You may be using a different email or sign-in method than the one linked to your account, or a browser session, app block, or verification challenge may be getting in the way. Stop repeated guesses, confirm the account and login method, then use Upwork’s password-reset flow.
Try these in order:
- Confirm the email address or username associated with your Upwork account.
- Choose the same sign-in method you normally use: email and password, Google, or Apple.
- Select Forgot password? on the Upwork login page and follow the email instructions.
- Check spam and other filtered folders if the message does not arrive.
- Test in a private window or another supported browser; if you are using an app, try the website.
- Check Upwork’s status page for an outage or maintenance event.
- If you cannot access your account email or verification methods, use Upwork’s security-information recovery form.
Upwork’s login troubleshooting guide warns against creating another account to solve an access problem.
Check that you have the right account and login method
A password reset only helps if you request it for the account you are trying to access. Search personal, work, and older email inboxes for messages containing “Upwork,” “Proposal,” “Contract,” or “Job post.” The address that received those messages is a useful clue to the account email. Upwork recommends checking your inboxes as part of its login troubleshooting steps.
- Check for a work address versus a personal address, or an older address you no longer use.
- If a password manager fills in credentials, make sure it has not selected another Upwork account or an old password.
- If you normally select Log in with Google or Log in with Apple, use that button instead of assuming the account uses an Upwork password. These sign-in options depend on how the account was configured; they are not automatically interchangeable with password login. See Upwork’s login-options guidance.
If you can get in through Google or Apple, you can review Account settings → Password and Security to manage login options and set an Upwork password if the account does not already have one.

Reset your Upwork password
- Open the Upwork login page and select Forgot password?
- Enter the username or email associated with the account.
- Open the reset message sent by Upwork and follow its instructions. Use the newest reset email rather than an older one.
- Complete a two-step verification challenge if Upwork asks for one.
- Return to the login page and enter the new password. If autofill keeps inserting the old one, type the new password manually.
These are Upwork’s documented steps for resetting a password or security answer. Do not share a reset link or temporary password with anyone. After you regain access, update saved credentials on your devices and avoid reusing a password that may have been exposed elsewhere.
If the reset email does not arrive
- Check that you entered the account email or username correctly, then try any other email address that may be linked to the account.
- Look in spam, junk, promotions, quarantine, and workplace-filtered mail. Search the mailbox for “Upwork.”
- Request another reset message and use the latest one you receive.
- If you cannot access the registered email address, stop repeating reset requests and use account recovery instead. Upwork says it cannot send reset information to an address you cannot access.
Upwork’s password and security-answer instructions cover the reset process and recovery when email access is unavailable.

If the new password is still rejected
First make sure you are signing into the same account and using its usual login path. Then test whether the problem belongs to your browser session:
- Open a private or incognito window and try Upwork there.
- If that works, clear Upwork cookies and cached site data in your normal browser.
- Temporarily disable extensions that could interfere with sign-in, such as password, privacy, ad-blocking, or security extensions. If you use a VPN or proxy, turn it off briefly to test.
- Try another device or switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data.
A private window is a quick diagnostic, not a permanent repair if the normal browser profile has stale data. Upwork recommends clearing cache and cookies and testing another browser or device when login trouble persists; see its login issues FAQ. Upwork supports the latest two versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari, according to its technical troubleshooting guide.

For an unusual SSL/TLS error on an older Windows system, Upwork says TLS protocols must be enabled and outdated SSL protocols are not supported. That is a separate compatibility issue, not the usual explanation for an incorrect-password message; see Upwork’s supported-browser guidance.
If you are using the Upwork mobile or Desktop App
Mobile app
Too many failed login attempts in a short time can trigger a security block in the mobile app. Upwork’s documented remedy is to visit Upwork.com and try signing in there to unblock the account. Avoid continuing to guess passwords in the app. If you still have trouble, update the app from its official app store, force-close and reopen it, restart your phone, test the website in a supported mobile browser, and check another network. Upwork’s mobile-app troubleshooting guide also recommends checking its status page.

Desktop App and Google sign-in
If Google sign-in fails specifically in the Upwork Desktop App, Upwork documents a separate troubleshooting path: disconnect Google authorization, then retry with your username where applicable. This applies to that Desktop App sign-in issue; it is not a general fix for all password errors. Follow Upwork’s Desktop App troubleshooting instructions.

If Upwork accepts the password but then asks for verification, the remaining problem is not necessarily the password. Upwork lists a mobile-app prompt, SMS, an authenticator app, and a security question as two-step verification options. Choose Try another method if it is offered and another method is already enabled. Upwork recommends keeping multiple methods available so that losing access to one device does not leave you without a way to verify. See its two-step verification guide.

- Authenticator code rejected: Check that your device’s date and time are correct; manual time settings or an offline device may cause a mismatch.
- SMS unavailable: Upwork’s phone-verification guidance says SMS verification requires identity verification or a billing method, and VOIP numbers are not accepted. See how to verify a phone number on Upwork.
- Security answer forgotten: Select Forgot your answer? and follow the email instructions. If you have other verification methods, try one of them when prompted. Upwork explains this in its security-answer reset instructions.
- No verification method available: Use the security-information recovery form described below.
If you no longer have your account email or verification method
Use Upwork’s Reset your Security Information form when the ordinary reset cannot reach you or you cannot complete verification. It may ask for the account email, a contact email if the original is inaccessible, the phone number on the account, approximate month and year of joining, registration-location details, and other ownership information. Provide accurate details that match the account. Support may need to verify your identity; recovery is not necessarily immediate.
Upwork says support may reset the password and two-step verification options and send a temporary password by email. Never send a password, verification code, or full financial credentials to an unofficial contact. Use Upwork’s official Help and recovery pages.
Do not create a second Upwork account
Do not register with another email to get around a lockout. Upwork’s login guidance says each person is permitted only one account under its Terms of Service and that creating another account may lead to suspension of one or both accounts. Recover the existing account through the reset or security-information form instead: Upwork’s login troubleshooting guide.
Check for an outage or account compromise
A login error alone cannot establish that Upwork is down. Check Upwork’s status page for current service interruptions or scheduled maintenance, as recommended in its technical troubleshooting guide.
If you suspect someone changed your password or account details, stop guessing, use the reset process from Upwork’s official site, and secure the email account tied to Upwork. Contact Upwork support if reset messages or account details have changed unexpectedly. After recovery, replace any reused passwords elsewhere and configure more than one verification method. Upwork advises reporting suspected account compromise through its official login-options guidance.
