Error 0x800703ee means Windows returned ERROR_FILE_INVALID: a file’s volume was changed or became inconsistent while Windows was using it. The code is not a single diagnosis. Removable storage, filter-driver software, update-cache corruption, file-system problems, component-store damage, and—during a Windows 11 upgrade—EFI or boot-configuration issues can all produce the failure.
Start with the low-risk isolation steps below and move upward only as needed. Also note that Windows 10 reached end of ordinary support on October 14, 2025. A failed update may be a legacy package, a Windows 10-to-Windows 11 upgrade, or an update available only through an applicable paid or organizational servicing program. Check that the update is still applicable to your servicing channel at Microsoft’s lifecycle information.
What 0x800703ee means
Windows maps 0x800703ee to ERROR_FILE_INVALID. The underlying message says that “the volume for a file has been externally altered so that the opened file is no longer valid.” “Externally altered” does not imply malware. It can describe a USB device being disconnected, a backup or antivirus filter changing a file, synchronization or disk software intercepting I/O, corruption in the file system or component store, an invalid cached package, or an inconsistent EFI System Partition during an operating-system upgrade.
Because the code does not identify which file or volume failed, the failure stage matters more than the number alone.

Identify the failed update before repairing anything
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and note whether the failure is a monthly cumulative, .NET, servicing-stack, driver, or feature update.
- Write down the exact KB number, if one is shown. Check View update history so you do not reinstall a package that already succeeded.
- Press Win + R, type
winver, and press Enter. Record the Windows version and build. - Note whether the error appears while downloading, during installation inside Windows, after a reboot, or during Windows 10-to-Windows 11 Setup.

Before advanced fixes: protect data and isolate hardware
- Back up important documents and make sure BitLocker recovery information is available.
- Restart the PC once; a pending reboot can block another servicing operation.
- Disconnect USB flash drives, external disks, SD-card readers, docking stations, optical media, and other nonessential peripherals. Retry with only keyboard, mouse, display, and network connected.
- Check free space on the internal system drive. Adding a USB drive does not satisfy every Windows or system-partition requirement.
- Pause OneDrive or other sync clients and exit backup, disk-imaging, partition, virtual-drive, and disc-writing applications.
- Use reliable power and internet. These steps are isolation measures, not guaranteed cures.
Fix 1: Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter
On many Windows 10 builds, go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter. Microsoft may instead open the Get Help app or a web-based support flow, and labels vary by build. Follow the current workflow at Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter page.
The troubleshooter can correct common configuration and cache problems; it is not a dedicated test for ERROR_FILE_INVALID. Restart and retry after it completes.
Fix 2: Temporarily remove software that can alter file operations
Microsoft notes that third-party security products can interfere with Windows updates. For a meaningful test, temporarily uninstall incompatible third-party antivirus or endpoint security rather than merely closing its tray icon; a restart may be needed to unload its filter driver. The same concern applies to ransomware-protection modules, VPNs with network filters, encryption and storage utilities, backup/snapshot tools, drive monitors, synchronization clients, and optical-media software.
- Confirm you can reinstall the product and have its license or product key.
- Do not leave the PC unprotected longer than necessary; Microsoft Defender should provide baseline protection while third-party software is absent.
- Reinstall a compatible product or re-enable your protection immediately after testing.

