Verdict: Don’t install the legacy Android ES File Explorer from an APK mirror. Its former feature set was impressive, but a documented network exposure, a history of distribution and trust concerns, and the lack of a clearly verified current Google Play listing make it a poor recommendation in 2026. An ES File Explorer app is listed for iPhone and iPad, but that listing is not proof it is the same product Android users remember. For Android, choose a maintained file manager from an official store; for iOS, assess the current listing on its own merits.

Which ES File Explorer are you looking at?

The name now refers to several things that should not be treated as one continuous product:

  • Legacy Android ES File Explorer: The well-known Android file manager, remembered for local file operations, archive tools, network and cloud access, media features, and advanced options.
  • The current iOS listing: An iPhone and iPad app using the ES File Explorer name, published by Beijing Xiaoxiong Bowang Technology Co., Ltd. The listing does not establish that it is the same Android product or developer identity.
  • Unofficial APKs and lookalikes: Old APK copies, modified packages, and similarly named apps may appear in searches. A familiar name or icon does not prove that an app is official, authentic, or safe.
  • EX File Manager: A separate Google Play app from ESTRONGS LIMITED. It is not evidence that the original ES File Explorer has returned. See its Google Play listing.

Is ES File Explorer still available?

Android

The legacy Android app was not found as a clearly verified, current Google Play listing in the results reviewed for this article. That is not proof that no copy exists anywhere; it means a similarly named listing or APK download is not enough to establish that the original app is available through an official, maintained channel.

Google says Play Protect scans apps during installation and can flag apps built for older Android versions that lack newer privacy protections. That check is useful, but it does not make an old or unofficial APK a responsible choice. Google’s Play Protect guidance explains the scanning and older-app warning.

ES File Explorer File Manager

iPhone and iPad

A U.S. App Store listing is available. It requires iOS 13.0 or later; the listing also names support for iPad, Apple Watch, Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 13 or later, and Apple Vision. It shows a 276 MB download size and a 16+ age rating. These are listing details, which can change and may differ by storefront. Check the current App Store listing.

The listing shows version 2.7.6 dated October 18, 2024. A listed app and version number do not, by themselves, demonstrate recent maintenance, security quality, or continuity with the old Android app. Availability is not the same as a security audit.

What the classic Android app did well

ES File Explorer earned its popularity by combining jobs that were often split across several Android utilities. At its best, it was a highly configurable control panel for files rather than a basic folder viewer.

Android File Manager
  • Android File Mananger is free for ever;
  • only 500K,but has very useful functions
  • rich file icons.
  • quick thumbnails for images and videos.
  • file browser
  • Everyday file work: Create, rename, copy, move, delete, search, and sort files and folders.
  • Archives and documents: Work with compressed files and view common media or documents inside the app.
  • Network and cloud access: Connect to network shares and online storage instead of switching between separate clients.
  • Transfers: Move files over Wi-Fi between a phone and a computer or another device.
  • Advanced Android features: Older versions offered app or APK management and backup tools; some functions, including root-level operations, depended on the device being rooted.

Those are historical strengths, not a promise that each feature exists in the current iOS app or will work in a legacy Android build today. Modern Android storage restrictions and changed cloud authentication can also make an old feature set behave differently from how it did years ago.

Why the legacy Android app is difficult to recommend

A documented local-network exposure

Independent security research documented a local service associated with ES File Explorer on port 59777. The report described how files and other device information could be exposed to another party on the same network through that service. This is a concrete historical security finding; it is not proof that every version or installation was malware, nor does it establish the current behavior of the iOS app. Read the security report.

Removal claims need careful wording

The same security report said the app was removed from Google Play in connection with click-fraud concerns. Click fraud and a security vulnerability are different issues, and neither should be casually rewritten as “Google banned it for malware.” A removal can have policy, developer, ownership, or compliance context; the available source does not justify a broader claim about Google’s official rationale.

Privacy disclosures for the iOS listing

The current iOS listing says the app may collect or use identifiers, usage data, diagnostics, device-related data, and location-related information; it also describes tracking and analytics practices. Apple says the privacy information is provided by the developer and is not verified by Apple. What data is involved can depend on the features used, settings, region, and operating system. These disclosures apply to the listed iOS app; they should not be presented as proof of what the historic Android app currently does.

Third-party APK integrity is uncertain

The publisher’s installation agreement warns that versions downloaded from third-party websites or media may contain viruses, Trojans, or other malicious code. That warning does not mean every APK copy is infected. It does mean that a download from a mirror is not automatically trustworthy, and an authentic APK can still be outdated, vulnerable, unsupported, or incompatible with current Android storage behavior. Read the publisher’s installation agreement.

What the current iOS app offers—and what remains unclear

The App Store description advertises local and LAN file management, Wi-Fi and device-to-device transfer, ZIP/RAR/7Z compression, cloud integrations, media playback, SMB, FTP and WebDAV access, PDF editing, and a code editor. Those are advertised features, not independently verified test results.

  • Has rich file icons, Free forever

The listing identifies Beijing Xiaoxiong Bowang Technology Co., Ltd. as the seller, while the associated terms page references DAPP GLOBAL LIMITED and DU Apps Studio. These names are displayed in the sources; their appearance alone does not establish ownership or a relationship to the historic Android product.

