You can install Flatpak on a compatible Chromebook through ChromeOS’s Linux development environment (Crostini). Flatpak runs inside its Debian-based Linux container—not directly in ChromeOS. Set up Linux, install Flatpak with APT, add Flathub, restart Linux, then install an app using the exact ID on its Flathub page.

Check compatibility and prepare your Chromebook

Your Chromebook must support the Linux development environment. Support varies by device, and a school- or work-managed Chromebook may have Linux disabled by an administrator. Check Google’s supported-device list; if the device is managed, ask its administrator. Update ChromeOS before troubleshooting setup. Google says enabling Linux can take 10 minutes or more, depending on the device and connection (Google Chromebook Help).

  • Allow time for setup and have a reliable internet connection.
  • Make sure there is enough local storage for the Linux container, Flatpak applications, runtimes, and their data. Runtimes can add substantial space, even when applications share them.
  • Consider the app’s CPU, memory, and hardware requirements. Some apps support only certain processor architectures; an ARM Chromebook may have fewer compatible choices than an x86-64 model.

Developer Mode is not normally required for Crostini; ChromeOS’s Linux setup is separate from it (Chromium Crostini guidance).

Enable the Linux development environment

  1. Select the time in the lower-right corner, then open Settings.
  2. Go to About ChromeOS and select Developers.
  3. Beside Linux development environment, select Set up, then follow the prompts.
  4. Wait for the Terminal window to open.

ChromeOS labels and menu hierarchy can vary between releases. If you cannot find the option, open chrome://os-settings and look for Linux settings. The setup creates a Debian-based Linux environment that uses APT for system packages (Google Chromebook Help).

Update Linux and install Flatpak

In Terminal, refresh Debian’s package information and apply available upgrades:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

apt-get update refreshes the package index; dist-upgrade applies available package upgrades. Updating first is a sensible preparation, though a full upgrade is not a special Flatpak requirement. Google recommends updating Linux packages when Linux apps have problems (Google’s Linux setup guidance).

Install Flatpak:

sudo apt install flatpak

APT may ask you to confirm the installation and then download Flatpak and its dependencies. When the prompt returns, check that it is available:

flatpak --version

The version depends on the Debian environment and ChromeOS release; there is no single version number that applies to every Chromebook.

Add Flathub and restart Linux

Flathub is the repository most users will use for Flatpak apps. Add it for your Linux user:

flatpak --user remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

--user keeps the repository in your user’s Flatpak configuration instead of making it system-wide. remote-add adds a repository, --if-not-exists makes the command safe to repeat when Flathub is already configured, and flathub is the local name for the remote. This is Flathub’s ChromeOS-specific setup approach (Flathub ChromeOS setup).

Confirm that the remote is listed:

flatpak remotes --user

The output should include flathub. Then restart the Linux environment as Flathub instructs: right-click the Terminal icon on the shelf, choose Shut down Linux, and reopen Terminal from the Launcher. This restarts the Linux container; it does not reset the Chromebook.

Find and install an app

Search Flathub in a browser, open the app’s official Flathub page, and copy its application ID. You can also search from Terminal:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
flatpak search KEYWORD

Install the app by replacing APP_ID with that exact ID:

flatpak --user install flathub APP_ID

For example, Flathub lists Firefox as org.mozilla.firefox:

flatpak --user install flathub org.mozilla.firefox

This example shows the command format, not a guarantee that every app will work well on every Chromebook. Before installing, check the app’s publisher, maintenance status, supported architecture, permissions, branch (stable or beta), and hardware requirements. An app that depends on a camera, advanced graphics, or specialized USB access may not work in Crostini.

Launch, update, and remove apps

Launch an app

Run it from Terminal using its application ID:

flatpak run APP_ID

For the Firefox example:

flatpak run org.mozilla.firefox

Linux graphical apps can also appear in the ChromeOS Launcher alongside other apps (Google ChromeOS app development). If a newly installed app is not listed, close and reopen the Launcher or restart Linux. Check the installation with flatpak list --app.

Update Flatpak apps

flatpak --user update

This updates user-installed Flatpak apps and their runtimes. It does not update Debian packages. Update those separately with:

sudo apt update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Uninstall an app

Check the ID before removing an app:

flatpak --user uninstall APP_ID

To remove unused runtimes and dependencies after uninstalling apps:

flatpak --user uninstall --unused

Useful commands for checking what is installed and diagnosing a problem include:

flatpak --user list
flatpak list --app
flatpak remotes --user
flatpak info APP_ID

flatpak --user repair is a recovery command, not part of routine setup; use it only when you have a specific installation problem to address.

Know the limits before choosing an app

Flatpak is inside Crostini, not the ChromeOS host

ChromeOS runs the Linux development environment in a container, and Flatpak runs inside that environment. This makes Linux desktop apps possible, but does not turn them into Android apps or run Windows .exe files. Crostini’s hardware and desktop integration limits still apply.

