For most Chromebook owners, the simplest way to install regular Minecraft is through the Google Play Store: search for Minecraft and install it if the listing says it is compatible with your device. Java Edition and Minecraft Education use different installation routes, and not every Chromebook supports all three. Use the guide below to choose the right edition before you download anything.
Choose the right Minecraft edition
| What you want | Use this version | How it installs |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Minecraft with the simplest Chromebook setup | Bedrock / Chromebook version | Google Play Store, if your device supports the app |
| Classroom lessons, coding activities, or school tools | Minecraft Education | Google Play Store; a school may deploy it through managed Google Play |
| Java servers, Java mods, or Java-specific features | Java Edition | Official Debian-based launcher in ChromeOS Linux; performance varies |
Minecraft identifies Chromebook as a supported Bedrock platform on its official Minecraft platform and purchase page. That does not mean every Chromebook can install or run it: Play Store availability and compatibility depend on the device and its settings.

Check your Chromebook before installing
- Check for the Play Store: Only some Chromebooks support Android apps. A school or work administrator can also block the Play Store or specific apps. Google explains Android app availability and managed-device restrictions in its Chromebook Android apps guide.
- Update ChromeOS: Select the time in the bottom-right corner, open Settings, then About ChromeOS. Check the installed version and select Check for updates if available; restart if an update downloads. See Google’s ChromeOS update instructions.
- Check storage and device management: Leave room for the game and its files. If the Chromebook is managed by a school or employer, ask the administrator whether app installation or Linux is permitted rather than trying to bypass policy.
- Have the correct Microsoft account ready: Sign in with the account associated with the edition or access you intend to use. If the game asks you to buy it again, check that account’s purchase and platform entitlement rather than assuming one purchase unlocks every version on every device.
Install regular Minecraft from Google Play
- Open the Launcher or app menu and select the Google Play Store.
- Search for Minecraft. Confirm that the result is the official Mojang/Minecraft listing, not an unrelated app.
- Select Install, or complete the purchase if the listing indicates you do not own it. If the Play Store does not offer the app for your device, do not download an APK from an unofficial site.
- When installation finishes, open Minecraft and sign in with the Microsoft account that has the relevant access.
- Allow any game update to finish, then test a new or existing world.
This is the most straightforward route for players who want Bedrock on a compatible Chromebook. Minecraft’s official edition information distinguishes Bedrock’s broader cross-platform play from Java’s separate platform ecosystem; multiplayer requires compatible editions.
If Minecraft does not appear or install
A missing or unavailable listing usually indicates that the Chromebook lacks Android app support, the device or ChromeOS configuration is not compatible, an administrator has blocked the Play Store or app, or the account or region does not show the listing. Update and restart the Chromebook, check whether other Android apps install, and ask the administrator about restrictions on a managed device. Google notes that only some Chromebooks support Android apps in its compatibility guidance.

If the Play Store itself will not open, restart the Chromebook, confirm Wi-Fi works, update ChromeOS, then reopen the store and check whether other Android apps install. For a managed Chromebook, contact its administrator. These are among Google’s recommended steps for fixing Play Store problems on a Chromebook.
Install Minecraft Education for school use
Minecraft Education is a separate product for classroom learning, coding activities, and eligible school or organizational access. It is not a substitute for ordinary Bedrock or Java: its support documentation says it is not compatible with other Minecraft versions such as Java or Bedrock. Check access and licensing through your school or organization; do not assume the app is free for every consumer.

Install it on a Chromebook you can manage
- Open the Minecraft Education download page.
- Select Chromebook or Android to open the Google Play listing.
- Select Install, then open Minecraft Education.
- Sign in with the Microsoft or school account that has access.
The official Chromebook installation guide describes this Play Store route. For eligibility and licensing details, consult Minecraft Education’s getting-started guidance and its licensing information.
When a school must deploy the app
On managed Chromebooks, an administrator may need to enable Android apps and Managed Google Play, add Minecraft Education, and assign an installation policy to the relevant users or organizational units. Google’s deployment instructions for Android apps on ChromeOS cover the Admin console path: Apps > Overview, followed by the managed Google Play and app installation settings. Students generally cannot change a school policy themselves.

