Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf Selenium cannot launch PhantomJS, first determine which layer is failing: the PhantomJS executable or its runtime libraries, the bundled GhostDriver WebDriver service, the Selenium client and its capabilities, or the host environment. PhantomJS is a legacy browser path, so there is no one fix that applies to every startup error. Check the executable outside Selenium, verify GhostDriver starts and listens where your client expects, then compare with a currently documented Selenium browser-driver path. This guide covers those checks and the evidence needed to decide whether to repair or migrate.
Why PhantomJS launch errors need a layered diagnosis
PhantomJS’s WebDriver support comes from GhostDriver, a Remote WebDriver implementation. The GhostDriver project identifies version 1.2.0 as integrated into PhantomJS 2.1.1. That means a failed Selenium session can involve more than the Selenium binding: the PhantomJS binary must run, GhostDriver must start, and the client must be able to create a session using compatible protocol capabilities. GhostDriver project repository.
The PhantomJS download page documents version 2.1.1, but it is an old page and its current binary availability or compatibility with a particular host is not established by that documentation. For Linux, it lists Fontconfig and the GLIBCXX_3.4.9 and GLIBC_2.7 runtime requirements. Check those against your actual operating system and architecture rather than assuming every launch failure is a Selenium bug. PhantomJS download page.
Capture the full exception and process output before changing versions or capabilities. The exact exception, language binding, Selenium and PhantomJS versions, operating system and architecture, and whether the service is local or remote determine which branch below applies.

Collect the details that identify the failing layer
Record these items from the failed run. Redact credentials, cookies and sensitive URLs before sharing logs.
- The complete exception, including nested causes and any driver or browser process output.
- Language binding and exact Selenium version.
- Operating system, version and CPU architecture.
- PhantomJS version and the executable path used by the test.
- The complete launch command or driver configuration, including the port and endpoint if using a separate service.
- Whether the failure occurs before the browser process starts, while GhostDriver starts, during the client connection, or when Selenium creates a session.
- Whether the same test or a minimal session works with a currently documented browser and driver.
Selenium’s logging guidance explains how to set language-specific logging levels and recommends paying attention to actionable warnings, including deprecations. Use the binding’s own logging documentation to enable diagnostic output for your version. Selenium: logging Selenium commands.
Check the PhantomJS executable before debugging Selenium
Verify the path and permissions
Confirm that the path configured in your test points to the intended executable, that the file exists on the machine running it, and that the process user can execute it. Try starting that same executable outside the Selenium test. If the operating system cannot run it independently, changing Selenium capabilities will not repair the binary or its environment.

On Linux, compare the host’s available runtime libraries with the PhantomJS page’s stated requirements: Fontconfig, GLIBCXX_3.4.9 and GLIBC_2.7. A missing library or incompatible runtime is a plausible cause when the process exits immediately, but confirm it from the operating system’s error output rather than treating it as a diagnosis without logs.

Be cautious with legacy downloads
The PhantomJS download page documents 2.1.1 and its platform packages, but the page is old. Verify that a binary is still obtainable and suitable for your OS and architecture before following an installation command from an old tutorial. Avoid replacing a working environment with an unverified binary just to make a version number match.
Start and verify the GhostDriver service
The GhostDriver repository documents the historical launch form phantomjs --webdriver=PORT. For example, to request port 8910:

phantomjs --webdriver=8910
This is legacy project guidance, not a claim that PhantomJS is a currently supported Selenium browser target. Use it to isolate whether the PhantomJS/GhostDriver process can start in your environment.
- Run the command on the machine that should host the service, using the executable you verified independently.
- Watch the terminal or process logs. Confirm the process remains alive instead of exiting with a library, permission, or startup error.
- Check that the selected port is available and that local firewall, container networking, or remote-host rules allow the client to reach it.
- Configure the Selenium client to connect to the exact host and port where GhostDriver is listening. A running service on one port does not help a client pointed at another.
- If the client is on another machine or in a container, verify routing from that client’s network namespace; localhost refers to the client’s own environment, not automatically the service host.
The repository describes GhostDriver as a Remote WebDriver implementation and documents the integration in PhantomJS 2.1.1. See the GhostDriver project repository for the historical architecture and launch details.
Separate a PhantomJS-specific failure from a Selenium problem
Run the smallest equivalent session against another browser and driver named in Selenium’s current browser-driver documentation. Selenium recommends trying the same operation across multiple browsers to help distinguish a Selenium issue from a driver-specific one. If the comparison browser starts while PhantomJS does not, focus on the PhantomJS executable, GhostDriver, or compatibility path. If both fail, investigate shared Selenium setup, permissions, network access, and test configuration. Selenium: troubleshooting assistance.

