If your iPhone is stuck on “Verifying Security Response,” first connect it to power and reliable Wi‑Fi, briefly wait if it is still responsive, then turn off any VPN or proxy and restart the phone. Retry the update in Settings. If the iPhone has moved to a frozen Apple logo, use the separate recovery-mode steps below; if the response installed and a problem began afterward, you can remove that installed response.
Identify what is stuck

A Rapid Security Response is a smaller security update intended to deliver important protections before they are included in a later full iOS update. “Verifying” is an update-validation state, not proof that installation completed. Apple notes that network conditions and other circumstances can affect updates; wait briefly if the phone is responsive, but do not leave an unchanged screen indefinitely. Apple’s iPhone update guidance covers wireless and computer-based updates.
Try the low-risk fixes while the iPhone is responsive
1. Connect to power and a usable Wi‑Fi network
- Plug the iPhone into its charger and keep it awake during the retry.
- Use a stable Wi‑Fi network. Hotel, airport, café, and other captive-portal networks may require you to sign in through Safari before the phone can reach update services.
- Open Safari to confirm that internet access works. If a sign-in page appears, complete it first.
- Try a different Wi‑Fi network if available. A personal hotspot can help test whether the original network is the problem, but consider carrier data limits and connection stability before using it for a system update.
- Restart your router if other devices are also having trouble.
- Check that date and time are set automatically.
If the update works on a different network, the original network is a likely obstacle. A Wi‑Fi icon alone does not confirm that Apple’s update servers are reachable.
2. Temporarily disable VPNs, proxies, or filtering
Apple warns that VPN or proxy connections may prevent an iPhone from contacting update servers. Temporarily turn off a VPN, proxy, DNS filter, or security app that filters connections, then retry. Restore the protection after the update attempt. If the iPhone is managed by work or school, or the network settings are controlled by an administrator, ask IT rather than bypassing those controls.

3. Restart the iPhone
If the screen remains unchanged, Settings is unresponsive, or the phone is clearly not progressing, restart it. Use a normal restart if the controls still work. If the phone cannot respond, use the force-restart button sequence appropriate to its model; Apple’s button combinations differ across iPhone generations, so follow Apple’s current update and restore troubleshooting guidance for the model-specific recovery instructions. A force restart interrupts a stalled operating state; it does not remove the response or roll back security changes.
4. Check available storage
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Remove or offload large downloads, videos, or unused apps if space is tight.
- Protect important photos and files: confirm they are backed up before deleting them.
- Retry the update after making room.
There is no single free-space figure that applies to every device and update. Apple may offer to temporarily remove apps during a wireless update; Apple says those apps are reinstalled automatically after installation completes. See Apple’s update guidance.

5. Retry from Software Update
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Review the available update options and choose the one you intend to install.
- Tap Install Now or Download and Install, then enter your passcode if prompted.
A Rapid Security Response is not necessarily a major iOS upgrade. If more than one option appears, use the choices shown on the iPhone rather than trying to install an obsolete or incompatible version. Apple’s wireless-update instructions are at support.apple.com.
Delete and download the update again if a failed package is listed
If the update package appears as a distinct item in Settings > General > iPhone Storage, and the wireless attempt failed, you can delete that update item, restart the iPhone, and check Software Update again. The item’s label and availability depend on the iOS version and failure state. Delete only the clearly identified update package—not unrelated files or an already installed security response.

Update using a Mac or Windows PC
If wireless updating still fails, Apple supports updating through a computer. Back up the iPhone first if possible, install current updates for the computer’s operating system or Apple software, and use a reliable USB cable and port.

- Connect the iPhone to the computer. Unlock it and tap Trust if asked.
- Open Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, then select the iPhone.
- Choose Check for Update or Update, not Restore, when the goal is to preserve data.
- Keep the iPhone connected until the update finishes.

If the iPhone is stuck on the Apple logo
A phone that no longer reaches the Home Screen needs a different path from a verification message that is stuck inside Settings.
- Connect the iPhone to a Mac or Windows PC and open Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes.
- Put the iPhone into recovery mode using the model-specific button sequence in Apple’s recovery and update instructions.
- When the computer offers Update or Restore, try Update first. It is the data-preserving attempt.
- Choose Restore only if Update fails and you understand that Restore erases the device. If you have no backup, do not proceed until you have considered the data loss.
If recovery mode cannot update or restore the iPhone, or it repeatedly reboots or stays unresponsive, contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider rather than repeating power cycles indefinitely.

Remove a response only if it already installed and caused a problem
Use removal as a troubleshooting or compatibility option—not as a fix for a response that never finished verifying. On supported versions, open Settings > General > About > iOS Version > Remove Security Response, then confirm. The option may not appear if the response was never installed, and labels can vary by iOS version. Apple says a removed response can be reinstalled later or included in a subsequent software update. Removing it also removes the protection it supplied, so once the underlying issue is resolved, reinstall it or install the next full iOS update. Check less common causes and decide when to escalate
Check Apple service availability
If the problem began suddenly or persists across networks, check Apple System Status. A listed service issue may explain a failed attempt, but a green page does not rule out every brief, regional, or narrowly scoped update problem.
Consider device management and unusual software states
- Work- or school-managed iPhone: An administrator may control update timing, restrictions, or security responses. Contact IT if an option is unavailable or blocked. Apple’s device-support material discusses managing Rapid Security Response: Apple Device Support Exam Prep Guide.
- Beta software or configuration profile: These can affect update channels or settings. Do not assume they are the cause, but account for them when troubleshooting.
- Jailbroken iPhone: Standard Apple update steps may not apply; seek appropriate Apple support before attempting changes that could affect data or device availability.
Optional last network step
Resetting network settings is a later diagnostic option if other network checks fail, not a guaranteed fix. It removes saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords and can affect VPN and related network settings. Make sure you have the Wi‑Fi credentials you need before using it; menu wording can vary by iOS version.
Stop and get help when data or hardware is at risk
- Recovery-mode Update and Restore both fail.
- The iPhone repeatedly restarts or remains unresponsive after a force restart.
- You are being offered Restore and do not have a backup or accept the data loss.
- A managed-device policy prevents the update or changes you need.
Apple Community posts describe “Unable to Verify Security Response” and stalled verification messages, but they are user reports, not official diagnoses: verification error report, stalled verification report, and removal-path discussion.
