There is no universal “best” quality preset: a setting that is sharp for a short invoice can be wasteful or unstable for a long, image-heavy report.
What each library does
jsPDF creates the PDF file and exposes the HTML integration. html2canvas renders the selected DOM content into a canvas that jsPDF can place in the PDF. When you pass an HTML string rather than an existing element, the HTML workflow may also require DOMPurify. Install jsPDF with npm or Yarn in a bundled project, and include the optional dependencies required by the build you use.
The HTML route is usually preferable to manually turning an entire page into one raster image because it gives you controls for page size, margins, automatic paging, image encoding, and output width. It is still a visual DOM capture: CSS support, cross-origin assets, responsive breakpoints, and complex layouts must be checked in your target browser.
A practical browser implementation
This example captures a report element, waits for images, chooses a predictable viewport, and saves a PDF. Replace the sample content with your own document.

The exact option names above are documented HTML and html2canvas controls. They are levers to evaluate, not a tested formula. Start with representative pages, inspect text and images at 100% zoom, and adjust one variable at a time.
Make the output sharper without making it unstable
Choose a rendering scale deliberately
html2canvas’s scale controls canvas resolution. Its documented default is the browser’s device pixel ratio. A higher value can preserve more detail in screenshots and small type, but it also creates more pixel data. Inference from that relationship: memory use, rendering time, and PDF size can rise with scale, especially for long pages or large images. There is no official universal optimum. Compare a normal page, the densest page, and an image-heavy page on the browsers you support.
Do not confuse resolution with missing assets. Increasing scale cannot repair an image that failed to load because of origin policy, a bad URL, or a timeout.
Set the viewport used by responsive CSS
windowWidth and windowHeight affect media queries and the layout html2canvas sees. Set them explicitly when a report must always use a desktop layout, or use values that match the intended print design. A narrow viewport can trigger mobile navigation, stacked cards, or shortened text and produce a different PDF than the screen the author reviewed.

Use useCORS: true when remote images send appropriate CORS headers. The proxy option can route image requests through a server you control when your architecture permits it. Set imageTimeout so one slow asset does not leave the capture waiting indefinitely. A cross-origin image without permission can taint the canvas; fix the server’s CORS response or use a properly configured proxy rather than disabling browser security protections.
For deterministic exports, serve assets from stable URLs, wait until images are complete, and provide dimensions in CSS so late loading does not shift the layout.
Prevent clipping and bad page breaks
Use margins and automatic paging together
jsPDF’s HTML options expose margin and autoPaging. Margins reserve printable space; automatic paging decides where rendered content moves to the next page. The available modes do not promise perfect breaks for every CSS layout. Tables, transformed elements, fixed-position children, and very tall blocks deserve special attention.

Design the HTML for pagination
- Keep headings with the paragraph or table that follows them where your CSS and layout permit.
- Avoid one enormous canvas section; split reports into logical blocks.
- Inspect content immediately before and after every page boundary.
- Give tables explicit column widths and test rows that wrap onto multiple lines.
- Remove fixed overlays, sticky headers, and interactive controls that have no place in a PDF.
Use the actual longest report, not only a short sample. Automatic paging is a layout aid, not a guarantee that every browser-rendered design will paginate like a word processor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteImage format, quality, and output size
The HTML options expose an image type (such as JPEG, PNG, or WebP) and a quality value. JPEG with a suitable quality value can reduce photographic output size; PNG preserves hard edges and transparency better; WebP availability and behavior should be verified in your chosen build and viewer. The project documentation does not establish a universally best combination.
Choose based on content: use a lossless format for diagrams, text-like graphics, and transparency; use JPEG for photographs when a small file matters. Then inspect fine lines, gradients, and text at normal reading size. Compression in the jsPDF constructor can further affect output size, but it cannot restore detail already lost during canvas rendering.
Keep text readable and Unicode-correct
jsPDF’s 14 standard PDF fonts are limited to the ASCII codepage. Accented characters, non-Latin scripts, emoji, and many symbols therefore require a TrueType font containing the needed glyphs. Integrate that TTF according to the project’s font workflow and test the exact languages and symbols your users enter.
A font that covers Latin-1 may still lack Arabic, Devanagari, CJK characters, or specialist symbols. Check copy/paste and search in a PDF viewer, not only the visual appearance. If selectable, searchable text is essential, remember that an html2canvas-based visual capture may not behave like text drawn directly with jsPDF APIs; evaluate the resulting file for your accessibility and extraction requirements.

