The usual fix is to identify which layer is failing. First compare the live page with the canvas. If the icon is missing on the live page, repair the Font Awesome version, plan, subset, CSS, or font-file setup. If it appears live but disappears in the canvas, isolate the element, wait for the actual font assets, and check whether the icon depends on a pseudo-element or cross-origin resource.

Firefox is a supported browser for html2canvas, and Font Awesome supports recent Firefox and Gecko releases. Support does not mean that every CSS property, web-font path, or pseudo-element will be reconstructed identically. html2canvas rebuilds a representation from the DOM and computed styles; it is not a native browser screenshot API.

Why Font Awesome can vanish from an html2canvas capture

html2canvas reads the document and paints the parts of the DOM and CSS that it understands. It does not copy the browser’s already-rasterized pixels. Font Awesome Web Fonts + CSS commonly insert an icon through a ::before or ::after pseudo-element, with the glyph selected by a CSS content value and a loaded font face. If any part of that chain is absent, delayed, cross-origin, or not reproduced by html2canvas, the canvas can show an empty space while Firefox displays the icon normally.

The project lists Firefox among supported modern browsers in its getting-started documentation. Its FAQ also warns that CSS properties may be missing or incomplete. Therefore, treat this as a rendering-path diagnosis, not proof that Firefox itself is unsupported.

Start with the live-page versus canvas test

  1. Inspect the live page. Confirm that the expected icon is visible before calling html2canvas.
  2. Capture only the smallest affected element. A minimal reproduction separates an icon problem from layout, clipping, transforms, or an oversized page.
  3. Compare the two results. If the icon is absent in both, troubleshoot Font Awesome. If it is present live but absent only in the canvas, investigate html2canvas’s CSS, font timing, and resource limitations.

Save the exact Font Awesome package or Kit version, the html2canvas version, the browser version, and the capture code while testing. A fix that works for one combination is not evidence of a universal Firefox defect.

If the icon is missing on the live page

Confirm the icon exists in the loaded release

Check the icon name against the Font Awesome version actually delivered to the browser. An icon may have moved, changed style, or be unavailable in the selected release. The Font Awesome web troubleshooting guide is the authoritative checklist for these setup failures.

Check the plan and style

Verify that the project is using the intended Free, Pro, or Pro+ package and that the requested style is included. A Pro class used with only Free assets can render as a blank area rather than an obvious JavaScript error.

Check Kit subsetting

If the site uses a Font Awesome Kit with a subset, make sure the icon is included in that subset. Test with a non-subsetted development configuration or add the icon explicitly, then reload Firefox with the network panel open.

Verify CSS and font requests

In Firefox Developer Tools, inspect the element and check that the expected Font Awesome CSS is loaded. In the Network panel, look for the font files and inspect the Console for stylesheet, font decoding, MIME-type, or permission errors. Until the live page displays the glyph reliably, changing html2canvas options cannot solve the underlying setup problem.

If the live page is correct but the canvas is not

Reduce the reproduction

Capture a small element containing one icon and its label. Remove unrelated animations, transforms, filters, and framework components. Record whether the icon is created by a pseudo-element, an inline SVG, or an ordinary text node. This tells you whether the failure follows the icon implementation or the surrounding page.

Inspect pseudo-elements and generated content

Web Fonts + CSS often place the glyph in ::before or ::after. html2canvas may not reproduce every generated-content or font-related CSS detail. Do not assume that adding a random Unicode character or changing the color is a reliable fix; first verify the actual computed content, font family, weight, and style in Firefox.

If the property is missing or incomplete, the html2canvas FAQ says: “If a property is missing or incomplete, create a test case and open an issue.” Keep the reduced example when reporting the problem so maintainers can reproduce it.

Wait for the real font assets

Run the capture only after the page has finished loading the Font Awesome font. A page can show a fallback glyph briefly and then switch to the web font; capturing during that interval can produce an empty or incorrect icon. Waiting is a diagnostic experiment, not a guaranteed Firefox fix.

import html2canvas from 'html2canvas';

async function captureCard() {
  const target = document.querySelector('.card');
  if (!target) throw new Error('Missing .card element');

  if (document.fonts) {
    await document.fonts.ready;
    const pendingFonts = Array.from(document.fonts).map(font =>
      font.status === 'loaded' ? Promise.resolve() : font.loaded.catch(() => undefined)
    );
    await Promise.all(pendingFonts);
  }

  const canvas = await html2canvas(target, {
    backgroundColor: '#ffffff',
    useCORS: true
  });

  const link = document.createElement('a');
  link.download = 'card.png';
  link.href = canvas.toDataURL('image/png');
  link.click();
}

captureCard().catch(console.error);

Use the version of html2canvas installed by the project and test this sequence in the Firefox version that shows the failure. A historical 2019 report discusses font-loading symptoms across multiple browsers and an older release; it does not establish a current Firefox-only defect or a universal timing remedy. See issue 1940 for that historical context.

