If Selenium reaches a login URL but the page looks unfinished, do not assume that navigation completing means the login form is ready. A browser can report document.readyState == "complete" while JavaScript is still building or changing the interface. Put a limit on navigation, then wait explicitly for the login control or post-login state your test needs. If the failure is specific to PhantomJS, treat compatibility as a likely underlying cause: PhantomJS development is suspended, so moving to maintained headless Chrome or Firefox is the durable fix.

Why the login page appears to hang

There are two different problems that look similar: WebDriver may still be waiting for navigation, or navigation may have returned while the login interface is not yet usable. A page-load strategy normally waits for a browser readiness state; it does not promise that every JavaScript application has finished rendering, that a third-party script has responded, or that a particular input is visible.

With a modern single-page application, the initial document can load first and the login form can appear later. A script may also replace an initial element, redirect to an identity provider, or wait on a resource that never completes. A fixed sleep() does not distinguish these cases: it may be too short on a slow run and waste time on a fast one. A condition tied to the actual form or authenticated page is more reliable.

PhantomJS adds a separate risk. Its project homepage says, “Important: PhantomJS development is suspended until further notice.” Selenium support for PhantomJS has also been deprecated in favor of headless Chrome or Firefox. A login site that has changed its JavaScript, TLS requirements, or authentication flow may no longer behave properly in this old browser engine even if the same test once worked.

Fix the wait without hiding the failure

1. Bound the navigation wait

Set a page-load timeout before calling get(). If a resource keeps navigation open, Selenium can raise TimeoutException instead of holding the run indefinitely. The right limit depends on the application, network, and test environment; one reported case found 15 seconds workable, but that is not a universal value. The example below uses 20 seconds only as an adjustable starting point.

2. Wait for the precise login control

After navigation, wait for a stable, site-specific locator: for example, the username field, password field, or submit button. Prefer visibility before typing and clickability before clicking. Replace the sample locators with those for the page under test; username and button[type='submit'] are examples, not selectors guaranteed to exist on a particular site.

3. Wait for a meaningful result after submitting

A click returning does not prove authentication succeeded. Depending on the application, wait for a URL change, a known authenticated-page marker, or disappearance of the login form. If the site changes content without changing URL, waiting for a stable element on the destination view is usually more meaningful than waiting only for navigation.

Python example using maintained Chrome

This pattern assumes Selenium is installed, Chrome is available, and Selenium can start the matching Chrome driver in the environment. Supply the real URL, credentials through your test’s secure configuration, and selectors for your own page. Do not put production passwords directly in source control.

from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.common.exceptions import TimeoutException
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC

login_url = "https://example.com/login"
user = "YOUR_TEST_USERNAME"
secret = "YOUR_TEST_PASSWORD"

driver = webdriver.Chrome()
driver.set_page_load_timeout(20)

try:
    try:
        driver.get(login_url)
    except TimeoutException:
        # Navigation timed out. Inspect the current document before deciding
        # whether it is usable; do not silently treat this as a successful load.
        print("Navigation timed out at:", driver.current_url)
        print(driver.page_source)
        driver.save_screenshot("navigation-timeout.png")

    wait = WebDriverWait(driver, 20)
    username = wait.until(
        EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.NAME, "username"))
    )
    password = wait.until(
        EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.NAME, "password"))
    )
    username.send_keys(user)
    password.send_keys(secret)

    submit = wait.until(EC.element_to_be_clickable(
        (By.CSS_SELECTOR, "button[type='submit']")
    ))
    submit.click()

    # Use a destination marker instead if the application does not change URL.
    wait.until(EC.url_changes(login_url))
finally:
    driver.quit()

The timeout handler deliberately records evidence, but it does not make a timed-out page valid. If the necessary form is absent, the subsequent explicit wait should fail and expose that fact. For a stricter test, catch that wait’s TimeoutException separately and save the URL, page source, screenshot, and driver/browser logs before failing the test.

Use PhantomJS only as a short-term diagnostic

If you must reproduce a legacy failure before migrating, make the smallest change that isolates the cause. Keep a bounded navigation timeout, add explicit waits, and capture diagnostics. Avoid changing timeout, proxy, TLS, user agent, and JavaScript settings all at once: doing so can make the symptom disappear without identifying its cause.

HTTPS and TLS

If the same destination works over HTTP but fails over HTTPS in PhantomJS, inspect the TLS handshake, certificate chain, and installed SSL libraries. Historical PhantomJS reports describe sites rejecting the old SSLv3 default and list --ssl-protocol=tlsv1 or --ssl-protocol=any as workarounds, as well as upgrading to at least PhantomJS 1.9.8. These are legacy troubleshooting notes, not modern security recommendations. Do not weaken TLS on a current production browser to preserve an obsolete test engine; move the test to maintained Chrome or Firefox instead.

Proxy and network delays

PhantomJS troubleshooting notes report that on Windows, the default proxy can cause very large latency; --proxy-type=none was reported as a workaround. Apply that only if the environment is not meant to use a proxy. In managed networks, removing the proxy may break access or bypass required controls. Log resource requests and responses first, then determine whether the delay is at the proxy, destination, or browser.

