Don’t try to click the browser’s native Save dialog with Selenium. Set the browser to download automatically to a dedicated directory before creating the driver, click the export control in the page, and wait for the expected .xls or .xlsx file to finish writing before quitting the browser. ChromeDriver does not wait for a download to complete on its own.

Why Selenium can’t click the Save dialog

Selenium locates and interacts with elements in a web page. A browser’s native file-save dialog is not part of that page’s DOM, so it has no HTML locator for findElement() to use. The reliable approach is to configure the browser to save the file without prompting, then verify the result in the filesystem.

There are three separate events to account for: the export button becomes clickable, the application starts a download, and the browser finishes writing the file. A successful click only establishes the first part of that sequence. Page-load completion is not proof that a JavaScript-driven export or file write has finished.

Configure Chrome to download without prompting

Set Chrome’s download preferences in ChromeOptions before constructing ChromeDriver. Use an absolute, unique directory for each test or test run; this keeps one run’s files from being mistaken for another’s.

import org.openqa.selenium.By;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebElement;
import org.openqa.selenium.chrome.ChromeDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.chrome.ChromeOptions;
import org.openqa.selenium.support.ui.ExpectedConditions;
import org.openqa.selenium.support.ui.WebDriverWait;

import java.io.IOException;
import java.nio.file.Files;
import java.nio.file.Path;
import java.time.Duration;
import java.util.HashMap;
import java.util.Locale;
import java.util.Map;
import java.util.stream.Stream;

Path downloadDir = Files.createTempDirectory("selenium-download-");
Map<String, Object> prefs = new HashMap<>();
prefs.put("download.default_directory", downloadDir.toAbsolutePath().toString());
prefs.put("download.prompt_for_download", false);
prefs.put("download.directory_upgrade", true);

ChromeOptions options = new ChromeOptions();
options.setExperimentalOption("prefs", prefs);
WebDriver driver = new ChromeDriver(options);

The directory is created before the browser starts, and the full absolute path is passed as the default download location. ChromeDriver’s guidance warns that the browser can be terminated before a download finishes if the test calls quit() too soon.

Click the page control and wait for the Excel file

Wait for the export control to be clickable, click it, and then poll the download directory with a bounded wait. The following uses the selector from the example page; replace it with a selector that identifies your application’s export button or link.

WebDriverWait wait = new WebDriverWait(driver, Duration.ofSeconds(60));
WebElement export = wait.until(
    ExpectedConditions.elementToBeClickable(
        By.cssSelector("button.export, a.export")
    )
);
export.click();

Path completed = wait.until(d -> {
    try (Stream<Path> files = Files.list(downloadDir)) {
        return files.filter(p -> {
            String n = p.getFileName().toString().toLowerCase(Locale.ROOT);
            return (n.endsWith(".xls") || n.endsWith(".xlsx"))
                    && !n.endsWith(".crdownload")
                    && !n.endsWith(".part");
        }).findFirst().orElse(null);
    } catch (IOException e) {
        return null;
    }
});

The wait returns the first file whose name ends in an Excel extension and not in either of the temporary suffixes checked above. If your application uses a predictable filename, tighten the filter to that exact name. Otherwise, an unrelated Excel file left in the directory could satisfy the condition.

Make completion checks stronger

A finished-looking filename is useful evidence, but for a test that depends on the workbook’s contents, verify both that the file has stopped changing and that it contains what the test expects.

  1. Start with a clean directory. Use a new directory per test, or remove stale files before clicking export. Do not let a previous run’s workbook satisfy the current run’s check.
  2. Wait for a non-temporary Excel filename. Ignore browser temporary download files while the transfer is in progress.
  3. Check size stability. Record the candidate file’s size, wait briefly within a bounded polling condition, and require the size to remain unchanged before proceeding. Keep the overall wait bounded so a stalled export fails rather than waiting forever.
  4. Validate the workbook when the test requires it. Open it with the workbook parser chosen by your test project and assert a known sheet or cell. File existence alone does not establish that the export contains the expected data.

