If you need to turn rendered HTML into a PDF with JavaScript, choose based on where rendering should happen. html2pdf.js converts in a browser and is suited to client-side downloads; Puppeteer uses browser automation to print a page to PDF and is a stronger fit for a server-side workflow. The trade-off is important: html2pdf.js rasterizes the result into an image, while browser printing brings browser installation and deployment considerations. This guide compares the documented approaches and shows how to make a PDF from a web page with ScreenshotNeo when a hosted capture API is preferable.

Which JavaScript HTML-to-PDF approach should you choose?

For a PDF generated on the visitor’s device, html2pdf.js offers a browser-only path. For a PDF generated by an automated browser, Puppeteer exposes Chrome’s print-to-PDF behavior through JavaScript. Neither approach guarantees identical output for every document or deployment: test your own pages, styles, fonts, and runtime.

Approach Where it runs Output characteristics Best fit
html2pdf.js In a web browser; its project documentation says it does not run in Node.js. Renders through html2canvas and jsPDF; the resulting page content is image-based, so text is not selectable or searchable and files can be large. Client-side PDF download where an image-like rendering is acceptable.
Puppeteer Browser automation, commonly run from a Node.js application or script. Calls Chrome’s PDF printing; print CSS media is used by default. Automated PDF generation that should use browser print layout and styles.
Playwright Browser automation with browser binaries and operating-system dependencies to manage. The material cited here does not establish a complete current PDF API comparison with Puppeteer. A candidate to evaluate if it fits the wider browser automation stack you use.

These are the documented options covered here, not an exhaustive market ranking. html2pdf.js is documented at its project repository; Puppeteer’s PDF behavior is documented in the Page.pdf API; Chrome describes PDF generation among Puppeteer’s uses in Chrome for Developers.

Use html2pdf.js for a client-side download

html2pdf.js packages a sequence of operations: `.from()`, `.toContainer()`, `.toCanvas()`, `.toImg()`, `.toPdf()`, and `.save()`. That sequence explains its output and helps locate trouble: the HTML is cloned into a container, rendered to canvas and an image, then placed into a PDF. Because this is a browser-side workflow, run it in a browser rather than in a Node.js process.

Install and load it

The project supports npm and browser bundles. For an npm-based web application, add the package:

npm install html2pdf.js

Then import it in browser-side application code. For example, with a bundler that supports default imports:

import html2pdf from 'html2pdf.js';

const element = document.querySelector('#invoice');
if (!element) throw new Error('Could not find #invoice');

html2pdf().from(element).save('invoice.pdf');

Alternatively, load the browser bundle using the installation instructions provided by the project repository. Do not move this code into a Node.js server script: the project explicitly requires a browser runtime.

Prepare the content and verify the result

  1. Render the complete content in the page before invoking the converter. If the page uses images or fonts that load asynchronously, wait until they are ready before capturing.
  2. Choose a stable element that contains only the material intended for the PDF, such as an invoice or report container.
  3. Run the conversion and inspect several pages, not just the first one. Check page breaks, clipping, image quality, and the total file size.
  4. Test long documents and the actual content variations your application produces. The project lists canvas dimension limits that can yield blank output for very large documents.

The minimal `.from(element).save()` example uses the library’s documented workflow without assuming option names or behavior not established here. Consult the project documentation for current configuration details before depending on advanced page sizing or layout controls.

Use Puppeteer to print a page in an automated browser

Puppeteer’s `Page.pdf()` generates a PDF using print CSS media by default. This means styles inside `@media print` may determine what appears, rather than the screen layout. If the intended PDF should match screen media, emulate screen media before calling `page.pdf()`. Chrome’s print output also modifies colors by default; the Puppeteer documentation points to `-webkit-print-color-adjust` when exact colors are needed.

Runnable Node.js example

Install Puppeteer following its current setup guidance, then run a script like this. It opens a URL, waits for the page’s load event, and writes the PDF to disk:

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
  try {
    const page = await browser.newPage();
    await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'load' });
    await page.pdf({ path: 'page.pdf', format: 'A4', printBackground: true });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

For a page that must use screen styles instead of print styles, add this before `page.pdf()`:

await page.emulateMediaType('screen');

For color-sensitive output, set the relevant print CSS in the page you control, for example:

@media print {
  .brand-color {
    -webkit-print-color-adjust: exact;
    print-color-adjust: exact;
  }
}

Check current Puppeteer installation and API guidance at Page.pdf and Chrome for Developers. The exact launch and deployment requirements depend on the environment where the script runs.

