To run Docker’s Docker Hub MCP server as a local process started by an MCP client, configure the client to invoke docker run --rm -i dhi.io/hub-mcp. The Docker Hardened Images guide says to authenticate to the dhi.io registry first with docker login dhi.io. This direct-image setup is distinct from Docker Desktop’s MCP Toolkit, which manages servers through a catalog, profiles and a gateway.
The example below is specifically for Docker’s Hub server, which works with Docker Hub image and repository information. For a different MCP server, use that server’s image and documented client configuration; the Hub image is not a generic launcher for every MCP server.
Choose how you want Docker to run the MCP server
There are three practical routes, depending on whether you already have an image, want Docker Desktop to manage a catalog, or need to modify the server itself.
| Route | What starts the server | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Direct image | Your MCP client launches docker run as a local subprocess. |
You have an image and a client that supports stdio-based MCP servers. |
| Docker MCP Toolkit | Docker Desktop manages a catalog server in a profile and connects a client through a gateway. | You want a managed catalog and profile workflow. |
| Build from source | You install dependencies and run the Docker Hub server’s Node.js project. | You need to inspect or modify the server, or prefer not to run the published image. |
The rest of the first procedure uses Docker’s documented dhi.io/hub-mcp image configuration for Claude Desktop. The image and registry instructions come from Docker’s Hardened Images guide; the configuration is a documented example, not a claim that a live pull was independently tested here.

- 【USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C: 10Gbps & Versatile Connectivity】The USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C port on the KAMRUI P2 small pc supports 10Gbps data transfer speeds and can also output DisplayPort 1.4 video. Together with Gigabit LAN, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth, you get a fast, flexible, and productive connected environment – wired or wireless.
Run the Docker Hub MCP image from a client
Prerequisites
- Docker must be installed and running on the same machine as the MCP client. The client invokes the local Docker command to start the container.
- Use an MCP client that can launch a local server process over standard input/output (stdio). The configuration below is for Claude Desktop.
- For this image, Docker’s guide instructs users to log in to the
dhi.ioregistry before pulling the example.
1. Log in to the image registry
In a terminal, run:
docker login dhi.io
Complete the registry authentication prompt as applicable to your account. The command authenticates Docker to dhi.io; it is not the same as supplying a Docker Hub personal access token (PAT) to the MCP server for private repository operations.
2. Add the server to Claude Desktop
In Claude Desktop’s MCP server configuration, add the following entry under mcpServers. Keep your existing entries if the file already contains other servers; do not replace the whole file with this fragment unless it is otherwise empty.
{
"mcpServers": {
"docker-hub": {
"command": "docker",
"args": ["run", "--rm", "-i", "dhi.io/hub-mcp"]
}
}
}
The client-specific location and reload procedure can vary by operating system and Claude Desktop version. Follow the client’s current instructions for opening its MCP configuration and restart or refresh it after saving. Do not paste this Docker-process example into a client that expects a different configuration format.
3. Understand what the Docker flags do
runstarts a container from the image. When the client launches the server process, Docker starts the image.--rmremoves the stopped container. It does not remove the downloaded image.-ikeeps standard input open, which is needed for the client’s stdio connection.dhi.io/hub-mcpis the Docker Hub MCP server image used in this example.
There is no published port in this invocation: the shown setup uses stdio rather than the server’s HTTP transport. Avoid adding port flags or changing transports unless the image’s documentation and your client configuration call for it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →4. Verify the connection
After restarting or refreshing the client, check that the Docker Hub server appears connected or enabled in the client’s MCP controls. Then try a low-risk request that uses one of the server’s tools, such as asking it to search for official nginx images on Docker Hub. A prompt is only a verification attempt: the useful confirmation is that the client invokes the tool and receives a result, not merely that it accepts the text.
Access private repositories with a Hub token
Public Docker Hub content can be queried without the optional Hub PAT. For authenticated requests involving private repositories or repository management, Docker’s Hardened Images example passes a token in HUB_PAT_TOKEN and supplies the Hub username as an argument.
{
"mcpServers": {
"docker-hub": {
"command": "docker",
"args": [
"run", "--rm", "-i",
"-e", "HUB_PAT_TOKEN=your-access-token",
"dhi.io/hub-mcp",
"--username", "<your username>"
]
}
}
}
Replace the sample values with your own token and username. Do not commit a live token to a shared configuration file or source repository. Use a secret or environment-injection method supported by your client and local setup; the Docker example establishes the variable and argument names, but does not prescribe how every client stores secrets. Give the token only the permissions needed for the operations you intend to perform.

