If wkhtmltopdf renders text differently from your computer, first check the fonts and runtime environment where the command actually runs. The same HTML and CSS can produce different results when hosts have different installed fonts, fontconfig or FreeType configuration, package builds, or access to a webfont. Confirm those pieces before rewriting your CSS.

Why wkhtmltopdf renders fonts differently

wkhtmltopdf relies on fonts available to its runtime environment. Its official downloads page specifically identifies installed fonts and the fontconfig and freetype2 runtime configuration as dependencies. Different operating systems and distribution-specific builds can therefore render the same document differently. See the official downloads and platform guidance.

A CSS declaration names a font; it does not ensure that the renderer found that font, loaded the requested weight, or could access a referenced font file. When the intended face is unavailable, a fallback font may be used and change letter shapes, spacing, line breaks, or glyph coverage. An archived user report describes cross-platform differences involving @font-face and OTF, but it is not a controlled test and does not establish that OTF, or any other format, is universally unsupported. See issue #2884.

Establish exactly what is different

  1. Record the version: run wkhtmltopdf --version on both the working and failing systems and save the complete output.
  2. Record the environment: note the operating system and distribution, architecture, package source, and whether the build is patched. A matching version string does not prove the systems have identical fonts or runtime libraries.
  3. Identify the actual execution environment: if a container, serverless function, or worker runs the conversion, inspect that environment—not just your workstation.
  4. Keep the input constant: use the same HTML, CSS, font files, and command options while comparing systems. Change one variable at a time.

Distribution-specific builds exist because binaries depend on platform libraries; a generic binary may not match the host’s library environment. The project explains this in its platform guidance. A Linux package running in a container should be diagnosed against that container’s actual distribution and font configuration.

Check that the intended font is installed and discoverable

Verify the family and its styles

Check that the exact family named by your CSS is installed in the environment running wkhtmltopdf. Also verify the weight and style you request: installing a regular face does not necessarily provide the bold or italic face your stylesheet asks for. If the family is absent or not discoverable, install the properly licensed font or update the CSS to use a face that is available there.

Check fontconfig and its cache

Inspect the host’s fontconfig configuration and font search paths to establish where fonts are found. After adding fonts, refresh the fontconfig cache when appropriate for that distribution. The precise commands and paths depend on the operating system and packaging, so do not copy a path from a different deployment without verifying it locally.

Packaged deployments and AWS Lambda

For AWS Lambda packaging, the official project page demonstrates setting FONTCONFIG_PATH to the packaged font configuration directory and cautions that the environment variable must be set. Use the path from the matching packaging example rather than treating it as a universal Linux path; see the project’s deployment guidance.

Confirm that custom fonts load

For an @font-face rule, verify both the CSS URL and whether the wkhtmltopdf process can retrieve the font. A browser on your desktop may access a local or remote resource that the server-side renderer cannot.

  • Local HTML or local font files: check the file path, permissions for the user running wkhtmltopdf, and local-file access restrictions. Review the command’s local-file access controls and any allow-listing you use.
  • Remote HTML or webfonts: confirm the rendering host can resolve and reach the font URL, and check whether authentication, redirects, or network rules prevent retrieval.
  • Loading failures: review the official options for local-file access and resource-loading errors in the command-line usage documentation. A document may still be produced even when a resource is unavailable, so a successful output file alone does not prove the font loaded.

When local-file access is relevant, inspect the options for the specific command and build you use rather than enabling broad access without considering the files the conversion process can reach. The project’s documentation index links to its usage documentation and related guidance.

Reduce the problem to a minimal reproduction

  1. Create a small HTML file with one font family, one weight, and a short line of representative text. Include ordinary letters and the specific glyphs that appear wrong.
  2. Use the same renderer binary, host, and options as the failing conversion. If the problem occurs only in production, reproduce it inside the production container or worker.
  3. Render once with the font installed and discoverable, then—if safe and useful—compare with a fallback or missing-font case. This helps reveal whether the requested face is actually being used.
  4. Test local versus remote font resources separately, keeping the font file and other variables constant.
  5. Compare the intended build or package on each host. Change only one factor per render and retain the input and output for comparison.