What to check before choosing a library

Runtime and deployment

  • Browser-only requirement: html2pdf.js must run in a browser. It is not a server-side Node.js converter.
  • Browser automation: Puppeteer depends on a browser runtime. Playwright’s documentation makes browser binaries, operating-system dependencies, and browser cache management explicit deployment concerns; budget for installation and maintenance when evaluating browser automation.

Playwright is a reasonable candidate to assess if it fits your automation infrastructure, but the cited material does not establish it as a drop-in replacement for Puppeteer’s PDF API. Verify the current API and behavior in the project documentation before making that decision: Playwright browser documentation.

Text, fidelity, and document size

html2pdf.js turns rendered content into an image in the PDF. Readers therefore cannot select or search that text, and image-based output may be large. The project also notes imperfect html2canvas rendering and cloning issues. If searchable text, faithful text layout, or smaller PDFs matter, assess browser printing against representative documents rather than assuming either route will meet the requirement.

Page breaks, fonts, and scale

Before shipping, test the longest expected document, its largest images, and pages with unusual content. Pay particular attention to cloned elements and root-element resizing, which the html2pdf.js project identifies as possible causes of layout changes and reflow. Canvas dimension limits can make very large captures blank. For browser printing, test print styles, loaded fonts, page breaks, and the actual browser runtime used in production.

Troubleshooting common HTML-to-PDF problems

Symptom Likely cause What to do
`html2pdf.js` fails in a Node.js script The library is documented as browser-only. Run it in browser-side code, or use browser automation such as Puppeteer for an automated browser workflow.
PDF text cannot be selected or searched html2pdf.js places rendered content into the PDF as an image. If selectable/searchable text is essential, evaluate browser printing with representative pages.
PDF is unexpectedly large Image-based output can increase file size. Test image dimensions and document length; compare output from browser printing for the same content.
Layout shifts or content is clipped Canvas rendering, element cloning, resizing, or page-break behavior can affect the result. Capture a representative page, inspect the cloned/rendered output, simplify problematic layout, and test the longest document.
Very large html2pdf.js output is blank The project lists HTML canvas dimension limits as a possible cause. Reduce the captured content or split the document into smaller sections, then test the resulting PDFs.
Puppeteer PDF differs from the screen `Page.pdf()` uses print CSS media by default. Use print styles intentionally, or call `page.emulateMediaType(‘screen’)` before generating the PDF if screen media is desired.
Printed colors look different Print output modifies colors by default. For content you control, use the documented `-webkit-print-color-adjust` approach and verify the output in the target runtime.
Browser automation fails to install or deploy Browser binaries or operating-system dependencies may be missing; browser cache configuration can also matter. Follow the automation project’s current browser installation guidance and validate it in the same deployment environment used for generation.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a PDF of a URL without managing browser automation in your own app, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API with PDF capture and an MCP server for AI agents. Its capture options include paper size, margins, landscape orientation, and page ranges. One GET request can return a PDF; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for current parameters.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -d format=pdf -o page.pdf

The call uses the API endpoint and key parameter; set the PDF format for a PDF response. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides `take_screenshot`, `get_page_info`, and `capture_pdf` tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Cost, performance, and reliability considerations

html2pdf.js runs in the browser already serving your page, so it avoids deploying a separate browser automation service, but conversion work happens on the visitor’s device and large canvas outputs can be costly in time, memory, and file size. Puppeteer centralizes generation in an automated browser, which gives an application a programmable print workflow but requires browser setup and environment maintenance. The cited documentation does not provide comparable benchmark figures, so measure conversion time, memory use, output size, and failure rates using your own documents and production-like runtime.

For repeatable results, pin and update library/browser dependencies deliberately, test output after changes to templates or fonts, and keep a small set of real documents as regression cases. If a PDF is business-critical, verify that the generated file exists and can be opened, and log enough context to reproduce failures without recording sensitive page contents unnecessarily.
