PhantomJS screenshots are still images, not recordings. A call to page.render() captures the page as it appears at one moment; choosing GIF as the output format changes the image encoding, but does not make that call collect successive animation frames. To preserve motion, capture multiple page states and encode those frames into an animated image or video.
Why a GIF on the page becomes a still screenshot
An animated GIF displayed in a browser changes over time. A screenshot call samples the rendered page at a particular moment and writes that visual state to an image. The PhantomJS screen-capture documentation describes rendering a page and saving a screenshot, and lists PNG, JPEG, GIF, and PDF among its output formats. That list describes output formats; it does not say that a single render records an animation over time. PhantomJS Screen Capture documentation
This is the important distinction: GIF output format is not the same as recording browser animation. A GIF-encoded screenshot can still contain only one captured state. The same point applies to renderBase64, which is documented as rendering a page to an image buffer and supports PNG, GIF, and JPEG output. PhantomJS renderBase64 API

So if a PhantomJS screenshot appears to show a frozen GIF, that does not by itself establish a GIF-decoder bug or a particular version defect. The documented operation is a page render to an image, not a time-based screen recording. The project documentation reviewed here does not provide a version-specific guarantee about which animation frame an individual capture will show.

Does PhantomJS support GIF output?
Yes. PhantomJS documentation lists GIF as an image output format. That means the rendered image may be encoded as a GIF file; it does not mean that one invocation captures multiple frames from an animated source. The distinction is analogous to saving a photograph in a format capable of animation: the file extension alone cannot supply frames that were never captured.
To create visible motion, the workflow needs two separate operations:
- Capture frames: render the page repeatedly at different moments, or deliberately advance the animation and render each chosen state.
- Encode the frames: combine the resulting images using a tool such as FFmpeg to make a video or animated output.
A published PhantomJS example uses repeated PNG renders and FFmpeg encoding for this purpose. It also warns that timing can drift because page.render() is synchronous and may take long enough to interfere with the intended capture interval. veltman’s PhantomJS GIF example

Capture successive frames with PhantomJS and FFmpeg
The following is a basic timer-driven pattern: open a page, save a sequence of PNG files, then ask FFmpeg to encode them. It is a starting point, not a promise of frame-accurate timing. The rendering work itself takes time, and a timer cannot make a synchronous render complete at an exact interval.
1. Save a sequence of PNG frames
Save this as capture.js. It takes a URL and an output directory as arguments. Ensure the directory exists before running it. The example captures an initial frame and then schedules later captures; the count and delay are illustrative values to adjust for the page and desired duration.
var page = require('webpage').create();
var system = require('system');
var url = system.args[1];
var outputDir = system.args[2] || 'frames';
var frameCount = 30;
var intervalMs = 100;
var frame = 0;
if (!url) {
console.log('Usage: phantomjs capture.js URL [output-directory]');
phantom.exit(1);
}
page.viewportSize = { width: 1280, height: 720 };
page.open(url, function (status) {
if (status !== 'success') {
console.log('Could not load page: ' + status);
phantom.exit(1);
return;
}
function saveFrame() {
var name = outputDir + '/frame' + ('0000' + frame).slice(-4) + '.png';
page.render(name);
frame += 1;
if (frame >= frameCount) {
phantom.exit();
} else {
setTimeout(saveFrame, intervalMs);
}
}
saveFrame();
});
Run it with the URL to capture, for example:
mkdir -p frames
phantomjs capture.js https://example.com frames
The output should be files named frame0000.png, frame0001.png, and so on. The page’s animation must be running and visible in the rendered page for successive captures to differ. If the content is static, paused, blocked, or not yet loaded, repeating the render will not create motion.

2. Encode the frames
With FFmpeg installed and available on your PATH, run this from the directory containing the frames folder:
ffmpeg -framerate 10 -i frames/frame%04d.png -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p animation.mp4
This command makes a video from the numbered PNG sequence. The example’s -framerate 10 describes the rate FFmpeg assigns to the input sequence; it does not prove that PhantomJS actually sampled the live page at perfectly uniform 100-millisecond intervals. If an animated GIF is specifically required as the deliverable, the captured frames also need to be encoded into GIF format with a suitable FFmpeg palette workflow. The essential requirement remains the same: there must be multiple captured frames first.
When timer-based capture is not enough
Repeated timer-based screenshots are easiest when approximate timing is acceptable. They are less suitable when the output must preserve precise animation timing, synchronize with another event, or reproduce a specific animation state exactly. Because each render blocks while it runs, a slow page or expensive screenshot can delay later captures and cause the sequence to drift.
Where the page animation can be controlled, a more deterministic method is to step it explicitly to chosen states and render each state. The published example identifies this as an option, but it depends on controlling the animation. That condition matters: it is not a general fix for every third-party page or every animated asset. If you cannot control the page’s animation, test the capture cadence against the actual page and treat the resulting timing as approximate.
- Use repeated timed renders when a rough visual sequence is sufficient and the page can animate normally.
- Use explicit stepping when you control the page and need chosen animation states rather than relying on wall-clock sampling.
- Use another capture approach if you need a reliable recording of an uncontrolled page and cannot tolerate drift; a still-image API is not a substitute for a frame-recording pipeline.
Or skip the browser setup
If your requirement is a clean still screenshot rather than a moving capture, ScreenshotNeo takes a screenshot with one GET request. It does not turn a single screenshot into an animation or replace the multiple-frame workflow above. Its API can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; its cookie-banner, popup, and chat-widget cleanup is performed before a still capture.

Common problems and fixes
- The output is still only one frame: One call to
page.render()makes a still image. Save multiple renders as separate files, then encode the sequence. - Several frames look identical: Confirm the animation is actually playing and that the page has finished loading before capture. A static image, paused animation, or capture repeated too quickly to observe visible changes can produce identical-looking frames.
- The animation appears to speed up, slow down, or drift: Synchronous rendering can take time and delay scheduled captures. Reduce page/render overhead, allow the sequence more time, or explicitly step an animation you control; do not assume the timer interval is the real sampling interval.
- FFmpeg cannot find the input sequence: Check that the output directory exists, that the files use the expected four-digit numbering, and that the command is run from the directory containing that folder. The input pattern must match the generated names.
- The PhantomJS page does not load: The sample checks the page-open status and exits on failure. Verify the URL is reachable from the machine running PhantomJS and that the page can load in its environment before diagnosing the frame encoder.
What PhantomJS’s project status means
The PhantomJS project landing page says: “Important: PhantomJS development is suspended until further notice (more details).” PhantomJS project page That status is relevant when choosing whether to build a new long-lived capture system around PhantomJS. The documented screenshot behavior still explains why one render does not record a moving GIF, but the sources cited here do not establish a version-specific GIF decoding fault. The official FAQ also discusses background rendering, which is distinct from capturing an animation over time. PhantomJS FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Will saving PhantomJS output with a .gif extension make it animated?
No. A filename extension does not add animation frames; the capture process must produce multiple states and an encoder must combine them.
Can repeated PhantomJS renders be used to make an MP4?
Yes, if you save a sequence of frames and encode them with a tool such as FFmpeg. The timing may be irregular because rendering is synchronous.
Does the PhantomJS documentation identify a specific animated-GIF bug?
The cited documentation describes page rendering and supported output formats, but does not establish a version-specific GIF decoder bug.