Hardware features and performance vary

Google’s Chromebook Help currently lists cameras, Android emulators, GPU hardware acceleration, and video decode as unsupported in the Linux environment (Google Chromebook Help). These limitations can affect webcam apps, video editors, games, 3D or CAD software, scientific visualization, Android development, and other graphics-heavy or hardware-dependent tools. Support can change with ChromeOS releases, and app requirements differ, so check the specific app rather than assuming that a successful installation means it will be usable.

Processor architecture matters too: check whether the Flathub app offers a build for your Chromebook’s architecture. An app may be absent for that architecture or perform differently on ARM and x86-64 devices.

Understand file access and permissions

Flatpak’s app permissions and ChromeOS’s Linux-container security are separate layers. Google says Linux apps share the Linux sandbox with one another, even though that environment is separated from the rest of the Chromebook. Files and folders shared with Linux are available to Linux apps (Google Chromebook Help). Review an app’s permissions on Flathub, and share only the ChromeOS folders it needs rather than broad or sensitive folders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To give a Linux app access to a ChromeOS folder, open Files, right-click that folder, and choose Share with Linux. Then retry the app. ChromeOS’s Linux integration provides shared folders between the host and container (Google ChromeOS app development).

Account for storage and backups

Flatpak apps and runtimes take space inside the Linux environment. ChromeOS provides Linux storage and backup controls; the path is generally Settings → Advanced → Developers → Linux → Back up and restore, though labels can differ by release. Backups may need considerable free disk space, and Google says restoring a Linux backup to another Chromebook requires the same architecture, such as x86 or ARM (Google Chromebook Help: Linux backup and restore). Removing the Linux development environment removes its container, Flatpak apps, and Linux data, so back up first if you intend to remove or replace it.

Troubleshoot common problems

Linux setup is missing

Update ChromeOS and restart the Chromebook, then check Settings → About ChromeOS → Developers. The device may not support Linux, or an administrator may have disabled it. Check the supported-device list; on a managed Chromebook, ask the school or employer’s administrator. Google also describes Linux setup and its device requirements in Chromebook Help.

Terminal says flatpak: command not found

Make sure you are in the Linux Terminal app, not Crosh, and that Linux setup has completed. Then run:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install flatpak
flatpak --version

If APT cannot locate the package, refresh its package index, confirm the container is online, and restart Linux before trying again.

Flathub is already configured or cannot be found

The --if-not-exists option prevents an error when the Flathub remote is already present. Inspect the user-level remotes with:

flatpak remotes --user

Keep the setup commands consistent: because this guide adds a user-level remote, use flatpak --user install, flatpak --user update, and flatpak --user uninstall. Avoid switching casually to sudo flatpak, which may create a separate system-wide configuration.

Search returns no match

Check for a typo, confirm the app is on Flathub, and copy the application ID from its Flathub page rather than guessing. The app may have been renamed, removed, moved to another branch, or may not support your Chromebook’s architecture. Try searching by a broader term with flatpak search KEYWORD.

The app installs but will not start

Check that it is installed and inspect its Flatpak information:

flatpak list --app
flatpak info APP_ID
flatpak run APP_ID

A missing or incompatible runtime, unsupported architecture, limited memory or storage, an application bug, or a requirement for GPU acceleration, camera access, or specialized hardware can prevent it from launching. Restart Linux if the app has just been installed; if it still fails, check the app’s own support information and requirements.

The app cannot open a ChromeOS file

Linux apps can access Linux files, but a ChromeOS folder may need to be shared explicitly. In Files, right-click only the needed folder, select Share with Linux, and try again. Do not share more data than the app requires.

Graphics are slow, or the app looks wrong

Some Linux apps assume a full desktop environment or depend on graphics acceleration, which Google lists as unsupported in its current Chromebook Linux help. A Debian package or Android version may be a better fit if one is available. Avoid changing experimental ChromeOS settings as a first troubleshooting step.

When to choose something other than Flatpak

Option Consider it when Trade-off
ChromeOS web app The service works well in a browser and you want to avoid maintaining a Linux app. It may not provide the features or offline support of a desktop application.
Android app A polished Play Store version has the mobile, touch, camera, or Android integration you need. It is an Android app, not a Linux desktop app, and may differ in features.
APT package The app is in Debian’s repositories, disk space is tight, or system integration matters. Its repository version may be older, and system packages have different dependency and permission characteristics.
Developer-provided .deb The developer explicitly supports Debian or ChromeOS Linux and provides a Debian package. Not every .deb is compatible with a Chromebook’s Linux environment. ChromeOS supports some .deb installs (ChromeOS Linux setup).

Flatpak is useful when the Linux app you want is available on Flathub and fits Crostini’s hardware and storage limits. If it depends on a feature Crostini does not provide, a web, Android, or Debian option may be more practical.