Keep this test minimal: create a session, navigate to a simple page, and quit. Do not initially include application-specific waits, authentication, or a large capability set. This isolates startup from later page-loading or synchronization failures. Selenium notes that poor synchronization is a common Selenium-related error; that warning is useful for tests that fail after a session starts, but it does not by itself explain a process that cannot launch.
Review capabilities and protocol changes after a Selenium upgrade
If PhantomJS worked before a Selenium upgrade, inspect the exact capabilities sent when the session is created. Selenium 4 uses the W3C WebDriver protocol by default; malformed or noncompliant capabilities can prevent session creation. A legacy PhantomJS client or configuration may rely on older protocol assumptions, but without the exception and serialized capabilities this remains a hypothesis, not a universal explanation. Selenium: upgrade to Selenium 4.
- Compare the effective capabilities before and after the upgrade, not just the source configuration.
- Remove obsolete or incorrectly nested capability values and use the format expected by your binding and Selenium version.
- Look for an explicit session-creation or invalid-capability error; distinguish it from an executable-not-found or process-exited error.
- Try the minimal session without optional capabilities, then add required settings one at a time.
Choose whether to keep debugging or migrate
Selenium Manager is included beginning with Selenium 4.6 and is used when a driver is unavailable. It helps manage supported browser-driver paths; it is not an automatic repair mechanism for PhantomJS. Selenium’s current driver documentation names browser-driver options but does not list PhantomJS. Selenium: unable to locate driver and Selenium Manager.
Best Value
| Path | What to verify | What the available documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Keep PhantomJS temporarily | Binary availability, host runtime libraries, GhostDriver process, endpoint, and session capabilities | PhantomJS 2.1.1 and GhostDriver’s historical launch pattern are documented; current compatibility with your host and Selenium binding is not established. |
| Use a currently documented browser-driver path | That your browser and driver are named in Selenium’s current guidance and that your tests work with their behavior | Selenium documents browser-driver options and Selenium Manager’s role. The cited sources do not establish behavior parity with PhantomJS. |
For maintained automation, migration to a browser and driver path in current Selenium documentation is the practical direction. Validate test behavior after migration: the cited documentation does not promise that another browser behaves identically to PhantomJS.

| Symptom | Likely layer to inspect | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Executable not found or cannot be started | Path, permissions, OS/architecture, or runtime libraries | Run the configured binary independently as the same user; on Linux, check the documented Fontconfig and GLIBC/GLIBCXX requirements. |
| PhantomJS starts and exits immediately | Binary/runtime failure or GhostDriver startup | Read process output, verify the port, and test the documented --webdriver=PORT mode. |
| Service remains up but the client cannot connect | Endpoint, port, hostname, firewall, container or network routing | Confirm the listening host and port and make the client target that reachable endpoint. |
| Connection works but session creation fails | Capabilities, protocol assumptions, or client/driver compatibility | Inspect serialized capabilities and try a minimal session, particularly after a Selenium 4 upgrade. |
| Session starts, then navigation or element actions fail | Page behavior or synchronization, not necessarily startup | Inspect the later exception and wait strategy; do not treat a synchronization failure as proof that the browser failed to launch. |
| Another browser works but PhantomJS does not | PhantomJS-specific binary, GhostDriver, or compatibility | Use the isolated result to focus debugging on the legacy PhantomJS path. |

If your goal is to capture a website screenshot rather than run a browser automation test, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. It can return PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. This is a different tool from Selenium: it captures a page and does not replace a test suite that needs browser interaction or assertions.
For example, using cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted before capture and 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets can be removed; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Does Selenium Manager install PhantomJS?
Do not rely on Selenium Manager for PhantomJS. Selenium’s documented Manager workflow concerns browser-driver paths in its current guidance, which does not list PhantomJS.
Is every launch error caused by an outdated capability?
No. A capability or protocol mismatch can prevent session creation, but an executable failure, missing runtime library, stopped service, or unreachable endpoint can fail earlier. The exception and process output distinguish these cases.
Does a successful PhantomJS session prove the test is synchronized?
No. Launch and session creation only establish that the browser session started. Navigation and element-action failures can still result from timing or synchronization issues.
