ElementClickInterceptedException means Selenium found your target, but another element is occupying the point where Selenium would click. The reliable fix is to identify that obstruction, synchronize with the page state that removes it, and then click the element at a usable viewport position. A fixed sleep or an unconditional JavaScript click can hide the cause without reproducing what a user can actually do.
Use the workflow below for overlays, cookie banners, sticky headers, animations, modal dialogs, and ambiguous locators. It also explains why elementToBeClickable can pass immediately before the click still fails.
What the exception actually says
Selenium raises ElementClickInterceptedException when the intended click would be received by a different element. The target can exist in the DOM and be visible, yet its clickable point is covered by a fixed navigation bar, consent banner, modal, loading mask, animation layer, or another matching element.
WebDriver performs a normal pointer-style click at the center of the target. Therefore, “present” and “visible” do not prove that the center is unobstructed. A button partly visible at the bottom of the viewport can still fail if its center sits under a sticky header.
elementToBeClickable is a synchronization aid, not a guarantee that the next instant will remain unobstructed. An overlay can appear between the wait returning and the click, or the page can reflow while the click is being dispatched.
1. Capture the obstruction before changing the test
Start with evidence from the failing run. Do not immediately add a longer timeout or replace the click with JavaScript.
- Save the complete exception text, including the element Selenium says would receive the click.
- Capture a screenshot at the failure point and record the browser window size, current URL, and locator used for the target.
- Inspect the reported coordinates in developer tools. Look for a fixed header, cookie-consent layer, modal, spinner, animation container, newsletter prompt, chat widget, or a duplicate element matched by a broad locator.
- Check whether a recent navigation, AJAX update, or client-side route change is still modifying the page.
- Verify that the locator identifies one intended interactive element rather than a hidden template copy or an element from a previous view.
The element named in the exception is often the fastest clue: it tells you what is painted above the target at the attempted click point. If the failure is intermittent, collect several screenshots; timing-dependent overlays may not be present on every run.

2. Make the page and locator deterministic
Before waiting for a click, confirm that the test is on the expected page and that the preceding action has completed. Browser page-load completion does not mean that JavaScript-rendered controls, overlays, or data-driven components have reached their final state.
Use a specific locator
Prefer a stable ID, data attribute, or narrowly scoped CSS selector. A selector such as button may match a hidden duplicate, a disabled control, and the visible control at once. If the application renders a list, scope the locator to the correct row or panel.
Reacquire after a reflow
Keep the locator, not an old element reference, as the source of truth. After a route change, modal close, scroll-triggered render, or major DOM update, locate the element again and apply the wait to the fresh reference. This prevents an interaction aimed at a node whose position or state has changed.
3. Wait for the state the click requires
Use an explicit wait tied to the condition that matters. If a known overlay blocks the page, wait for that overlay to become invisible or be removed. Then wait for the target to be clickable and perform the action.

The selectors above are illustrative; they are not universal names. If the overlay is removed from the DOM instead of merely hidden, invisibility waits handle either case. If the application has several masks, wait on the one that actually covers the target or use a condition that reflects the page’s ready state.

Why fixed sleeps are a poor repair
time.sleep(5) pauses for a fixed duration without checking whether the overlay has gone, whether the request finished, or whether an animation restarted. It makes fast runs slower and slow runs unreliable. State-based polling finishes as soon as the required condition is true and fails with a useful timeout when it never becomes true.
4. Correct viewport and sticky-header problems
When the obstruction is caused by scroll position, move the target so its center is away from the fixed header or footer. Scroll to the center rather than accepting the browser’s default top or bottom alignment.

# Reacquire after scrolling in case the page reflowed.
button = wait.until(
EC.element_to_be_clickable(

)

button.click()
The exact offset depends on the site’s header height. If scrolling triggers lazy rendering or a layout shift, reacquire the element and wait again. Selenium’s Actions API can also move the pointer to an element when your test needs a user-like pointer movement; the same requirement remains: the click point must not be covered.
5. Handle the real overlay or modal
Repair the application state a human would use rather than deleting the obstruction blindly.
Cookie or consent banner
Click the banner’s accept or reject control, wait for the banner to disappear, and only then locate the underlying target. This both clears the obstruction and exercises the consent path your users encounter.
Modal dialog
Close the dialog through its visible close, cancel, or confirmation control. If the dialog is expected, make it part of the test flow; if it is unexpected, capture its contents and fail with that evidence instead of hiding it.