Sanitize content and separate browser from server workflows
The jsPDF project strongly advises sanitizing user input before passing it to the library. Treat report data and any HTML string as untrusted. Escape or sanitize user-controlled markup, restrict URLs for images, and avoid injecting scripts into the export DOM.
Browser DOM capture and Node usage are different workflows. A browser has a real DOM, CSS engine, fonts, and network policy; a server-side package build does not automatically provide those things. Do not assume code that captures a browser element will run unchanged in Node. If you need server rendering, choose and configure a DOM/browser environment explicitly, then validate fonts, assets, and viewport behavior there.

Common failures and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Images are blank | CORS rejection, bad URL, or timeout | Confirm the request succeeds, enable useCORS, configure a permitted proxy, raise imageTimeout, and wait for image completion. |
| Export is blurry | Low canvas scale or oversized content compressed into too few pixels | Raise scale incrementally, set the intended viewport, and check memory and file size after each change. |
| Content is cut off | Paging, margins, or a fixed-height container do not match the content | Remove restrictive heights, set margins, try an autoPaging mode, and inspect boundary sections. |
| Mobile layout appears unexpectedly | Responsive media query matched the capture viewport | Set windowWidth and windowHeight explicitly and provide export-specific CSS. |
| Non-English text is missing or garbled | Selected font lacks the glyphs; standard fonts are ASCII-limited | Embed a TTF with the required coverage and test every script used. |
| Export hangs | Slow resources or an oversized canvas | Set timeouts, reduce unnecessary content, verify network requests, and tune scale and viewport. |
| Layout differs between machines | Different fonts, browser versions, device pixel ratios, or responsive widths | Load known fonts, fix viewport values, and generate in a controlled browser environment. |
Performance and reliability checklist
- Capture a short, a longest, and an image-heavy document before release.
- Record render time, browser memory symptoms, PDF size, and visual defects for your own content; the cited project material publishes no comparative benchmark.
- Keep scale, viewport, margins, image type, quality, and paging settings in configuration so they can be tuned without rewriting templates.
- Wait for fonts and images before calling
html(). - Use stable asset URLs and handle failures visibly instead of exporting silent blank regions.
- Test print, zoom, copy/search, and the scripts and symbols your users require.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a clean screenshot or PDF of a URL rather than a custom in-page report, ScreenshotNeo makes one GET request and handles the browser capture. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
See the parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. A direct PDF request can be adapted from this cURL example:

Which approach should you choose?
| Need | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Export a live application view with custom data, fonts, and export-only CSS | jsPDF HTML integration with html2canvas, tuned against representative documents. |
| Capture a public URL without building a browser worker | ScreenshotNeo’s screenshot or PDF endpoint. |
| Searchable text and precise text semantics are mandatory | Evaluate direct jsPDF text construction or another document-generation path; verify the produced PDF rather than assuming DOM capture preserves semantics. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does raising html2canvas scale guarantee a sharper PDF?
No. It increases canvas resolution, but the useful result depends on the viewport, source assets, layout, memory, and output encoding. Tune it against representative pages.
Why do cross-origin images fail even when they load in the browser?
A browser may display an image while preventing canvas readback. The image server must allow the requesting origin, or you must use a correctly configured proxy; useCORS alone cannot grant permission.
Can jsPDF HTML output preserve every CSS feature?
No guarantee is stated. It is a browser-rendered visual capture, so test complex positioning, transforms, tables, filters, and responsive rules in the browsers and content you support.
What is the safest way to support multilingual reports?
Embed a TrueType font that contains every required glyph, then test the actual scripts, symbols, copy/search behavior, and PDF viewers used by your audience.
