There is no universally best through-hole pushbutton. For ordinary PCB input, start with the Omron B3F-5000 family: its 12 × 12 mm through-hole format, 130 gf force, 0.30 mm travel and published 10-million-cycle mechanical life make it a strong general-purpose choice. Use the compact B3F-1152 when board space and cost dominate, a sealed C&K EP variant when cleaning or contamination is a concern, and the C&K PHB EE option when you need push-push latching. These are datasheet-based recommendations, not independent laboratory tests.
What “through-hole pushbutton” means
In this article, through-hole means the switch’s solder terminals pass through drilled PCB holes. That primarily describes PCB tactile and miniature pushbuttons. A panel-mount pushbutton is different: it fits a chassis hole and may terminate in solder lugs, quick-connect tabs, screw terminals or wires rather than mounting directly to the board.
- Tactile switch: Usually a small, momentary SPST-NO input device for logic, reset and menu controls.
- Miniature pushbutton: A larger actuator or housing, sometimes with more poles, higher contact ratings or latching action.
- Illuminated pushbutton: Adds an LED or lamp with separate voltage, current and polarity requirements.
- Industrial or emergency-stop button: A specialized panel control; it is not a substitute for a tiny PCB tactile switch.

Best overall PCB tactile option: Omron B3F-5000
The B3F-5000 family is the best starting point for a frequently pressed embedded control, instrument button or test-equipment input. Its 12 × 12 mm body is easier to locate and press than a 6 × 6 mm switch, while the published 10-million-cycle figure exceeds the 300,000-cycle rating of the B3F-1152.

The 10-million-cycle number is a mechanical rating for the specific listed model. It does not mean the contacts can interrupt a rated electrical load for 10 million operations.
Best compact economical option: Omron B3F-1152
Choose the B3F-1152 when a 6 × 6 mm footprint matters more than maximum endurance. It is a through-hole SPST-NO momentary switch with 150 gf force, 0.25 mm travel and a published 300,000-cycle mechanical life. A cap can make its small actuator easier to use, but verify cap height against the enclosure.

Its 0.05 A at 24 VDC rating makes it appropriate for logic inputs and other low-power signals. It is not a direct power switch, and it is not sealed like the C&K EP series.
Best sealed PCB option: C&K EP
The EP family is the better choice when boards are soldered and cleaned, or when dust and moderate moisture could reach an open tactile switch. C&K describes through-hole variants with epoxy-sealed terminals and IP57 versions; the rating applies to the specified configuration and installation, not to every EP suffix.

Best push-push or maintained PCB function: C&K PHB
Use a purpose-built latching mechanism rather than trying to make a momentary tactile switch stay engaged. The PHB datasheet identifies the EE option as push-push and also lists momentary versions, two- and four-changeover configurations, and straight or kinked terminations.

Check the PHB hole pattern and body dimensions before committing a PCB footprint; it is mechanically larger and travels farther than a B3F tactile switch.
Best illuminated alternative: E-Switch 5500
The surfaced 5500STDBODY2 example is a through-hole, momentary SPDT keyswitch with a green LED. Its listing shows a 12 mA current rating and a 2.2 V nominal LED voltage, so it should be treated as a low-current control rather than a power switch.

The LED needs its own polarity and current design—often a current-limiting resistor or regulated driver. Confirm the complete suffix for LED color, contact rating, cap and voltage. The cited distributor listing showed constrained supply and no backorders, so qualify availability before designing it into production.

For outdoor equipment, gloved operation, heavy side loads or a control panel, use a panel product instead of a tiny PCB tactile switch. Omron A22/A22N products offer panel controls with IP65 or IP66-class protection depending on series and configuration, industrial certifications and momentary or latching variants. C&K NP and PNP industrial switches are IP68-rated, offer operating ranges down to -40°C and publish one-million-cycle life figures. They are panel products with their own mounting and terminal requirements, not drop-in PCB replacements; consult the NP datasheet and PNP datasheet.
How to choose the exact part number
- Confirm mounting: top-actuated or right-angle, through-hole diameter, pin spacing and pin count.
- Check mechanical envelope: body outline, actuator height, cap compatibility, enclosure clearance and whether the PCB or panel carries pressing force.
- Select action: momentary, alternate-action or push-push. Never infer latching from a distributor’s generic “pushbutton” label.
- Select contacts: SPST-NO, SPST-NC, SPDT, DPST or DPDT. Treat grounding pins as intentional electrical connections.
- Match the load: verify voltage, current, AC or DC, resistive or inductive load, and minimum signal level.
- Specify environment: temperature, dust, condensation, wash chemistry, solder process and required IP level.
- Check life correctly: distinguish mechanical operations from electrical life at your actual load.
- Review supply: confirm manufacturer identity, suffix, packaging, authorized sources, stock, lead time and a qualified second source.
Electrical design, bounce and debounce
For a basic SPST-NO button, connect one terminal to ground and the other to a digital input with a pull-up resistor, or reverse the arrangement with a pull-down. Read the input as active when the contacts close. Keep the switch on the signal side of the circuit; use a MOSFET, transistor, relay, load switch or contactor for motors, heaters, solenoids and other substantial loads.
Mechanical contacts can produce several rapid transitions. Start with approximately 5–20 ms of firmware debounce for a human-operated control, then verify timing against the actual switch and firmware. An RC filter, Schmitt-trigger input or debounce IC can provide hardware filtering. Avoid a blocking delay when the input is safety-critical. The PHB datasheet lists bounce at 10 ms or less; NP/PNP listings specify less than 5 ms for those configurations.

Installation and reliability practices
- Press along the actuator axis. Side loading, angled pressing or an oversized cap can damage the mechanism and solder joints.
- Provide enclosure support when users press hard; through-hole pins alone do not make a board indestructible.
- Keep the actuator and cap clear of the enclosure at full travel and overtravel.
- Inspect solder fillets and PCB flex, especially on large buttons or unsupported boards.
- Do not stress the actuator while solder joints are hot, and follow the exact datasheet’s temperature and dwell limits.
- Use a sealed/washable model only when the manufacturer explicitly supports the cleaning process.
- For a suspected failure, inspect joints, test continuity while pressing straight down, disconnect the load, verify debounce and confirm the actual voltage and current.