Wait until the transition completes or the animated element reaches its settled state. If your test controls the application, a test-mode setting that disables nonessential animation is usually more maintainable than arbitrary sleeps.
Removing an overlay with JavaScript can make a test pass while skipping required application behavior. Use DOM removal only when the test is explicitly about a controlled fixture and the omission is intentional.
6. Use JavaScript click only as a deliberate exception
This call bypasses WebDriver’s normal center-point hit-testing:
driver.execute_script("arguments[0].click();", button)
It is appropriate only when the application intentionally supports a programmatic click and the test does not need to verify real pointer interaction. It can hide a broken z-index, an inaccessible control, a consent requirement, or a genuine user failure. Document the reason in the test, and keep at least one pointer-based test for important user journeys.

7. Avoid wait-configuration traps
Do not casually combine long implicit waits with explicit waits. Selenium can apply the implicit delay during each operation inside an explicit wait, producing unpredictable total durations. Prefer one clear synchronization strategy, normally explicit waits targeted at the state needed for the next command.
Keep timeout values proportional to the application’s known response range, but treat a timeout as diagnostic information. Increasing it without identifying the obstruction only postpones the failure.
Common symptoms, causes, and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Focused fix |
|---|---|---|
| The same coordinate is named every time | Fixed header, footer, consent layer, or modal covers the center | Inspect that element, dismiss it, or scroll the target to the center before reacquiring it. |
| Failures occur only during page load | Loading mask, asynchronous render, or animation | Wait for the mask or a stable application state, then wait for clickability. |
elementToBeClickable passes but click fails intermittently |
An overlay appears or the layout shifts after the condition is checked | Wait on the overlay itself, scroll to a stable position, reacquire the element, and click immediately. |
| Changing the locator changes the error | Broad locator matches hidden or duplicate elements | Scope the selector to the intended container and verify the matched count. |
| JavaScript click passes but users still cannot click | The script bypassed hit-testing or an application state requirement | Restore a normal click and repair the covering element or interaction flow. |
| Long waits make the suite unpredictable | Implicit and explicit waits are stacked or polling the wrong condition | Remove the unnecessary implicit wait and poll one explicit, state-based condition. |
A practical decision framework
Choose the smallest repair that addresses the observed cause:
- Overlay or modal: perform the visible dismiss, accept, or completion action, then wait for disappearance.
- Animation or asynchronous render: wait for a stable state rather than elapsed time.
- Sticky header or viewport: scroll the element’s center into an unobstructed position and reacquire it.
- Ambiguous locator: narrow the locator and confirm the intended element is unique.
- Intentional programmatic interaction: use JavaScript click only with a documented reason and a separate pointer-interaction check where user fidelity matters.
Evaluate a proposed fix on four axes: does it remove the actual cause, preserve the user interaction you intend to test, remain stable when load time varies, and describe maintainable application behavior?

Reliability and performance notes
- Capture the browser size and screenshots in continuous integration so viewport-specific failures can be reproduced.
- Use stable selectors owned by the application team, such as dedicated test attributes, instead of styling classes that change during redesigns.
- Wait for one meaningful condition per interaction. A chain of unrelated waits often masks which state is missing.
- After a click that triggers navigation or a re-render, wait for the next page’s identifying element before continuing.
- Keep the normal click as the default. It detects regressions in stacking order, responsive layout, consent handling, and accessibility that a JavaScript click may conceal.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an element be visible and still be intercepted?
Yes. Selenium checks the center point used for the click; another element can cover that point even when part of the target remains visible.
Should I increase the timeout first?
No. First identify the covering element or unstable state. A longer timeout helps only when it is waiting on the correct condition.
When is JavaScript click defensible?
Use it when a programmatic click is intentionally what you are testing. Do not use it to conceal a pointer-interaction defect or an overlay that real users must handle.
