To capture a whole webpage, document, or spreadsheet in Snagit, open All-in-One capture, start a capture, point at the target window, and click the orange scrolling arrow for the direction you need. Snagit scrolls through the content and opens one long image in Editor. If automatic scrolling misses content or gives you no arrow, use Manual Scrolling Capture and control the scroll yourself.

Automatic scrolling capture in Snagit

The labels vary slightly between Snagit releases. TechSmith’s 2023 help notes that scrolling option names changed in version 2023.2.0, so use the current equivalent shown in your Capture window rather than relying on an older tutorial. The workflow below applies to the current All-in-One capture design described by TechSmith.

  1. Open the material. Display the webpage, document, app window, or spreadsheet you want to capture. Maximize the window when possible.
  2. Choose All-in-One. Open Snagit’s Capture window and select the All-in-One tab.
  3. Start capture. Click Capture. The Snagit 2023 help lists Print Screen on Windows and Control+Shift+C on Mac; shortcuts can be changed and may differ by release.
  4. Target the window. Move the crosshairs over the window. Keep the selection around the content and, if possible, leave the scrollbar outside the selected area.
  5. Choose a direction. When Snagit displays an orange scrolling arrow, click the arrow pointing down, up, left, or right. TechSmith describes the feature as capturing “until you’ve captured everything,” and supports both vertical and horizontal scrolling: Snagit’s screenshot-website guide.
  6. Let Snagit scroll. Do not drag the scrollbar or move the window while capture runs. When it reaches the end, Snagit opens the stitched result in Editor.
  7. Review and finish. Inspect the top, bottom, and any repeated seams. In Editor you can save, copy, annotate, or share the result.

For a page that scrolls horizontally, use the horizontal arrow instead of the vertical one. A wide spreadsheet, design canvas, or timeline may need horizontal capture, vertical capture, or two separate captures.

Automatic or manual scrolling: which should you use?

Method Best for How it behaves Trade-off
Automatic scrolling Ordinary webpages and windows with a recognized scrollbar Snagit scrolls the target window after you click an orange arrow Fastest, but dynamic layouts, hidden scrollbars, or unsupported controls can interrupt it
Manual Scrolling Capture Pages or apps where you need exact boundaries or automatic capture fails You decide how far to scroll and which portions to include More control, but requires smooth, consistent scrolling and manual checking

TechSmith lists Manual Scrolling Capture for Snagit 13 and later. Use it when an automatic run stops early, duplicates a section, skips a lazy-loaded area, or never shows a scrolling arrow. The exact command name can differ by version.

Prepare the page for a cleaner, longer image

  • Maximize the target window. A larger viewport reduces the number of scroll transitions and leaves fewer seams.
  • Keep the scrollbar out of the selection. Including a moving scrollbar can create a visible stripe or confuse the stitching process.
  • Remove distractions. Exclude irrelevant margins, ads, floating toolbars, and side panels from the selected region.
  • Use 100% zoom. Browser or application zoom above or below 100% can change line wrapping and make stitching less predictable.
  • Scroll in one direction. Smooth, steady movement works better than zigzagging up and down.
  • Wait for dynamic content. Let images, tables, and expandable sections finish loading before starting. If a page loads more rows only after scrolling, pause briefly at each section during a manual capture.
  • Watch for parallax effects. TechSmith warns that scrolling (formerly called Panoramic scrolling) may have trouble accurately capturing parallax websites: TechSmith’s scrolling-capture troubleshooting article.

Do not resize, move, or switch the target window while Snagit is capturing. Browser extensions, overlays, and security software can also alter what Snagit sees.

Manual Scrolling Capture: a controlled fallback

  1. Open the same target and choose the scrolling or panoramic capture mode available in your Snagit release.
  2. Draw the capture region around only the content you need.
  3. Start the capture and scroll a consistent distance at a time. Keep the same horizontal alignment throughout.
  4. Stop after the final content is visible, then inspect the stitched result in Editor for overlaps, gaps, or repeated rows.

Manual mode is particularly useful for applications with custom scrolling controls, pages that load content asynchronously, or layouts in which the automatic detector cannot identify the scrollable region.

Windows, macOS, Chrome, and edition-specific issues

macOS capture permissions

If scrolling capture does nothing or stops immediately on macOS, open Snagit > Settings > Capture > Fix Capture Permissions. Enable Scrolling Capture, then approve Accessibility access for both Snagit and Snagithelper in macOS. Restart Snagit after changing the permissions. TechSmith documents this process here: Enable Scrolling Capture on macOS.