Use Docker Desktop MCP Toolkit instead
The Toolkit is not another spelling of the direct docker run configuration. It is Docker Desktop’s catalog-and-gateway workflow for managing containerized MCP servers and connecting clients. Docker’s current Toolkit interface instructions apply to Docker Desktop 4.62 and later; earlier versions have different UI.
- Enable MCP Toolkit in Docker Desktop.
- Create or select a profile.
- Add the server you want from the catalog and configure any required fields.
- Connect the AI client using the Toolkit’s connection flow, or configure a compatible client manually as Docker documents.
- Verify that the client shows the gateway or server as connected or enabled, then make a low-risk request that should invoke a listed tool.
For a manually configured compatible client, Docker documents this stdio gateway command:
docker mcp gateway run --profile my_profile
Replace my_profile with the profile you selected. Follow the current Docker Toolkit instructions for your client’s configuration shape and connection checks. Docker’s guide gives claude mcp list for Claude Code and codex mcp list for Codex as verification examples; these are CLI checks, not universal commands for every MCP client.
Build Docker’s Hub server from source
If you want to inspect or change the server rather than run its published image, Docker’s hub-mcp repository documents a Node.js source route. Its prerequisites are Docker and Node.js 22 or later. From a local clone of that repository, the documented build and start commands are:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesnpm install
npm run build
npm start
The repository documents both stdio and HTTP transports: stdio is the default, and the HTTP default port is 3000. Public Docker Hub content can be queried by default; authenticated repository management needs a PAT and username. Use the repository’s own options and client examples for selecting transport and passing credentials. Do not assume a source-process JSON configuration will work unchanged with the container example: Docker’s Docker Hub MCP documentation and Hardened Images guide show different configuration approaches.
Check image compatibility and portability
Docker’s earlier image-building guidance recommends publishing multi-platform images for local clients and names amd64 and arm64. That is general guidance, not confirmation that every current tag of dhi.io/hub-mcp is available for both architectures. Confirm the actual image manifest and compatibility with your host and Docker installation when choosing an image or debugging a platform-related pull or startup problem.

Image tags, platform manifests, Docker Desktop interface labels and client configuration formats can change. The Toolkit version qualification above reflects the current guide’s stated scope; check the applicable Docker and client documentation when installing against a different version.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
Docker command not found or daemon unavailable
Likely cause: Docker is not installed, the Docker daemon is stopped, or the MCP client cannot find the Docker executable in its process environment.
Fix: Run docker from a terminal first and confirm Docker is available and running. If the terminal works but the client fails, check the client’s process environment and configure the executable path in the way that client supports.
Registry authentication or image pull fails
Likely cause: Docker is not logged in to the registry used by this image, or the registry credentials are not accepted.
Fix: Follow the image guide’s registry step, docker login dhi.io, and check the exact registry hostname and any authentication error returned by Docker. Do not substitute a Hub PAT intended for server requests for registry login credentials.
Client reports the server disconnected or exits immediately
Likely cause: Invalid JSON, a misplaced configuration entry, a Docker startup error, or a client that expects a different transport or config shape.

Public searches work but private repository requests do not
Likely cause: The image starts but the server has not received the Hub token or username needed for authenticated operations.
Fix: Configure HUB_PAT_TOKEN and --username as shown in the authenticated example. Check for a missing, expired or insufficiently permissioned token without printing its value into logs or shared files.
Container starts but no tool result appears
Likely cause: The client is connected to a different server/profile, the prompt did not trigger a tool, or the tool request encountered an access or network error.
Fix: Confirm the intended server or Toolkit profile is enabled, issue a request clearly requiring a Docker Hub lookup, and inspect the client’s tool-call status and server logs. A natural-language question alone does not establish that an MCP tool was invoked.
Architecture or platform error
Likely cause: The image tag lacks a compatible manifest for the host architecture or the local runtime cannot use the available platform.
Fix: Check the manifest and the image publisher’s platform information rather than assuming the image supports both amd64 and arm64. If you build or publish an image yourself, Docker’s guidance recommends a multi-platform image for local clients.
Or skip the browser setup
For website screenshots rather than Docker Hub repository tools, ScreenshotNeo is a separate API and MCP server: it is not an MCP image to substitute for hub-mcp. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF. Its screenshot workflow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Cost, lifecycle and operational notes
The direct Docker invocation uses --rm, so the stopped container is removed when the client stops it; the image remains available locally until removed separately. The Toolkit offers a managed server/profile workflow, while a source build adds dependency installation and build steps. Which is simpler depends on whether you value a direct local subprocess, managed catalog administration, or source-level control.
Docker’s July 8, 2025 blog reported 11 billion monthly image downloads and more than 14 million container images hosted on Docker Hub. Those are company-published figures dated to that post, not current counts or a measure of this MCP server’s performance. Running the public image does not require a Docker Personal subscription merely because the blog discusses using such a subscription to push images to others.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use this configuration with any Docker Hub MCP server?
No. The command and image here are for Docker’s dhi.io/hub-mcp server. Another server may use a different image, startup arguments, environment variables or transport.
Does Docker Desktop MCP Toolkit require the direct image configuration too?
No. Toolkit uses its catalog, profile and gateway workflow. The direct configuration has the client start Docker as a local process; choose one route based on how you want the server managed.
Does the example open port 3000?
No. The Docker image example is configured for stdio and does not publish an HTTP port. Port 3000 is the documented default for the source repository’s HTTP transport.