Establish whether a cross-origin resource is involved

Inspect the Console and Network panel for the actual icon-related resource. If a font, stylesheet, image, or other dependency comes from another origin, the server must permit the browser request, or a suitable proxy may be required. html2canvas documents these restrictions in its getting-started guide. Do not use cross-origin settings as the default diagnosis for a web-font icon; first prove that the relevant resource is cross-origin and that Firefox reports a permission failure.

Test the two Font Awesome integration models

Font Awesome documents both Web Fonts + CSS and SVG + JavaScript. Neither is established as universally superior for html2canvas in Firefox. Compare them in the same minimal page, with the same icon and capture timing.

Question Web Fonts + CSS SVG + JavaScript
How is the icon inserted? Often through a CSS pseudo-element and a glyph in a Font Awesome font. An SVG element is inserted into the document.
What must be present? Correct icon class, loaded CSS, matching font files, style, plan, and any Kit subset. SVG + JS assets, the icon definition, and markup that can accommodate the generated SVG.
What should you inspect? Computed content, font family and weight, font requests, and CSS errors. The generated SVG element, its dimensions, fills, viewBox, and loaded JavaScript assets.
How should you choose? Keep it when the minimal html2canvas reproduction captures it correctly. Test it as an alternative when the current pseudo-element path cannot be reproduced reliably.

The comparison is about your capture workflow, not a promise that switching implementations fixes every case. See Font Awesome’s Web Fonts versus SVG guide for the documented requirements of each approach.

A repeatable Firefox diagnostic procedure

  1. Open a clean profile or private window. This rules out extensions that replace fonts, inject styles, or alter page content.
  2. Check the live icon. Inspect the element, computed styles, and the exact Font Awesome assets requested.
  3. Capture one icon. Remove the rest of the page until the failure is reproducible with a small target.
  4. Capture after fonts settle. Use the document.fonts sequence shown above and compare an immediate capture with a delayed capture.
  5. Test implementation paths. If the project permits it, create one Web Fonts + CSS case and one SVG + JS case using the same icon.
  6. Record versions and output. Keep the Firefox, Font Awesome, html2canvas, operating-system, and device-pixel-ratio details with each result.
  7. Report a real reproduction. If a supported CSS property still disappears, reduce it to a public or shareable test case and follow the html2canvas FAQ’s issue-reporting advice.

Common symptoms, causes, and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Next action
No icon on the page or canvas Wrong icon name, unavailable style or plan, missing Kit subset, or failed CSS/font request. Follow Font Awesome’s troubleshooting checklist and repair the live page first.
Icon visible live, blank in canvas Generated content, unsupported CSS detail, or a font that was not ready at capture time. Capture a minimal element, inspect pseudo-element styles, wait for fonts, and test SVG + JS.
Only production fails Different asset URLs, cache headers, subsetting, deployment timing, or cross-origin permissions. Compare production Network and Console logs with the working environment.
Image or canvas becomes tainted A cross-origin resource was fetched without the required server permission. Confirm the offending request, configure the server or an appropriate proxy, and retest.
Intermittent missing icons Capture starts while CSS or font requests are still pending. Gate capture on the real font-loading sequence; do not rely on a fixed delay alone.
Changing a setting has no effect The failure is in Font Awesome setup rather than html2canvas rendering. Return to the live-page test and verify version, style, subset, and asset delivery.

Performance and reliability considerations

Large full-page captures require more DOM traversal and memory than a single component. Debug with the smallest target, then expand gradually. Remove unnecessary animated content during capture and avoid starting several large captures at once. A successful canvas is not automatically pixel-perfect: html2canvas can omit or approximate CSS it does not implement, even when Firefox renders the live page correctly.

For repeatable builds, pin the html2canvas and Font Awesome versions, keep a minimal regression page with one representative icon from every style you use, and run it in the Firefox versions your users actually receive. Font Awesome’s browser-support documentation states that it supports Firefox and many Firefox-based Gecko browsers for the last two major and ESR versions, but that vendor statement can change; verify the current support page when setting your test matrix: browser support.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a server-side screenshot rather than a canvas generated inside the page, ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Because it captures the rendered page in its own browser, it can avoid shipping html2canvas and its DOM/CSS reconstruction into your application. It is an alternative, not a claim that every Font Awesome/html2canvas defect has a single fix.

FAQ

Does Firefox need a special html2canvas fork?

No supported documentation establishes that requirement. Firefox is listed as supported; diagnose the specific icon path, assets, CSS, and versions before changing libraries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I fix the problem by converting every icon to a Unicode character?

Not safely. The displayed glyph depends on the loaded Font Awesome font and style. Use a minimal test to determine whether the current pseudo-element path is the failing part, then compare the documented SVG approach if appropriate.

What information should an issue report contain?

Include a reduced page, the exact icon and style, Font Awesome and html2canvas versions, Firefox version, asset-loading results, and the generated canvas alongside the live rendering. That lets maintainers evaluate a missing or incomplete CSS property instead of guessing from a full application.