This is a diagnostic procedure, not a claim that one specific test has identified a universal wkhtmltopdf defect. An archived report about Linux font rendering is useful as an example of a reported problem, but it does not establish a current reproduction for every build: issue #3585.

When to test another font format

Consider a format conversion only after confirming that the font is discoverable and its resource loads. Make a controlled test using another encoding of the same licensed font, and compare the affected glyphs and output file size on your target build. Archived issue comments include format-related workarounds, but they are anecdotal and do not prove that one format is best across operating systems or wkhtmltopdf builds. Preserve the original font and check its licence before conversion.

Choose a remedy based on the cause

Option Best fit Trade-off to check
Install and configure the font on the host The renderer is falling back because the requested family or style is missing or not discoverable. Every production environment must receive and configure the same font files.
Load a webfont with @font-face The document should carry or reference a font rather than depend solely on host-installed families. The rendering process still needs access to the actual font resource; a CSS rule by itself is not proof of successful loading.
Use a distribution-specific package The binary’s platform-library combination does not match the host. Package choice is tied to the operating system and distribution; validate the actual build and runtime dependencies.
Experiment with a font encoding Font discovery and loading have been checked, but a particular font/build pairing remains suspect. Reported workarounds are anecdotal; test the target build and respect the font licence.
Keep wkhtmltopdf or migrate You need to weigh a local fix against longer-term maintenance and validation of another renderer. The cited project sources establish legacy maintenance context, not a comparison of replacement products.

What the project’s maintenance status means

The official downloads page lists 0.12.6 as the stable series and gives its release date as June 11, 2020. The GitHub repository was archived read-only on January 2, 2023. These dates matter when planning maintenance: an upstream change may not be available for a long-standing issue. They do not prove that every font mismatch is unfixable on your host. Troubleshooting by symptom

The output uses a visibly different typeface

  • Check that the family in CSS is installed and discoverable in the conversion environment.
  • Check for a spelling or family-name mismatch and confirm the requested weight or style is available.
  • Render a minimal page with the same binary to distinguish font fallback from other document styles.

Only a custom webfont is wrong or missing

  • Verify the @font-face URL and that the rendering process can read or fetch the file.
  • Check local-file access settings for local documents, or network and authentication access for remote resources.
  • Use the command-line documentation to review resource-loading controls and errors: wkhtmltopdf usage options.

The problem appears only on Linux or in a container

  • Record distribution, architecture, package source, and complete version output on both systems.
  • Inspect fontconfig configuration, search paths, and installed fonts inside the container or worker.
  • Check that the chosen package fits the distribution’s runtime libraries rather than assuming another system’s binary will behave identically.

Changing the font file seems to help, but the result is inconsistent

Return to a minimal fixture and change only the font encoding. Repeat on the actual target build and treat a successful result as specific to that combination, not as a universal format rule. The archived cross-platform report is at issue #2884.

If your actual need is a screenshot of a web page rather than a PDF rendered by wkhtmltopdf, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server: one GET request with a URL returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It is not a fix for wkhtmltopdf’s font runtime, and it does not replace a wkhtmltopdf workflow that depends on its command-line PDF behavior.

Example cURL request (replace the URL with the page you want to capture):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options and response details. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month, with no card required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 guarantee identical fonts on Linux and macOS?

No. The same version string does not mean the hosts have identical installed fonts, fontconfig configuration, FreeType runtime, or package dependencies.

Does an @font-face declaration guarantee that wkhtmltopdf uses that font?

No. The renderer must be able to access and load the referenced font file, and the requested face must render correctly in that build.

Is OTF unsupported by wkhtmltopdf?

The archived cross-platform issue reports a particular OTF-related mismatch, but it does not establish a universal format limitation.