Chrome on Mac

TechSmith’s support documentation describes a Chrome 68-and-later workaround involving JavaScript through AppleScript: in Chrome, use View > Developer > Allow JavaScript from Apple Events. Chrome’s menus can change, so verify the label in your installed version and treat this as a version-specific fix: Scrolling Capture Failed.

Mac App Store edition

Apple sandboxing prevents full Scrolling Capture in Snagit’s Mac App Store edition, according to TechSmith. Its documented URL-dragging alternative is limited to standard HTTP pages and does not work for secure-login sites or certain dynamic pages: Scrolling Capture With Snagit App Store Release. If you need dependable scrolling capture, check which Snagit edition is installed before troubleshooting the browser.

Keeping Snagit controls out of the result

For Snagit 2024.1.0 and later, enable Hide Snagit during capture and remove Snagit controls from completed captures in Capture Preferences. This addresses captures that include the preview window or control bar: TechSmith’s control-bar support article.

Excel and other difficult application windows

Excel can behave differently from a normal webpage. TechSmith reports that hidden scrollbars can cause incomplete or repeated sections. Automatic scrolling is also unsupported in chart-sheet scenarios, custom views, Print Preview, and individual worksheet panes: Microsoft Excel and Snagit Automatic Scrolling Capture Problem.

  • Make the worksheet window large enough that the scrollbar is visible.
  • Exit Print Preview and avoid capturing an individual pane when possible.
  • Use Manual Scrolling Capture for long worksheets or unusual views.
  • For a specific range, copy the selection and paste it into Snagit Editor from the clipboard instead of stitching the entire sheet.

The same principle applies to other apps with nested panes or custom scroll controls: capture the correct scrollable surface, not merely the outer window.

Troubleshooting a failed or incomplete capture

No orange scrolling arrow appears

  • Switch to Manual Scrolling Capture.
  • Resize or maximize the window and move the scrollbar outside the selection.
  • Try the page in another browser or a private/incognito window to rule out extensions.
  • Temporarily check for conflicting capture utilities, unsupported applications, drivers, or security software.

These are the first remedies in TechSmith’s guidance for an unavailable or failed scrolling capture: Unable to Complete Scrolling Capture in Snagit.

The image stops early

  • Confirm that you clicked the arrow for the actual scrollable region.
  • Wait for lazy-loaded images or rows to render before continuing.
  • Use manual mode and scroll in short, steady increments.
  • Check whether a sticky header, cookie banner, chat widget, or overlay is changing the page height.

Sections repeat or have gaps

  • Return browser or app zoom to 100%.
  • Do not scroll in alternating directions.
  • Keep the window at a fixed size and position.
  • Exclude animated or parallax areas when they are not essential.

The capture contains Snagit’s controls

Use the Snagit 2024.1.0-or-later preference described above. On older releases, move the controls outside the selected region and hide the Snagit interface before starting.

The browser page does not respond

Site scripting and browser behavior can prevent scrolling capture. Test another browser, disable a problematic extension, or use a static copy of the page. If the site requires a secure login or continuously changes its layout, a long screenshot may not be reproducible from the browser window alone.

Reviewing and using the finished screenshot

Always inspect the top and bottom edges first, then scan for repeated headers, missing rows, and abrupt changes in text size. For a very tall page, zoom out in Editor to check the complete silhouette, then zoom in around seams. Save an untouched original before annotating so you can create a clean copy and an explanatory version. If the content is sensitive, check the image for account names, private URLs, tokens, or personal data before sharing.

Or skip the browser setup

For automated website captures, ScreenshotNeo provides a GET-based screenshot API and an MCP server for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. It accepts a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before the capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be switched off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the complete parameter list. A one-call cURL example is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

The equivalent Python request is:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

In Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo includes full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/orientation/page ranges, custom HTML/CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for a selector, delay, or network idle, ad/tracker/request/resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable cache TTLs, signed links for public image tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification, and parameter names familiar from other screenshot APIs.

FAQ

Can Snagit capture both vertical and horizontal scrolling?

Yes. Automatic scrolling offers directional arrows for vertical or horizontal movement, although the available arrow and labels depend on the target window and Snagit release.

What Snagit version introduced the current scrolling labels?

TechSmith’s 2023 help says scrolling option names changed in version 2023.2.0. If a tutorial’s wording does not match your Capture window, choose the equivalent scrolling command shown in your installation.

Is a secure, logged-in website always suitable for URL-based capture?

No. Snagit captures what your local browser session can display. TechSmith specifically notes that the Mac App Store edition’s URL-dragging alternative does not work for secure-login sites or certain dynamic pages.