Settings that must be applied before opening the page

The PhantomJS page API exposes settings including javascriptEnabled, userAgent, HTTP-authentication userName and password, resourceTimeout, and webSecurityEnabled. Its documentation says these settings apply to the initial page.open call, so configure them before opening the login URL. These are PhantomJS API settings, not interchangeable Selenium Python options. Do not disable web security as a routine login fix.

Choose page-load strategy deliberately

Selenium defines three page-load strategies. normal waits for the load event; eager returns after DOMContentLoaded; and none returns after the initial download. If images or third-party resources keep navigation open, eager or none may let the test take control sooner. They do not make the application ready sooner. With either faster strategy, explicitly wait for every field, button, and result the test uses, and expect that some resources may still be loading.

Change the strategy only after distinguishing a slow navigation from a late-rendered form. Otherwise, a faster handoff can simply move the failure from get() to the first element lookup. For a login flow, correctness of the ready condition matters more than shaving time off the navigation call.

Capture evidence and identify the failure class

At the point of failure, record current_url, page source, a screenshot, browser and driver logs, and resource/network details available in the setup. A useful diagnosis separates these cases rather than labeling all of them “page not loaded”:

  • TLS handshake or certificate failure: check the failing host and certificate path, especially if only HTTPS fails.
  • Redirect loop or unexpected redirect: inspect the final URL and redirect sequence; confirm whether the test has the expected starting URL and cookies.
  • One blocked or stalled third-party resource: identify its URL and status before changing page-load strategy or proxy settings.
  • JavaScript exception: inspect browser console output and application errors; PhantomJS troubleshooting recommends an error handler for JavaScript exceptions.
  • Missing cookie or changed authentication state: verify the test’s session setup and whether the login route redirects before the expected form is rendered.
  • Element lookup too early: if the form eventually appears and no browser-level error explains the gap, wait for the exact element condition rather than increasing a fixed sleep.

PhantomJS troubleshooting also recommends resource-request callbacks for observing requests. Save the first failing URL, status, and console error alongside each run so that a network issue is not confused with a selector or timing issue.

What should replace PhantomJS?

For new or maintained Selenium work, move to headless Chrome or Firefox rather than investing in compatibility workarounds for PhantomJS. Both are the replacement directions named in Selenium’s deprecation warning; the available evidence does not establish that one is universally faster or better for every application. Choose based on the browser engine your users need covered and the environment your CI can maintain.

Decision point What to verify
Browser engine Does the test need Chromium behavior, Firefox behavior, or coverage of both?
Current site compatibility Can the selected browser execute the site’s current JavaScript and negotiate its TLS configuration?
Selenium support Can your Selenium setup start and control the chosen browser and driver in local and CI environments?
Diagnostics Can the run preserve browser logs, screenshots, page source, and network evidence when it fails?
Wait behavior Can the test use an appropriate page-load strategy and explicit conditions for form readiness and authentication completion?
Migration effort Which selectors, capabilities, proxy settings, and authentication assumptions are specific to PhantomJS and need porting?

Port the test in stages: first keep its URL, selectors, and assertions while switching the driver; then repair browser-specific configuration; finally replace timing assumptions with explicit conditions. PhantomJS 2.1 was released on January 23, 2016, and the official download page lists version 2.1.1. That history is another reason not to treat a PhantomJS-only workaround as a durable answer for current login pages.

Or skip the browser setup

If the goal is to save a screenshot of a page rather than test an interactive sign-in flow, ScreenshotNeo can capture a page with one GET request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for Selenium when a test must enter credentials, submit a form, or verify the site’s authenticated behavior. Its consent-banner, newsletter-popup, and chat-widget cleanup is useful for clean captures, but those controls can matter when the purpose is to test the login experience itself.

For a page you are authorized to capture, here is the cURL call:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.

Common errors and what to do next

TimeoutException from driver.get()

Navigation did not reach the configured load condition within the limit. Save the current URL and page evidence, then inspect slow or failed resources. If the login DOM is usable despite a nonessential resource, handle that case intentionally; do not automatically count every timed-out navigation as a pass.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TimeoutException while waiting for a field

The field may not exist under that locator, may be inside a frame, may appear only after a redirect, or may never have rendered because of a JavaScript or network failure. Inspect the captured document and browser errors before changing the selector or extending the wait.

The submit button is not clickable

Confirm that the button is visible and enabled, and check whether an overlay or modal is blocking it. Wait for the actual condition needed by the test; clicking by JavaScript to bypass the page’s interaction state can conceal a genuine UI problem.

HTTPS works in a current browser but fails only in PhantomJS

Prioritize migrating the test. For a legacy reproduction, inspect TLS and certificate details, then check SSL library setup. Historical protocol flags should not become the standard configuration for current tests.

The test passes intermittently after adding a longer sleep

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this timeout-and-wait pattern apply only to login pages?

No. The same distinction between navigation completion and application readiness applies to any JavaScript-rendered page. Choose a condition that represents the next action or result your particular test needs.

Can a screenshot API verify that login succeeded?

A screenshot can show what a captured page rendered, but a screenshot API does not perform Selenium’s interactive form submission or replace assertions about an authenticated session. Use WebDriver for an end-to-end login test.
