To turn text prediction on or off for a physical keyboard in Windows 10, open Start → Settings → Devices → Typing and switch Show text suggestions as I type under Hardware keyboard. Press Windows key + I to open Settings directly.
What Windows text prediction does
Windows text suggestions offer words as you type; they do not automatically replace what you have written. Suggestions appear near the insertion point and can change as you enter more letters. Microsoft describes the feature in its Windows text suggestions guide.
This setting is specifically for Windows suggestions with a physical keyboard. It is separate from Word’s Editor predictions, search-box suggestions and autocorrect. The touch keyboard is the on-screen keyboard itself, not another name for text prediction.
Enable suggestions for a physical keyboard
- Press Windows key + I or select Start → Settings.
- Select Devices, then Typing.
- Under Hardware keyboard, turn on Show text suggestions as I type.
- Test it in an editable field, such as a document, chat message or browser comment.
In a supported text field, Windows should offer words as you type. You choose whether to use a suggestion; it is not automatically inserted.

Disable suggestions for a physical keyboard
Go to Start → Settings → Devices → Typing → Hardware keyboard and turn Show text suggestions as I type off. This stops Windows’ built-in physical-keyboard suggestions. It does not necessarily turn off predictions or spelling features provided separately by Word, a browser, an email app or other software.
Turn on suggestions for the on-screen keyboard
The software-keyboard option is separate from the hardware-keyboard switch. On the Start → Settings → Devices → Typing page, under Typing, enable Show text suggestions as I type on the software keyboard to get suggestions while using the on-screen keyboard. Choose or dismiss a suggestion
- Select a suggestion with the mouse, or touch it on a touch-capable device.
- Press Up Arrow to enter the suggestion list, use Left Arrow or Right Arrow to move through suggestions, then press Enter to insert one.
- Press Esc or click outside the suggestions window to dismiss it without choosing a word.
These are the controls Microsoft documents for Windows text suggestions; do not assume that a shortcut used by another application, such as Word, works the same way here.
Use suggestions for more than one language
On Start → Settings → Devices → Typing, turn on Show text suggestions based on the recognized languages you’re typing in. Exact wording can vary with the Windows build or display language. Suggestions depend on Windows recognizing the input language and having the relevant language or keyboard configuration available. If suggestions do not appear
- Check the right switch. For a physical keyboard, verify Show text suggestions as I type under Hardware keyboard; the software-keyboard switch controls a different input method.
- Try another ordinary text field. Test in a document or chat and then in a second app. Microsoft suggests examples such as Teams, Word and browser comments. Not every app or text box necessarily uses Windows system suggestions.
- Check for app-specific predictions. If predictions appear only in one application, that app may have its own editor setting or may handle text entry differently. Restarting the affected app is a reasonable check.
- Check the active language and layout. Confirm that the intended input language or keyboard layout is selected and configured in Windows.
- If the toggle is missing, confirm the Windows version and page. Windows 10 uses Devices → Typing; Windows 11 has a different Settings path. Search Settings for “text suggestions” or “Typing.” A different build or display language, a managed work or school device, or a particular input configuration may affect what options are shown. If an organization manages the device, its policies may restrict settings.
Tell Windows suggestions apart from other features

If suggestions appear only in Word, check Word’s separate Show text predictions while typing setting. Microsoft documents its Word controls in Editor text predictions in Word. If suggestions appear in a Bing search box, Bing has its own search-suggestions setting.

Turning off the suggestion switch is not the same as clearing every typing-related personalization setting. Microsoft lists a separate Start → Settings → Privacy → Inking & typing personalization control and says turning that personalization setting off clears the custom word list. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says regular free Windows Update software updates, technical support and security fixes for Windows 10 are no longer provided after that date; the text-suggestion setting may still be present on existing installations.
