Use html2canvas(textarea) to render a textarea, then work with the canvas returned by its promise. If the captured image does not show the latest text a user typed, inspect the cloned textarea in html2canvas’s onclone callback and, if necessary, copy the live field’s value into that clone. Treat this as a defensive fix to test in your browser and installed html2canvas version—not as a universal library bug.
Capture a textarea and download the result
html2canvas takes an element and options, then returns a promise that resolves to a canvas. The following example assumes html2canvas is already loaded on the page. It captures the first textarea, checks for a missing element, and downloads the rendered canvas as a PNG:

});Load the library using the installation approach for your project, then call this function in response to a user action such as a button click. The official getting-started guide shows the html2canvas(element, options) call and promise-based usage: html2canvas getting started.
toDataURL() is convenient for a small, immediate download. For larger images, use canvas.toBlob() and create a temporary object URL instead of keeping a large base64 string in memory. If you use an object URL, revoke it after the download when it is no longer needed.

Capture only the field or include its context
Pass the textarea itself when the image should contain only that control. If the result needs its label, border, explanatory text, or surrounding form layout, pass the parent container instead:

Keep the user’s latest typed value
There is an important distinction between the live page and the document html2canvas renders. The library reconstructs a rendering from DOM information; it is not a literal pixel screenshot of the browser. Its documentation describes onclone as a callback that runs after it clones the document, letting you change the render copy without changing the original page. The documentation does not promise that every configuration and release will carry every live textarea value into that clone. Use onclone to check what the clone contains. If it has stale or missing text, synchronize the clone from the live field immediately before rendering:

}The assignment to clonedTextarea.value is a defensive implementation pattern made possible by the documented hook, not a claim that a particular html2canvas release always drops typed text. The original textarea is not changed by this edit to the clone.
For a parent container with several textareas, identify the source field and its counterpart in the clone with a stable selector rather than selecting the first textarea in both documents. For example, give the field an ID and use that ID in both queries. Verify the relationship if the page has repeated components or dynamically generated fields.

Check text layout and styling
Text can appear different even when the value is correct. Compare the result with the live control for line breaks, wrapping, padding, line height, letter spacing, repeated spaces, and long words. The project’s textarea reference test covers several of these cases, including wrapping, padding, line height, letter spacing, multiple spaces, newlines, and long words.
The CSS support matrix lists text-related properties such as font-family, font-size, font-style, font-weight, padding, overflow, white-space, word-break, word-wrap, letter-spacing, and line-break. It does not support every CSS property. Examples listed as unsupported include box-shadow, filter, mix-blend-mode, object-fit, and writing-mode. Check the current support list for any styling that materially affects your capture rather than assuming the browser’s exact appearance will be reproduced.
- For missing newlines or spacing: compare the textarea’s rendered text against its live value and test the exact content in the browser you ship.
- For different wrapping: check the field’s width and text-related CSS, and confirm that the intended font is available.
- For visual effects: simplify or adapt styling that depends on properties outside the supported feature list.
Exclude page elements or adjust the render copy
If you capture a parent container and want to omit a button, toolbar, or other unwanted element, use the data-html2canvas-ignore attribute or the ignoreElements predicate. Use onclone for temporary changes that should affect only the rendered copy. These options are documented in the configuration reference.

});Alternatively, mark an element in your markup with data-html2canvas-ignore when it should be excluded from html2canvas renders. Prefer an explicit selector or marker over broad rules that could accidentally exclude the textarea or its layout.
Handle clipping, empty output, and images
Clipped or empty canvas
Very large canvases can be clipped or empty because browsers and devices impose canvas-size limits. The html2canvas FAQ notes that limits vary with browser, operating system, and hardware, so there is no single safe maximum to apply everywhere. Its suggested approach for large content includes setting windowWidth and windowHeight from the target element’s scrollWidth and scrollHeight. See the html2canvas FAQ for the current guidance.

Missing images in a captured container
Images inside the container are subject to browser cross-origin restrictions. The configuration reference documents useCORS, proxy, and allowTaint as image-related controls. These options concern image loading and canvas security; they do not synchronize a textarea’s live value.
Check the image host’s cross-origin behavior and the relevant html2canvas configuration before treating a missing image as a textarea rendering problem. A tainted canvas can also prevent exporting its pixels, so enabling an option without understanding the browser security consequence may not produce a downloadable result.

Choose the right approach for the job
Use html2canvas when the image should represent a page element in the current browser session, including a user’s unsaved edits after you have verified the clone’s value handling. Choose the textarea itself for a tight crop or a parent for labels and other visual context. If you need the text rather than an image, read the form’s value directly; a rendering library is unnecessary for extracting text.
If you need a literal screenshot of a URL from outside that active page session, a server-side screenshot API is a different tool category. It cannot automatically see unsaved text entered in a visitor’s browser.
