a screenshot or PDF rather than extracting DOM text, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It does not return a div’s text as a DOM value, so use Playwright or Puppeteer above when your program needs that text. For a screenshot, one GET request can capture a page; the API also returns response headers that identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

Troubleshooting extraction failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Selector read fails because no element matched | The selector is wrong, the element has not appeared, or it is in another frame | Inspect the selector on the loaded page, wait for the target condition, or query through the correct frame. |
| Text is empty | The element exists but is not populated yet, or it contains no text nodes | Wait for a site-specific ready state; check the chosen selector and compare the two text properties. |
| Output contains text not visible on the page | textContent includes descendant text irrespective of visual rendering |
Use innerText if rendered visibility is the relevant criterion. |
| Line breaks or spacing differ from expectation | The property choice and rendered layout produce different text formatting | Choose innerText for rendered line-break behavior or textContent for DOM text, then normalize only if the consumer requires a particular format. |
| Only one result appears when several divs are expected | A single-element API or overly broad selector was used | Use the framework’s multiple-match API and scope the selector to the intended group. |
| Iframe selector cannot find the target | The query runs against the top-level document rather than the iframe document | Identify the iframe, then select the div through a Playwright frame locator or Puppeteer frame. |
Performance, reliability, and output handling
For one small element, extracting a single property is usually simpler than returning the full page HTML and parsing it yourself. For many targets, select and map the matching elements in one page-context operation where practical, as in the multi-match examples, rather than making a separate browser round trip for every node. No official performance benchmark specific to extracting div text is established by the cited documentation, so actual runtime depends on page load, selector behavior, and the amount of content.

Always close the browser when the job finishes; the try/finally examples do so even when an operation throws. Treat scraped text as page content, not trusted input: sites can change markup or return unexpected material, so validate the selector and the shape of the result before using it in later processing. For optional content, distinguish a missing element from an empty string, and keep enough context in logs to identify which URL and selector produced a failure.
Which approach should you use?
- Choose Playwright when locator-oriented selection, its built-in multi-match text helpers, or frame locators fit your script.
- Choose Puppeteer when you want to select an element and evaluate a callback against it in the page context.
- Use
innerTextwhen the desired result follows rendered text behavior; usetextContentwhen the DOM descendant text is the intended data. - For iframe content, switch query context to the relevant frame in either framework.
These methods extract text from the live page DOM. A screenshot API can be useful for visual capture, but an image of a page is not a substitute for a DOM text value when downstream code needs searchable or structured text.