Selenium’s waiting guidance describes asynchronous page changes as a source of race conditions: a click returning is not evidence that a download has completed. A fixed Thread.sleep(2000) is not a completion check; export time varies with the server and the network.

Keep the browser alive until the download is done

Do not call driver.quit() immediately after clicking export. ChromeDriver does not automatically wait for the download, and ending the browser too early can leave the file incomplete. Place cleanup after the download wait and any file assertions, typically in a finally block so the browser is still closed if the test fails.

WebDriver driver = new ChromeDriver(options);
try {
    // Navigate to the page and authenticate as needed.
    // Wait for and click the export control.
    // Wait for the file and validate it.
} finally {
    driver.quit();
}

The outline intentionally leaves navigation and authentication to the application under test; those are not universal. The key lifecycle rule is that the browser must remain open through the file-completion check.

Firefox: set its own download and MIME preferences

Firefox normally does not ask what to do for every file, but it can prompt when the browser is configured to ask whether to open or save files, or when the content type has no defined handling. Set Firefox’s download directory and MIME handling for the actual Excel content type returned by your server. Chrome preference names are not interchangeable with Firefox preferences.

If Firefox still opens a prompt or handles the file differently than expected, check the export response’s content type and content-disposition behavior as well as the browser’s configured handling. The server response and browser settings together determine whether the file is downloaded as intended.

RemoteWebDriver and Selenium Grid downloads

With a remote browser, the configured download directory belongs to the machine running the browser, not necessarily the machine running the Java test. A path that exists on the test runner may not be visible on the Grid node.

Selenium’s remote-download documentation describes managed downloads for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. For Grid-managed transfer, start Grid with --enable-managed-downloads true and enable se:downloadsEnabled for the session. In Java, augment a RemoteWebDriver when browser-specific interfaces are needed. Without managed download transfer, treat the returned download directory as a node-side path; do not assume a local Files.list() call can inspect it.

This distinction matters when designing the wait: local runs can poll the local directory directly, while a remote run needs to use the configured managed-download mechanism or otherwise access the browser node’s storage.

When a direct HTTP download is a better fit

If the export endpoint can safely be called with the same authentication and parameters as the UI, a direct authenticated HTTP request may be simpler than driving a browser for the file transfer. It avoids the native-dialog problem because the test handles the response body itself. Use this only when the application’s authentication, authorization, and export behavior can be reproduced without bypassing meaningful UI behavior that the test is meant to cover.

Keep the browser-driven route when the purpose of the test is to verify the page’s export control, its client-side parameters, or the complete user flow. A direct request can validate the downloaded workbook, but on its own it does not prove that the UI control works.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
Selenium cannot find or click Save Save is a native browser dialog, not a page element. Disable the prompt in the browser’s download settings and wait for the file in the configured directory.
The wait finds no Excel file The click did not trigger an export, the selector is wrong, the download went elsewhere, or the response was handled as a different file type. Confirm the page control and export behavior, inspect the configured directory, and check the server’s actual content type and content-disposition behavior.
The test passes but the workbook is truncated The browser was closed before the download finished, or filename existence was treated as completion. Keep the driver alive until the temporary state ends, require stable size, and validate workbook contents where necessary.
A test passes using an old workbook A stale file in a shared directory matched the completion condition. Use a unique directory per test or clean the directory before each export; filter by expected filename where possible.
Local checks cannot see a Grid download The file is on the browser node. Configure managed downloads on Grid and enable the session capability, or use a mechanism that can access node-side files.
Firefox still prompts or opens the file The actual MIME type is not configured for automatic saving, or Firefox’s ask/open handling applies. Set Firefox-specific download and MIME preferences for the response type; do not copy Chrome preference names.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not an Excel export or download mechanism; it does not replace the Selenium workflow above. If you also need a screenshot of a web page, a single GET request can capture it:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, and every feature is available on every plan. To try it, sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