Education edition requirements and limitations
These specifications apply to Minecraft Education, not to ordinary Bedrock or Java: its published Chromebook requirements include ChromeOS 83 or later and at least 2 GB RAM; its licensing documentation lists 2 GB of disk space for the game core, maps, and other files. Google recommends at least 4 GB RAM for a better Chromebook experience and warns that Minecraft Education uses significant CPU resources. Check the current Minecraft Education licensing requirements and Google deployment guidance for details.
- Worlds on shared Chromebooks are stored locally. Export important worlds before signing out, changing devices, or removing a user profile, as advised by the Chromebook installation guide.
- Classroom Mode is not available on Chromebook; Minecraft Education identifies Classroom Settings as the workaround. See its Chromebook support page.
- Controller support is limited or unavailable for Minecraft Education on Chromebook; its Chromebook guidance describes mouse, trackpad, and touch input rather than controller support. Check the Google deployment guidance before planning classroom controls.
- Proxy support is not currently supported or validated, according to the Minecraft Education Chromebook support page.
Install Java Edition through ChromeOS Linux
Choose this route only if you specifically need Java Edition—for Java-only servers, Java mods, or Java-specific features—and are comfortable troubleshooting Linux. It is not a direct ChromeOS installation: the launcher runs inside the Linux development environment. Google documents that Linux is disabled by default and that hardware acceleration is not supported in its documented Linux environment, so installing the launcher does not guarantee smooth gameplay on a particular Chromebook.

Set up Linux and install the official launcher
- Open Settings, then select About ChromeOS > Developers.
- Next to Linux development environment, select Set up and complete the prompts. Google says setup can take 10 minutes or more. Managed Chromebooks may block this option. See Google’s Linux development environment instructions.
- Open the Terminal app. In a browser, visit the official Minecraft download page and choose the Debian or Debian-based download for the Java launcher.
- In the Files app, move the downloaded
.debpackage into Linux files. - Double-click the package and select Install if ChromeOS offers that option.
- Open the launcher, sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the relevant Java access, and try an unmodded profile before adding mods.
If the graphical installer does not work
From Terminal, install the package with APT, substituting the exact filename shown in Linux files if it differs:
sudo apt install ./Minecraft.deb
The official download page provides the Debian-based launcher, but does not guarantee that every Chromebook’s processor, graphics, or memory can run Java gameplay acceptably. ARM-based Chromebooks and devices with limited graphics performance may have additional compatibility problems. Java and Bedrock also use separate multiplayer ecosystems and ordinary world formats.
Best Value
Troubleshoot a slow or failing Java launch
- Update ChromeOS and restart the Chromebook.
- Update Linux packages in Terminal using Google’s documented command:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
- Confirm the
.debfile is in Linux files and that the Chromebook has free storage. - Test an unmodded profile; remove incompatible mods or mod loaders while troubleshooting.
- Lower render distance and graphics settings, close other apps, and retry. If performance remains unusable, use the Play Store edition if compatible or choose another device.
Google’s Linux setup and troubleshooting details are in its ChromeOS Linux guide. Do not enable Developer Mode as a routine installation step: the official Play Store and Linux-container routes do not require it.
Improve Minecraft performance on a Chromebook
- Close extra browser tabs and Android apps, then restart if the Chromebook has been running for a long time.
- Lower render distance and graphics settings; avoid heavy texture packs or large modpacks on entry-level hardware.
- Keep the Chromebook on a hard surface so it can shed heat. Minecraft Education’s ChromeOS deployment guidance warns that CPU-heavy use, heat, and fanless designs can affect performance (Google’s Chromebook deployment notes).
- Keep several gigabytes of storage free for game files, updates, and worlds; do not fill internal storage completely.
- Export important Education worlds before powerwashing or removing a user profile.
When local installation is not an option
If the Play Store does not support your Chromebook and Linux is unavailable or too slow, use another device or consider cloud gaming where the service, game library, account, network, and school network permit it. Google lists gaming services including GeForce NOW in its Chromebook gaming guide; check current availability and terms directly. Cloud gaming requires a reliable internet connection and is not a solution for offline play. For a school-managed Chromebook that blocks installation, ask the administrator rather than attempting to bypass the restriction.