The listing shows ES Pro at $6.99 per month and $29.99 per year, along with lifetime and ad-removal purchase entries. These are prices shown on the U.S. listing at the time reviewed; storefront, region, and date can change prices and available purchases. If considering the app, check the current in-app purchase terms before subscribing.

iOS sandboxing and file-provider access differ from Android’s file system. So even where the feature names overlap, the current iOS app should be judged as an iOS utility—not assumed to reproduce Android root access, APK management, or the old app’s exact workflow.

Should you download an old ES APK?

No, not as a general recommendation. An APK can be an authentic old release and still be an unsafe or impractical install today. A copy from an unofficial mirror adds the separate risk that the file has been altered or repackaged.

  • Integrity: It can be hard to prove that a mirror’s file is an unmodified release from the original developer.
  • Security and maintenance: Old code may lack fixes, and an abandoned app has no dependable update path.
  • Network behavior: The historical port 59777 finding makes it especially unwise to grant an unknown or old build access to sensitive files and networks.
  • Permissions and compatibility: Older apps may request broad access and may not work correctly with current Android storage rules.
  • Connected accounts: Legacy cloud integrations may rely on outdated authentication or stop working.

If ES File Explorer is already installed

  1. Back up important files using a trusted file manager or your device’s standard backup method.
  2. Disconnect unnecessary network access while you decide what to do, especially if the app is an old or sideloaded copy.
  3. Uninstall the app if you do not need it. Do not delete random system folders as a precaution.
  4. Run Google Play Protect and review Android’s installed-app permissions, accessibility access, and device-administrator settings for anything you do not recognize.
  5. Change passwords if the app handled sensitive credentials or you observed suspicious account activity; otherwise, a password reset is not automatically required.
  6. Install a maintained file manager from Google Play or another clearly official distribution channel.

Which alternatives fit the old ES workflow?

No single replacement is best for everyone. Start with the task you need—basic local browsing, dual-pane file work, network protocols, or advanced customization—then check the live store listing for current compatibility, permissions, privacy disclosures, and purchase terms.

App Best fit What the cited listing establishes Trade-off
Files by Google Basic browsing, sharing, and storage management Google’s Play listing is the official install page; its current feature and privacy details should be checked there. Better suited to straightforward use than root access, deep network administration, or extensive customization.
Solid Explorer A broad, modern Android file-manager workflow The listing advertises dual panes, cloud connections, SMB, SFTP, FTP, encryption, web sharing, batch renaming, and FTP server functionality. It contains ads and in-app purchases; the listing reviewed showed an update dated July 8, 2026. More feature-rich than a basic browser. The listing and user feedback are not a guarantee of bug-free performance.
MiXplorer Silver Advanced users who want customization and protocol breadth The listing describes tabs, dual-pane landscape mode, archive tools, SMB, FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, cloud integrations, servers, editing, root access, and encryption-related capabilities. The Play package was listed at $5.99 when reviewed; price may vary or change. Its depth can be daunting for casual users; the Silver Play Store package uses Play Store license verification.
Explorer by Speed Software A conventional browser with tabs and bookmarks The listing highlights Google Drive, Box, Dropbox, SMB, ZIP/TAR creation and extraction, and tabbed navigation. The developer lists Root Explorer as a separate paid product. The interface may feel more traditional than newer dual-pane file managers.
Cx File Explorer A straightforward local, cloud, or network file-manager option to evaluate It appears in Google Play’s current file-manager collection. Check its live listing for feature, compatibility, and privacy details. The cited material does not establish current feature specifics or pricing, so verify the listing against your needs.
Fossify File Manager Readers seeking a simpler, privacy-oriented option The project site is the place to verify official distribution and maintenance. Claims that it is free and open source appear in user comparisons, not primary documentation cited here. Confirm the official source and current maintenance before installing; do not rely on user comments as a security audit.
ES File Explorer for iOS iPhone or iPad users considering the current listing The U.S. App Store page advertises local, network, cloud, archive, transfer, media, PDF, and code features and provides the developer’s privacy disclosures. It is not established as the same product as legacy Android ES File Explorer; assess its data disclosures and purchase terms independently.

Match the replacement to your priority

  • Just browse files and free up storage: Start with Files by Google or evaluate Cx File Explorer.
  • Want an ES-like power-user setup: Compare Solid Explorer’s dual-pane workflow and network options with the features you actually use.
  • Need extensive protocols or customization: MiXplorer Silver is the more technical direction, not necessarily the easiest one.
  • Prefer conventional tabs and bookmarks: Try Explorer by Speed Software.
  • Prioritize a simpler privacy-oriented approach: Verify Fossify’s official distribution and maintenance status before relying on it.

Paid or popular does not automatically mean safer. For any replacement, use an official store or developer site, review its update history and requested access, and avoid granting network or file permissions that are not needed for your workflow.

Final verdict

ES File Explorer remains notable for how much it once put in an Android file manager, but that history is not a current safety or maintenance signal. Avoid installing the legacy Android app from APK mirrors. Choose a maintained Android alternative from an official source, or evaluate the current iOS listing separately using its own privacy disclosures, compatibility, and purchase terms.
