If YouTube Studio shows your new thumbnail but viewers still see the old one, first confirm you selected the right image and clicked Save. YouTube says changes may take time to appear, but it does not give a guaranteed update time. Compare the video on more than one surface and device before changing the image again: a difference may be limited to one app or browser, or may be expected behavior for a vertical video or an active thumbnail test.

Start by checking whether the change actually saved

An image visible in the thumbnail editor is not enough to establish that viewers have received the change. Open the video’s details in YouTube Studio, look at the selected thumbnail, and save the video after choosing or uploading the intended image.

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select the video whose thumbnail you changed.
  2. In the video details, find Thumbnail. Select the intended uploaded image or upload it if necessary.
  3. Click Save, then reopen the video details and confirm the intended image remains selected.
  4. For a Short, manage the thumbnail in the Shorts section of Studio. YouTube says custom thumbnails for Shorts can be added in Studio on a computer.

Custom thumbnails require a verified account. If the custom-thumbnail option is unavailable, check account verification before treating the missing control as an upload failure. YouTube’s thumbnail instructions say, “It may take time for your thumbnail changes to appear on YouTube,” but provide no guaranteed number of minutes or hours. Avoid relying on a fixed wait such as 24 or 48 hours as official guidance.

Find out where the old image is still appearing

Compare the video in Studio with the actual viewer surfaces where the mismatch occurs. Check the watch page, channel page, search results, and—where relevant—the YouTube app and a browser. Note which surface shows the new image and which shows the old one. If the same video looks different in different places, that difference is useful: it can point to surface-specific display behavior rather than a failed selection.

  • New image in Studio, old image everywhere viewers see the video: confirm the save, then allow time for the change to appear. The official thumbnail guidance does not specify a propagation deadline.
  • New image on one device, old image on another: troubleshoot the stale app or browser as a client-side check.
  • Different image only on certain mobile discovery surfaces for a vertical video: check YouTube’s vertical-video thumbnail behavior below.
  • Images appear to change while a test is running: check the thumbnail test in Studio.

A YouTube Help Community post dated February 22, 2025 describes the familiar report of Studio showing a custom image while a viewer sees an old one. That report illustrates the symptom; it does not establish a universal cause or a reliable fix.

If the problem appears limited to an app or browser

YouTube’s general video-error troubleshooting recommends steps such as restarting or updating the app, updating the browser, clearing browser cache and cookies, and checking extensions. These are reasonable checks when only one client looks stale, but the guidance is about video errors—not a confirmed diagnosis of thumbnail caching. Clearing cache may help with a local display issue; it cannot prove that a server-side thumbnail change has propagated, and it is not a guaranteed thumbnail fix.

Check the image format, dimensions, and upload route

A file that does not meet YouTube’s recommendations or upload limits can prevent a successful custom-thumbnail upload. YouTube recommends JPG or PNG. Its current guidance distinguishes standard video thumbnails from Shorts thumbnails, and the size limit depends on whether the thumbnail is uploaded from desktop or mobile.

Thumbnail type Recommended dimensions Minimum dimension stated Recommended ratio Upload size limit
Regular video 3840 × 2160 pixels Minimum width: 640 pixels 16:9 Mobile video thumbnails: 2 MB; desktop video thumbnails: 50 MB
Shorts 2160 × 3840 pixels Minimum height: 640 pixels 9:16 Desktop Shorts thumbnails: 50 MB; the cited guidance does not state a separate mobile Shorts limit

These are YouTube’s published recommendations and limits, not a guarantee that a particular file will display identically on every surface. If the upload is rejected, check the file type, dimensions, and size against the route you used, then upload an adjusted image and save again.

Account for vertical-video display behavior

A vertical video can legitimately show a different thumbnail on some surfaces. YouTube says that when a vertical video has a 16:9 custom thumbnail, it replaces that image with an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. The custom thumbnail still appears in the watch feed, watch history, and on non-mobile platforms.

So, if the video is vertical and the mismatch is limited to one of those specified mobile discovery surfaces, compare it with the watch feed or watch history before uploading repeatedly. The substituted crop is documented behavior; it does not by itself mean your saved thumbnail failed.

Look for policy notices, limits, or a thumbnail test

Policy and account notices

Custom thumbnails must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube may turn off custom thumbnails for certain search results if it considers them inappropriate for viewers. If YouTube issues a strike, its help page says the creator receives an email and sees an alert in Channel Settings. Check those notices if the custom thumbnail option is disabled or the image is not being accepted.

Daily custom-thumbnail upload limits vary by region and channel history. If Studio reports “Daily custom thumbnail limit reached,” YouTube’s stated remedy is to try again in 24 hours. This is a response to that specific limit message, not a general promised refresh time for all thumbnail changes.

Active A/B testing

If you are testing thumbnails, do not assume the image currently shown is a simple reflection of the last manual selection. YouTube says a thumbnail A/B test can take a few days or up to two weeks. When it ends, the option with the highest watch time is shown to viewers, or the first submitted option if there is no clear winner. Review the test in Studio to see whether it is still active and how it concluded.

Use this troubleshooting order

  1. Verify selection and save: reopen the video details, confirm the intended thumbnail is selected, and click Save.
  2. Check eligibility: confirm the account is verified and look for a policy alert, strike notice, or upload-limit message.
  3. Validate the file: check JPG or PNG format, the relevant dimensions and ratio, and the upload limit for desktop or mobile.
  4. Compare surfaces: check Studio, the watch page, channel page, and search results, then compare the app with a browser or another device.
  5. Check format behavior: if the video is vertical, account for YouTube’s generated crop on Home, Explore, and subscription pages.
  6. Check testing: inspect Studio for an active thumbnail A/B test and its result.
  7. Troubleshoot one stale client: restart or update the app, update the browser, and try clearing browser cache and cookies. Treat these as general display checks, not a proven thumbnail-specific fix.
  8. Document any remaining mismatch: record the video URL, when you saved the image, which surfaces show each version, and whether another device reproduces the issue.

When the usual checks do not explain it

If the intended image remains selected after saving, the file meets the stated requirements, no account notice or test explains the display, and the mismatch appears on multiple devices, the cited YouTube guidance does not identify a particular backend, CDN, or processing cause for an individual case. Do not infer a specific fault from an old image alone.

When reporting the issue to YouTube, make the report reproducible: include the video URL, the time you saved the thumbnail, the exact surfaces and devices you checked, and whether the new image appears in Studio. Distinguish a viewer-facing mismatch from an upload rejection or a missing thumbnail control; they are different symptoms and the details help describe the case accurately.

Does changing a thumbnail affect recommendations?

YouTube’s performance FAQ explains that changing a thumbnail does not itself cause an algorithmic rerank. Its systems respond to how viewers interact with the changed presentation. That is separate from whether the new image has appeared on every viewer surface: a display mismatch should be investigated with the save, surface, format, and account checks above, not treated as evidence of an algorithmic penalty.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot of a YouTube page to document which image appears on a particular surface, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one API request. It does not update a YouTube thumbnail or diagnose YouTube’s publishing state; use Studio for the actual thumbnail change. ScreenshotNeo’s screenshot API and documentation are for capturing pages:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.youtube.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents, and includes 1,000 screenshots a month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Those are screenshot-service features, not a fix for YouTube thumbnail updates. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month, with no card.
