WebDriverArgumentException when clicking a submit button does not automatically mean the button is broken. In Selenium for .NET, WebDriverArgumentException means a WebDriver command received an invalid argument. Python usually reports the related condition as InvalidArgumentException. A button covered by an overlay or a button that is not ready produces different click exceptions. Read the complete exception, identify your language binding and versions, then diagnose the command, locator, element state and click point in that order.
Start with the exact exception
The line containing submit.click() is only where Selenium noticed the failure. It does not prove that the click argument is wrong. Copy the full exception type, message and stack trace, and record:
- Selenium language binding (.NET, Python, Java, JavaScript or another binding).
- Selenium version, browser version and WebDriver version.
- The exact command and locator.
- The page state and markup around the submit control.
Names differ between bindings. The .NET API defines WebDriverArgumentException for an invalid argument passed to a WebDriver command (Selenium .NET API). Python defines InvalidArgumentException for invalid or malformed command arguments (Python exception reference). Neither name is interchangeable with an intercepted or non-interactable click.
Distinguish the three failures that look alike

Python lists these click-related classes separately from InvalidArgumentException. MDN’s invalid argument reference likewise describes a malformed value supplied to a WebDriver command. The message and stack trace are therefore more useful than the browser’s visual state alone.

Use a locator that identifies the real submit control
A page may contain a visible <button type="submit">, a hidden duplicate used by a responsive layout, an input with type="submit", or a button whose label is not stable. Confirm the element in browser developer tools and make the locator as specific as the page permits.

input[type="submit"]Do not assume the first matching element is the intended one. Check its display, visibility, dimensions, disabled state and containing form. If several controls match, use a stable form identifier, an accessible role/name, or a data attribute supplied for testing. Selenium’s interaction guide explains that click applies to an element, while submit applies only to form elements: Interacting with web elements.
Wait for the element to be present and usable
Finding a node in the DOM does not mean it is ready for a user. Frameworks often render a disabled button first, replace it after validation, or animate a panel into place. Use an explicit wait for the state your test requires instead of adding an arbitrary sleep.

submit.click()element_to_be_clickable checks visibility and enabled state. If it times out, investigate why the page never reaches that state; increasing the timeout can hide a validation or rendering defect. The selector above is an example and must match your page.

submit.Click();Use the equivalent explicit-wait condition supplied by your binding when available. Keep the wait tied to a meaningful state such as enabled, visible or a specific overlay disappearing.
Check what is covering the click point
Selenium’s element click is performed at the element’s center (interaction semantics). A fixed cookie notice, modal backdrop, sticky navigation bar or in-progress animation can occupy that center even when the button is visible around its edges. Selenium’s troubleshooting guide calls out click interception, animations and explicit waits (Understanding Common Errors).
- Pause the test at the failure and inspect the page at the exact viewport size.
- Use developer tools to identify the topmost element at the button’s center.
- Dismiss a consent dialog through its real control, wait for the overlay to disappear, or wait for the animation to finish.
- Scroll the button into view if a sticky header may cover it, then re-check the center.
- Retry a normal element click only after the page is in the intended state.
A JavaScript-triggered click is not a general fix. It can bypass the user-like checks that expose an overlay, disabled state or wrong target. Selenium recommends clicking the applicable form submission button rather than using the separate form submit method.
Re-locate after rerenders and navigation
Single-page applications may replace the button node after you locate it. If the DOM updates between locating and clicking, find the control again immediately before the click. A resulting stale-element exception is a different diagnosis from an invalid argument; rely on the actual class and message rather than the line number.

If it really is an argument exception
When the message remains WebDriverArgumentException or InvalidArgumentException after you verify the target, inspect the command inputs rather than changing click behavior:
- Check that the locator strategy and locator string are valid for the binding you use.
- Check script arguments for unsupported types, circular objects or values that cannot be serialized.
- Check URL, timeout, window, cookie and other command parameters for malformed values.
- Compare the binding’s Selenium version with the browser-driver combination documented for your environment.
- Reduce the test to a minimal page and one command to identify which argument is rejected.
The references define what an invalid argument means, but they cannot identify an unknown script’s offending value without its code and versions. Do not infer a particular root cause from the exception title alone.

For a genuine form submission control, click the applicable button. Selenium’s official interaction guide states: “As such, it is recommended not to use this method and to click the applicable form submission button instead.” In Selenium 4, the separate submit method is implemented through script execution. Clicking the control better reflects the page’s validation, event handlers and enabled state.

Common symptoms and targeted fixes

Build a reproducible diagnosis
- Save the complete exception and stack trace, not just the final line.
- Record binding, Selenium, browser and driver versions and the viewport.
- Capture the page HTML and a screenshot at failure time, including overlays.
- Reduce the test to navigation, form setup, one locator and one click.
- Run the reduced case against a static test page to separate application markup from driver or binding behavior.
That record lets a maintainer tell an invalid command argument from interception, interactability, stale markup or a frame/window mistake. Without it, a proposed selector or timeout is only a guess.

When to ask for more information
A case-specific fix requires the minimal reproducible snippet, full exception text, binding and versions, locator, relevant HTML and whether an overlay or frame is present. Those details establish the failing command instead of assuming that every error reported at a submit click has the same cause.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing the browser usually fix WebDriverArgumentException?
Not by itself. First verify the command arguments and binding compatibility; browser changes are justified only when the recorded versions reveal a compatibility problem.
Should I add a fixed sleep before clicking?
Prefer an explicit wait for visibility, enabled state or overlay removal. A fixed sleep can make a test slower while still missing a variable rendering delay.
Can I use JavaScript to click the button?
Use it only for a deliberate, documented reason. It can bypass normal interaction checks and conceal the overlay, disabled state or wrong locator that the test should expose.
