If Discord stays on “RTC Connecting,” it has not completed the connection to the voice server. Check Discord’s status first, then test a different network—ideally a phone hotspot. Those two checks help distinguish a Discord outage from a problem with your app, VPN, firewall, router, or network policy.
What “RTC Connecting” means
Discord can show the voice interface without completing the connection needed to join the voice server. That is different from joining successfully but being unable to hear or transmit audio: a microphone or speaker setting is not usually the first thing to investigate when the client remains on “RTC Connecting.”
Discord voice sends and receives audio over UDP. A firewall, restrictive network, VPN, router, or ISP route that interferes with that traffic can prevent the connection even when text chat and websites work. Discord describes “RTC Connecting” as one of several voice connection errors, not a diagnosis of one specific cause. Start with the quickest diagnostic checks
1. Check whether Discord is having an outage
Look at Discord Status, especially the voice-related services. If Discord reports a voice incident, changing your computer or router settings is unlikely to help; wait for the service to recover and check the status page again.

If status is normal, note the scope of the problem: whether text works, whether every voice channel or only one is affected, whether other people have the same issue, and whether it began after a network, VPN, or security-software change. Discord recommends checking its status page when voice connection errors persist.
2. Fully quit and reopen Discord
Closing the visible window may leave Discord running. Quit the app completely, then reopen it and try voice again. Discord recommends a full exit rather than simply closing the window.
- Windows: Leave the channel, right-click Discord in the system tray and choose Quit Discord if that option is available. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, end any remaining Discord processes, and relaunch the app.
- macOS: With Discord active, press Command + Q, or choose Discord > Quit Discord. Reopen Discord; if it remains stuck, restart the Mac.
3. Test a different network
Connect your computer to a phone hotspot and try the same voice channel. This is a diagnostic test, not a permanent recommendation to use mobile data.

Discord’s general troubleshooting guide also recommends trying another network. A hotspot test is particularly useful because it changes the network path without requiring you to alter router settings.

Check VPNs, firewalls, and managed networks
Disconnect or reconfigure a VPN or proxy
Disconnect your VPN completely, quit and reopen Discord, and test voice. Discord says VPNs must support UDP for voice. If voice works with the VPN disconnected, try a different VPN server or a UDP-capable protocol; if available, test with the VPN’s traffic-blocking or kill-switch options adjusted, or use split tunneling to exclude Discord where appropriate.
A VPN can sometimes help if a route or network restriction is the problem, but it can also add latency, packet loss, or UDP filtering. Treat it as a diagnostic variable, not a guaranteed fix. Do not buy a VPN just because Discord shows this message.
Allow Discord through security software
Allowlist Discord rather than leaving firewall or antivirus protection disabled. On Windows, open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall and check that Discord is permitted on the network type you use. If Discord is missing, adding the current official client or reinstalling it may recreate its firewall rule.
For third-party security software, check application control, web protection, outbound traffic filtering, ransomware protection, and gaming or network modules. You can briefly pause a protection feature to test whether it is responsible, but turn it back on immediately. If the test confirms interference, create an exception for Discord instead.

Check school, work, and public Wi-Fi restrictions
A managed network can allow websites and Discord text chat while restricting voice traffic. Try a personal hotspot to confirm whether the restriction is network-specific. If it is a school, workplace, or public network, ask its administrator whether Discord voice is permitted and use only approved access methods; do not bypass a policy without permission.
If the problem affects one server or channel
When other voice channels work but one does not—or several people in the same channel are affected—ask a server administrator to test another voice region. A member may not have permission to change this setting.
- Open the affected voice channel’s settings.
- Go to Overview and find Region Override.
- Select another available region temporarily, save, and test the channel.
Discord also notes that voice-region changes are available for private voice calls. Menu names and available regions can change, and a region test will not repair a local VPN or firewall problem. Discord’s voice connection guidance describes region changes as an option for administrators.
Try DNS only when the evidence points to it
DNS resolves service names to network addresses; it does not itself make a blocked UDP path work. Try a different DNS resolver when name lookups are inconsistent, the problem appears limited to one network, or the ISP’s DNS service seems unreliable. Record your existing DNS settings before changing them, and consider the privacy and policy implications of the resolver you choose.

On Windows, you can flush the local DNS cache from Command Prompt with:
ipconfig /flushdns
Then reopen Discord and test again. Discord’s troubleshooting guide includes changing DNS among its possible connection remedies, but DNS flushing is a diagnostic step—not a universal RTC fix.
Reset Discord settings and local cache
Reset Voice & Video settings
If the problem began after a voice setting change, use User Settings > Voice & Video > Debugging > Reset Voice and Video Settings. If you do not see the Debugging section, look within Voice & Video; the control’s placement can change between app versions. This reset is aimed at audio configuration, so it is less likely to help a network-wide UDP block. Discord documents it in its voice and video troubleshooting guide.
Clear the cache
Quit Discord before deleting cache contents. Remove the contents of the cache folder, not the whole Discord profile or configuration directory:

Discord’s general troubleshooting guide lists cache clearing as a remedy. Avoid deleting broader app data unless you understand that it may remove local settings or require signing in again.

- Update Discord, then refresh the client with Ctrl + R on Windows or Command + R on macOS.
- Try Discord in a supported browser. If the browser works while the desktop app fails, investigate the app’s firewall rule, cache, modifications or overlays, and installation before changing the router.
- If both browser and app fail only on one network, focus on the router, ISP, VPN, firewall, DNS, or network policy.
- Reinstall only after these simpler comparisons. Download the desktop client from Discord’s official site. A Beta, PTB, or Canary build can be a diagnostic comparison, but is not the default permanent fix.
These are among the escalation options in Discord’s voice and video troubleshooting guide. On mobile, update the Discord app and operating system, then test both Wi-Fi and mobile data; that comparison can show whether the issue follows the device or the network.

When to contact an administrator, ISP, or Discord Support
- Network administrator: A hotspot works but school, work, or public Wi-Fi does not.
- ISP or router support: The problem follows your home network across clients, while a hotspot works.
- Server administrator: Only one server or channel is affected, or multiple members report the same issue.
- Discord Support: The issue persists across networks and clients after checking status and completing the relevant local tests.
For an unresolved report, Discord’s voice-error guidance asks users to provide a console screenshot. Reproduce the problem, open Developer Tools with Ctrl + Shift + I on Windows or Option + Command + I on macOS, and select Console. Include your operating system and version, whether you use the app or browser, whether one or all servers are affected, whether a hotspot works, relevant VPN or security software details, and when the problem began. Send the information through Discord Support, and redact account credentials, tokens, and private information from any logs or screenshots. See Discord’s instructions for voice connection errors.
