If Snapchat shows a black preview, an endless spinner, or a camera-permission prompt, work through these fixes in order: verify Snapchat’s camera permission, check Android’s device-wide camera switch, close and reopen the app, restart the phone, test another network, update Snapchat and the operating system, clear Snapchat’s cache, and test the phone’s Camera app. Reinstall Snapchat only after confirming that Memories are backed up.

Identify what is failing

Symptom Most useful first checks
Black or blank preview Close other camera apps, restart Snapchat and the phone, clear the cache, then test the built-in Camera app.
Endless loading spinner or lenses that never appear Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, update Snapchat, clear its cache, and check Snapchat’s service status.
“Allow Camera Access” or a repeated permission prompt Review Snapchat’s camera permission and, on Android, the phone-wide Camera access control.
Only the front or rear camera fails Test that camera in the built-in Camera app and check for a case, lens protector, or physical damage.
Snapchat crashes when Camera opens Update the app and phone, restart, clear the cache, check free storage, and reinstall only after backing up Memories.
Camera works but Snaps do not send or load Treat this as a connectivity or Snapchat service problem rather than a camera-preview failure.

Try the low-risk fixes first

  1. Remove anything covering the lens and close apps that may be using the camera, such as FaceTime, Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, Zoom, or the phone’s Camera app.
  2. Force-close Snapchat and open it again.
  3. Restart the phone normally. A restart can release a camera session left stuck after switching apps; Snapchat also recommends powering the device off and on, with one support page suggesting it remain off for about a minute.
  4. Try Wi-Fi, then cellular data. Snapchat needs network access for authentication, lenses, and other content even though a basic camera preview may open offline.
  5. Install any available Snapchat update from the App Store or Google Play, then check for an iOS or Android update. Menu names and version numbers change, so use the latest versions offered on your device.

These steps follow Snapchat’s general troubleshooting guidance for features that do not load or respond: camera troubleshooting and app not working or crashing.

Check camera permissions

iPhone and iPad

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy & Security, then Camera.
  3. Turn on Snapchat.
  4. If video recording or video Snaps are affected, also review Microphone.
  5. Reopen Snapchat.

Apple documents these controls under Settings > Privacy & Security. If Snapchat is missing from the Camera list, open Snapchat and try the camera again, then restart and update the phone and app. As a later recovery step, Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy makes apps request permissions again. It resets privacy decisions across the device but does not delete app content; Apple explains the effect in its privacy and Location Services guidance.

Android

  1. Open Settings > Apps (tap See all apps if needed).
  2. Select Snapchat > Permissions > Camera.
  3. Choose Allow only while using the app, or the equivalent option shown on your phone.
  4. Allow Microphone too if video or audio is affected.
  5. Open Snapchat again.

Android’s app-permission path is documented by Google Android Help. On Android 12 and later, also swipe down twice to open Quick Settings and enable Camera access. A device-wide switch can block Snapchat even when its individual permission is allowed; see Google’s camera and microphone access instructions. Labels vary by Android version and manufacturer.

Clear Snapchat’s cache

Snapchat says clearing its cache can help troubleshoot problems and does not delete Memories, Snaps, or Chats.

From Snapchat on either platform

  1. Tap your Profile icon, then the gear for Settings.
  2. Open App & Privacy > My Privacy & Data.
  3. On iPhone, under Manage My Data, tap Clear Cache > Clear.
  4. On Android, tap Clear Data > Clear Cache, then confirm.

The exact wording can differ by Snapchat build. Snapchat’s current instructions are at How do I clear my cache on Snapchat?

Android system alternative

If Snapchat cannot stay open, use Settings > Apps > Snapchat > Storage or Storage & cache > Clear cache. Do not select Clear storage or Clear data as an equivalent: those options can sign you out and reset local app state.

Use the built-in Camera app as a diagnostic

Test both rear and front cameras in the phone’s standard Camera app, including photo and video modes and the flash when relevant.

  • The built-in Camera app also fails: the problem is device-level rather than Snapchat-only. Update the operating system, restart, remove interfering accessories, and contact the phone manufacturer or a reputable repair provider if it remains unusable. A native-camera failure is evidence of a broader issue, not conclusive proof of hardware damage.
  • The built-in Camera app works: focus on Snapchat permissions, its cache, updates, compatibility, and a possible temporary Snapchat bug.

Match the fix to the symptom

Black screen with no permission message

Close all other camera-using apps, force-close Snapchat, restart the phone, clear the cache, update both systems, and compare front and rear cameras in the native Camera app.

Front camera works but rear camera does not

Test the rear camera in the built-in app and inspect the case, lens protector, and phone for damage. Failure in every app warrants device support; failure only in Snapchat should be reported as a possible model-specific bug after updating or reinstalling.

Lenses or the loading spinner never finish

Switch networks, temporarily disable a VPN, restrictive DNS, or network filter if you use one, update Snapchat, clear its cache, and check the official Snapchat Status page. Network tools are possibilities, not confirmed causes.

Permission controls are missing or greyed out

A work or school management profile, parental control, or other device restriction may prevent changes. The administrator or parent may need to allow camera access.

Camera works but Snaps will not send or load

That is a related but separate problem. Check Wi-Fi and cellular data, update Snapchat, clear the cache, and restart the phone. Snapchat’s dedicated guidance is My Snaps won’t send or load.

Reinstall Snapchat only after protecting your account

  1. Open Snapchat and go to Profile > Settings.
  2. Confirm that Memories are fully backed up.
  3. Verify your password and access to any required two-factor verification method.
  4. Uninstall Snapchat, restart the phone, and reinstall it from the official App Store or Google Play.
  5. Grant camera and microphone permissions when prompted.

Snapchat warns users to confirm Memories backup before logging out, changing devices, or uninstalling. Reinstallation can repair a damaged installation or stuck permission state, but it will not fix an operating-system bug, incompatible device, outage, or hardware failure.

Check for an outage and report the bug

Check Snapchat Status when the camera and other features fail at the same time, friends report the same issue, or the problem began suddenly. Status is time-sensitive; a page showing “All Systems Operational” describes only the time it was checked.

If the camera still fails, open My Account > gear icon > Support and Safety > Bugs and Suggestions > Report a Bug. Include your phone model, iOS or Android version, Snapchat version, affected camera (front, rear, or both), exact message, whether the native Camera app works, start date, recent updates, and steps already tried. Snapchat documents this path in its troubleshooting guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Snapchat camera just loading?

A stuck app session, network-dependent Snapchat content, cache problem, permission block, compatibility issue, or service incident can all produce a spinner. Check permissions first, then restart, change networks, update, clear the cache, and check Snapchat Status.

Why does Snapchat keep asking for camera access?

Snapchat’s permission may be denied or stuck. Re-enable it in iPhone Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera or Android Settings > Apps > Snapchat > Permissions > Camera. Android users should also enable the device-wide Camera access switch.

Does clearing Snapchat’s cache delete Memories?

No. Snapchat states that clearing the cache does not delete Memories, Snaps, or Chats.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will reinstalling Snapchat delete my Memories?

Confirm that Memories are fully backed up before uninstalling. Also make sure you know your login details and can complete any required verification.

Is Snapchat down or is my phone the problem?

Check the official Snapchat Status page and compare Snapchat with the phone’s built-in Camera app. A native-camera failure points to a broader device issue; simultaneous Snapchat failures across users may indicate a service incident.