Fix 3: Reset Windows Update’s working folders
Renaming the folders preserves a rollback copy and is safer than deleting them outright.
- Open Start, search for Command Prompt, select Run as administrator, and approve the prompt.
- Run these commands one at a time:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
ren %systemroot%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.bak
ren %systemroot%System32catroot2 catroot2.bak
net start bits
net start wuauserv- Restart Windows and retry the update.
The stop commands should stop the relevant services and the rename commands should complete without an “in use” message. If a service will not stop, restart and try again. If a folder is locked, security, backup, indexing, or another update process may still be holding it. After the update succeeds, remove the old .bak folders only if you need the disk space and no rollback is required. Microsoft documents this procedure at Troubleshoot problems updating Windows.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM, then SFC
In an elevated Command Prompt, run DISM first and SFC second:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannowDISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as a source. Then restart and retry Windows Update.
Interpret the results
- “The restore operation completed successfully”: DISM completed its repair operation.
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations”: SFC found no protected-file corruption.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them”: restart before retrying.
- Some files could not be repaired: preserve the CBS log, run DISM again if appropriate, and consider an in-place repair if the failure continues.
DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. If it reports missing source files such as 0x800f081f, use a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess. The source must match the installed edition, language, architecture, and compatible build; do not guess an ISO path or image index. Fix 5: Check the file system and storage health
Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
chkdsk /f C:If Windows says the drive is in use, type Y to schedule the check, restart, and let it finish. CHKDSK is included in Microsoft’s advanced update troubleshooting steps.
Give storage problems priority if you also see file-copy failures, corrupt applications, disappearing files, drive disconnects, Event Viewer disk/NTFS/storahci warnings, very slow I/O, or SMART warnings from the drive maker. Back up or seek professional data recovery before repeated repairs; software troubleshooting cannot repair a physically failing drive.

Fix 6: Use a clean boot to isolate background conflicts
- Press Win + R, type
msconfig, and press Enter. - On Services, select Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all.
- On Startup, open Task Manager and disable nonessential startup items.
- Restart and retry the update.
- Restore normal startup afterward if the update did not resolve the problem.
Do not disable Microsoft services indiscriminately or leave the computer in a diagnostic state permanently. This procedure is for isolating a third-party conflict, not for routine operation.
Fix 7: If the error occurs during a Windows 11 upgrade
Upgrade-specific investigation is warranted when Setup fails during reboot or rollback, mentions EFI, BCD, or boot configuration, or reports that a volume became invalid. A Microsoft Q&A response associates some such cases with EFI or boot-configuration inconsistency, but that is community guidance—not proof that every 0x800703ee error has an EFI cause.
Collect evidence safely
- Record the exact Setup phase and accompanying message.
- Check Disk Management for the EFI System Partition, but do not resize, format, or delete it casually.
- Copy the logs before modifying anything:
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanthersetupact.log
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanthersetuperr.logThe $WINDOWS.~BT directory is hidden. Do not delete it before collecting logs. Avoid casual registry filter-driver deletion, BCD editing, or bcdboot commands; an incorrect boot-partition change can make Windows unbootable. If BitLocker is enabled, have the recovery key ready.
Fix 8: Install the exact KB manually
If Windows Update names a KB, search that exact number in the Microsoft Update Catalog. Choose the package matching your Windows 10 version, x64/x86/ARM64 architecture, edition, and prerequisites, including any required servicing-stack package. Download it from Microsoft, disconnect unnecessary external media, run the standalone installer as administrator if requested, restart, and check update history.

Do not install a random newer KB because it is recent. A wrong architecture or edition will not substitute for the applicable package.
Final repair option: an in-place installation
For a persistent feature-upgrade or servicing failure, official installation media can replace damaged Windows components while preserving files and applications when the correct conditions are met.
- Back up first and verify the Windows edition, language, and architecture.
- Use Microsoft’s official Windows 10 or Windows 11 download page.
- From the running Windows installation, mount the ISO or open the media and launch
setup.exe. - Choose Keep personal files and apps when that option is available.
- Do not boot from the media when your goal is to preserve installed programs; booting from it commonly leads toward a clean-install workflow.
This is not a guaranteed fix for failing hardware or a severely damaged boot partition. If the preservation option is unavailable, stop and resolve the edition, language, architecture, or compatibility mismatch first.
When to stop troubleshooting
Seek experienced support or replace the drive rather than repeatedly forcing updates when files are becoming corrupt, the drive reports errors, Windows cannot boot reliably, EFI/BCD repair is required without a backup or recovery key, or an in-place repair also fails. If every update fails with different codes, investigate the broader component store, servicing prerequisites, free space, security/filter drivers, and hardware stability instead of treating each KB as a separate incident.
