An ExpertPDF WebKit navigation timeout usually means the page did not reach the converter’s navigation completion condition within the configured limit. In the documented HtmlToPdfArea API, the limit is controlled by NavigationTimeout, measured in seconds, with a default of 60. Set a longer value only after confirming that the page is genuinely slow; use RenderOnTimeout when producing a partial render is preferable to failing the conversion, and use ConversionDelay for content that loads after navigation has already completed.
First, identify which timeout you have
Do not change settings until you have the complete exception text and conversion context. Record the target URL, ExpertPDF package and assembly version, rendering engine, operating system, and whether the same URL works with a simpler page or another engine. A generic WebKit or WebDriver message is not automatically an ExpertPDF-specific error.
- Navigation timeout: the browser has not completed navigation before
NavigationTimeoutexpires. - Late-content problem: navigation succeeds, but AJAX data, images, fonts, or other asynchronous work is still incomplete when the PDF is produced.
- Script or event hang: a readiness event never fires, a promise remains unresolved, or an exception is swallowed and leaves the page waiting indefinitely.
These cases need different fixes. Raising every timer can hide a broken page and increase resource consumption.
Use the documented ExpertPDF controls
Increase NavigationTimeout for genuinely slow navigation
The ExpertPDF reference documents NavigationTimeout in seconds and gives it a default of 60 seconds. Increase it when measurements show that DNS, server response, redirects, authentication, or initial resource loading legitimately takes longer. Choose a bounded value appropriate to your workload rather than an arbitrarily large number.

Check the API reference that matches your installed build before compiling. Property names and syntax can differ between editions, versions, or language bindings. The cited RenderOnTimeout reference is associated with assembly version 21.1.0; that does not establish identical behavior for every release.
Set RenderOnTimeout only when partial output is acceptable
RenderOnTimeout determines whether ExpertPDF renders despite a navigation timeout. Its documented default is false, and the property is WebKit-only. Enabling it changes a timeout failure into an attempted render. The resulting file may reflect the page state reached before all navigation and asynchronous work finished, so inspect output whenever completeness matters.
Use ConversionDelay for post-navigation asynchronous work
ConversionDelay is documented as additional waiting time, in seconds, for asynchronous items. It is separate from navigation timeout and is not a replacement for NavigationTimeout. If the document shell loads but charts, API data, or lazy elements appear late, investigate this delay together with the page’s own readiness logic.

A safe troubleshooting procedure
- Reproduce with a minimal URL. Convert a static page on the same host. If it succeeds, compare redirects, authentication, JavaScript, third-party resources, and page size with the failing URL.
- Measure the navigation path. Check DNS time, TLS negotiation, server time to first byte, redirect chains, and response status outside ExpertPDF. A slow origin or unreachable dependency should be fixed at the source rather than masked by a very long timeout.
- Confirm the engine. Verify that the conversion is actually using WebKit before changing
RenderOnTimeout; that property is documented as WebKit-only. - Set a bounded navigation limit. Raise
NavigationTimeoutin seconds when the measured path warrants it. Change one variable at a time and log the value used for each job. - Decide your completeness requirement. For invoices, legal documents, and archived pages, fail when required content is absent. For a best-effort preview, consider
RenderOnTimeoutand label the result as potentially partial in your application. - Handle late content separately. If navigation finishes but data is absent, tune
ConversionDelay, wait for a reliable selector or application-ready signal, and remove scripts that never settle. - Capture browser diagnostics. ExpertPDF documents
ConsoleLog, which returns the console log of the browser used to render the page. Save it with the failed job, along with request and response information available in your environment. - Retest under production conditions. Repeat with the same proxy, credentials, DNS, certificates, container limits, and concurrency as the failing service. A local success does not prove that the production network can load every dependency.
Why WebKit pages hang instead of finishing
Events that never fire
WebKit’s Inspector guidance for asynchronous tests calls out expected events that never fire as a timeout cause. A page may wait for a custom load, application event, or framework callback that is skipped on an error path. Add explicit logging around the event registration and handler, and provide a failure path that rejects or resolves instead of waiting forever.

A fetch, timer, or worker can leave a promise pending indefinitely. Check every asynchronous branch, including error and cancellation paths. Set application-level deadlines for calls to APIs that the converter cannot reach, and render a deterministic fallback when data is unavailable.
Swallowed exceptions
A try/catch that records nothing can make a script appear to be loading while its readiness flag is never set. Surface exceptions in the browser console and in your page’s status element. Then inspect ExpertPDF’s ConsoleLog output after a failed conversion.

External resources and access controls
Redirect loops, HTTP authentication, expired cookies, blocked third-party domains, certificate problems, and resources restricted to a private network can all prevent a page from reaching its expected state. Test the exact URL and credentials from the converter host, not only from a developer workstation.
Logging and WebKit diagnostics
The WebKit debugging guide recommends enabling debug and protocol logging to inspect browser activity. Treat that as general WebKit advice: the exact switches and log destinations depend on the ExpertPDF edition, host process, and deployment. Enable only the mechanisms supported by your installed package, and protect logs because URLs, headers, cookies, and document data may be sensitive.

Common symptoms, causes, and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix to try |
|---|---|---|
| Fails at almost exactly 60 seconds | Default navigation limit reached | Measure the navigation path, then raise NavigationTimeout in seconds if the delay is legitimate. |
| Raising the timeout never helps | Unresolved script, missing event, or swallowed exception | Inspect console/protocol logs and page readiness code; repair the hanging branch. |
| PDF is created but charts or API data are missing | Navigation completed before asynchronous items | Use an appropriate ConversionDelay and a deterministic readiness condition. |
| Output appears only with a special setting | Navigation timed out before rendering | RenderOnTimeout may permit a best-effort WebKit render; verify that required content is present. |
| Works locally, fails in a service | Different DNS, proxy, certificate, credentials, sandbox, or outbound access | Run network and certificate checks from the service host and compare environment variables. |
| A WebDriver article says 300 seconds or uses milliseconds | Different subsystem and units | Do not apply that historical WebDriver default to ExpertPDF. ExpertPDF’s documented setting is 60 seconds by default and measured in seconds. |
Performance, reliability, and cost trade-offs
Longer timeouts consume capacity
A conversion that waits several minutes occupies a worker, browser process, memory, and network connection for that entire period. Under concurrency, a few hung pages can exhaust a conversion pool. Prefer a measured limit, cancellation, and a retry policy that distinguishes transient network failures from deterministic page bugs.

- Merge several PDF documents into one document
- Edit text and images directly in the document
- NEW in version 2: 4K and 8K resolution
Retries need safeguards
Retry only errors that are likely transient, such as a short-lived upstream failure. Use a maximum attempt count and backoff. Retrying a page with an unresolved promise simply multiplies the work. Record whether each attempt timed out during navigation or after navigation so operators can target the right fix.
Validate output, not just process status
When partial rendering is enabled, a successful file write does not prove that required content exists. Check for expected text, page count, images, or a page-level completion marker before releasing the document.

Before capture it accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
