If a wkhtmltopdf footer disappears only in Docker, diagnose the container that creates the PDF—not the host. In order, verify the executable and its patched-Qt support, prove a plain-text footer works on the page object, test that footer files and assets are readable inside the container, then check margins, fonts and runtime libraries. This sequence separates a binary mismatch from an inaccessible file or a layout problem without guessing at a Dockerfile.

Start with the exact binary in the production container

A host installation, build stage or development shell does not tell you what your running application invokes. Open a shell in the runtime container (or execute the same command through your orchestrator) and collect both the version and path:

wkhtmltopdf --version
command -v wkhtmltopdf
readlink -f "$(command -v wkhtmltopdf)" 2>/dev/null || true

The wkhtmltopdf project lists the 0.12.6 series as stable, released June 11, 2020, but a version string alone does not prove that your package contains the patched Qt features required by header and footer options. Linux downloads are distribution-specific, and packages supplied by a distribution can differ from the project’s builds. Compare candidates by patched-Qt support, operating-system/libc and CPU architecture compatibility, runtime libraries and fonts, and package provenance. See the official downloads and build guidance.

If the output identifies an unpatched build, install a compatible build for the container’s OS and architecture and run the version check again. Do not assume that a Debian, Alpine or other package recipe is interchangeable: the correct choice depends on your base image, architecture and binary source.

Why patched Qt matters

Footer support is associated with wkhtmltopdf builds using the project’s patched Qt. A historical 2019 issue reports --header-html and --footer-html failing with a non-patched 0.12.4 package under xvfb-run, while a patched 0.12.5 build displayed them. That is evidence that build variants can change behavior, not proof that every Docker failure has that cause; use your container’s version and a minimal test to establish the diagnosis. The issue is archived at issue #4538.

Prove the option works with a minimal page

Reduce the problem before testing production templates. Create two tiny files in a directory mounted into the runtime container:

cat > body.html <<'EOF'
<!doctype html>
<html><body><h1>Footer test</h1><p>Body content</p></body></html>
EOF

cat > footer.html <<'EOF'
<!doctype html>
<html><body style="font:10px sans-serif; text-align:center; margin:0">TEST FOOTER</body></html>
EOF

wkhtmltopdf
  --margin-bottom 20mm
  --footer-center 'TEXT FOOTER'
  body.html text-footer.pdf

wkhtmltopdf
  --margin-bottom 20mm
  --footer-html footer.html
  body.html html-footer.pdf

Inspect both PDFs. If the text footer appears but the HTML footer does not, the renderer is receiving the option and the remaining fault is the HTML resource or its dependencies. If neither appears, check the binary, argument forwarding and page geometry before touching your application template.

The usage manual documents --footer-left, --footer-center, --footer-right and --footer-html. Ensure your wrapper or library passes the option to wkhtmltopdf rather than silently dropping it. Also verify object scope: a cover object explicitly does not receive headers or footers. Apply footer settings to the page object that should display them, not to the cover.

Make the footer document and assets reachable from inside Docker

For --footer-html, the path or URL is resolved by the wkhtmltopdf process in the container. Check every dependency from that same environment:

  1. Confirm the file exists and is readable. Run ls -l /path/to/footer.html and, if necessary, id to see the effective user. A host path that is not mounted at the same container path cannot be opened.
  2. Resolve relative references. CSS, images and fonts referenced by relative URLs are relative to the footer document. Use container-correct paths or a reachable URL, and test each asset with the same network and credentials as the renderer.
  3. Check local-file policy. The documented default behavior restricts a local input from reading other local files unless access is permitted. Use the manual’s narrowly scoped allow mechanism for only the directories the footer needs. Avoid broadly enabling local access when rendering untrusted HTML.
  4. Check URL reachability. DNS, proxy settings, TLS trust, authentication and outbound network policy inside the container can differ from the host. A footer URL that loads in a browser on your laptop may fail in a minimal runtime image.

The command-line manual describes local-file controls and the allow option; the project’s security guidance also treats operating-system access controls as an additional boundary. Read the usage manual and the AppArmor and security guidance before granting access.

Check margins, spacing and page geometry

A footer can be rendered but positioned outside the printable page or clipped by an insufficient bottom margin. Start with an explicit bottom margin and a modest footer spacing value, then vary one setting at a time:

wkhtmltopdf
  --margin-bottom 25mm
  --footer-spacing 3
  --footer-center 'Page [page] of [topage]'
  body.html geometry-test.pdf

Open the generated PDF at 100% and inspect the bottom edge, paper size, footer text color and font size. Remove CSS such as fixed positioning, excessive height or a white-on-white color while testing. If increasing the bottom margin makes the footer appear, your original content or spacing consumed the available area. The official settings reference documents margin and spacing behavior at the library page-settings reference.

Remember that page objects, headers and footers have separate geometry from a cover. Test a normal page first; only then add a cover and table of contents to the real command.

Validate fonts and runtime libraries

Missing fonts often look like a missing footer: text may be blank, substituted, or laid out at an unexpected size. The project notes that fontconfig/freetype and actually installed fonts affect rendering, and that static Qt linkage does not eliminate every system dependency. Check the runtime image rather than copying assumptions from another distribution:

fc-match sans-serif 2>/dev/null || true
fc-list 2>/dev/null | head
ldd "$(command -v wkhtmltopdf)" 2>/dev/null | grep 'not found' || true

Install the font packages and libraries required by your chosen binary according to its distribution and architecture. Do not paste a generic Alpine or Debian package list without knowing the image provenance; an incorrect recipe can replace the binary or leave unresolved shared libraries. Capture stderr from the exact failing command so missing-library messages are not lost.

Compare Docker with the application’s real command

Once the minimal command works, run it through the same entry point, user, working directory, environment and volume mounts used by the application. Compare the complete command line (redacting secrets) with the successful shell test. Differences commonly include a wrapper omitting footer flags, a different current directory, a file mounted only in one service, or permissions that change under a non-root user.

Docker itself is not established as the root cause by the available documentation. Treat it as an environment boundary and isolate the changed variable:

  • same executable path and version;
  • same base image and CPU architecture;
  • same input and footer files;
  • same user, environment and network policy;
  • same output path and PDF viewer.

Build a reproducible case before changing packages

When the failure remains, reduce it to one body document, one footer and one command. Record:

  • the complete wkhtmltopdf --version output and executable path;
  • base image tag, libc family and architecture;
  • the exact command with credentials removed;
  • whether the footer is plain text or HTML;
  • footer, CSS, image and font paths or URLs;
  • stderr logs and the resulting PDF;
  • whether a normal page, cover or multiple page objects are involved.

The project’s support page requests version information and a detailed reproducible test case. Follow that format at wkhtmltopdf support instead of reporting only “it does not show.”

Common symptoms and targeted fixes

Symptom Likely boundary Action
Neither text nor HTML footer appears Binary, flags, object scope or geometry Verify patched-Qt build; run the plain --footer-center reproduction on a page object; add bottom margin.
Text footer works, HTML footer is blank File access or footer dependencies Check existence, permissions, relative URLs, local-file policy, fonts and network access inside the container.
Works on host, fails in container Different executable or runtime Compare version, path, image architecture, libraries, fonts, user and mounts from the production container.
Footer appears only after a larger margin Content is outside the page box Set an explicit bottom margin and reasonable footer spacing; inspect paper size and CSS height.
Footer missing only on a cover Unsupported object expectation Move the footer to a page object; covers do not receive headers or footers.
Text is empty or has wrong glyphs Fontconfig/freetype or missing font Use fc-match/fc-list, install the required fonts for the image, and rerender.
HTML footer loads inconsistently Network, cache or timing Use a local, minimal footer for diagnosis; then test URL reachability, credentials and asset loading from the container.

Or skip the browser setup

If your actual requirement is a clean image or PDF capture of a web page rather than wkhtmltopdf document assembly, ScreenshotNeo makes the capture a single request. It accepts cookie and consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
