First check Upwork’s official status page. If its services are operational, test a private browser window, another supported browser, a different network, and another device. Then follow the troubleshooting path for your specific problem: login, mobile app, Messages, proposals, payments, or the Desktop App and Time Tracker.
1. Check whether Upwork is down
Open status.upwork.com and inspect each component rather than relying on a single overall label:
- Login & Registration
- Messages & Notifications
- Finding Work
- Submitting Proposals
- Making Payments
- Getting Paid
- Hirings
- Team App and Work Diaries
Review current incidents and status history, then compare the affected component with what you see. An operational status does not rule out a regional routing problem, delayed status update, browser or extension conflict, account restriction, or a network that blocks only Upwork traffic.

2. Try these universal fixes
- Update your browser or app. Upwork’s guidance supports the latest two versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari.
- Open Upwork in a private or incognito window.
- Try another supported browser, then another device.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data, or use another trusted network.
- Temporarily test without a VPN or restrictive security extension, where permitted.
- Restart the device.
Use the sequence in Upwork’s technical troubleshooting guide. Do not begin by deleting app data or clearing Desktop App cache when time may not have uploaded.

3. If Upwork will not load in your browser
Use a clean browser test
If a private window works, an extension, stored cookie, cached session, or browser setting is the likely difference. Disable extensions one at a time, especially ad blockers, privacy or script blockers, password tools, and security software. Clear only Upwork’s site data after confirming that you know your login method; this can sign you out and remove local preferences.
Isolate the network
Try the same device on another network and a different device on the original network. If Upwork fails only on one Wi-Fi, corporate, school, or VPN connection while other sites work, investigate DNS, firewall filtering, or blocked persistent connections. Managed networks may require an administrator; random DNS changes are not a universal fix.

4. If the mobile app is not working
- Confirm that Wi-Fi or cellular data works for other services.
- Update Upwork from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
- Force-close the iOS app or force-stop the Android app.
- Reopen it and restart the phone or tablet.
- Test the other connection type and check Upwork’s status page.
- If notifications are missing, check operating-system notification permission, battery saver, data saver, airplane mode, and Do Not Disturb.
For login, loading, connection, crash, syncing, and notification problems, follow Upwork’s mobile-app guide. If the app remains broken but the website works, use a mobile browser while troubleshooting. Reinstall only after confirming that you can recover your credentials and have documented any unsynced information.
5. If you cannot log in
Recover access without making a second account
- Stop repeatedly guessing credentials, which can trigger additional security protection.
- Confirm the email address and check spam or junk folders.
- Use Upwork’s official password or account-recovery flow, including the security-answer process if requested.
- If you normally use Google, Apple, or another identity provider, use that same sign-in method.
- Try the website at Upwork.com instead of the app.
- If the message says blocked, follow the displayed recovery instructions.
Upwork specifically advises against creating another account to bypass a login problem; duplicate accounts can create further account issues. See Upwork’s login guidance.

Recognize account-status messages
An explicit “suspended,” “closed,” or reactivation message is not an ordinary browser fault. Use the stated reactivation or appeal route. A login failure across several devices and networks, especially alongside a security or identity-verification prompt, also points to an account process rather than a local technical fix.
6. If Upwork Messages is not working
Messages may fail while the rest of Upwork loads. Common symptoms include “Waiting for connection,” “Unable to load messages,” and “Unable to authenticate user.”

- Check the status page and reload the conversation.
- Try a private window and Chrome, Edge, or Firefox.
- Disable extensions temporarily.
- Test another device and network.
- Check whether a firewall, VPN, or security product blocks persistent or WebSocket connections.
Upwork documents these browser, firewall, and WebSocket possibilities in its Messages troubleshooting guide. Record the exact error and the affected conversation URL before contacting support.

- Quit the Upwork Desktop App completely and reopen it.
- Update the app and restart the computer.
- Switch networks if it shows offline or cannot upload.
- Verify that you are using the correct freelancer profile, especially if you also have a client profile.
- Confirm that the relevant contract is visible and available.
The app can retain some time during a minor connection interruption and later display a status such as “Online and uploading,” but cached time is not an unlimited substitute for a working connection.

Do not select Clear cache and restart casually. Upwork warns that it can remove preferences, saved credentials, settings, and unuploaded time cache. Preserve screenshots, memos, and any unuploaded-time details before reinstalling or deleting app data. Follow the Desktop App troubleshooting guide and time-tracker guidance.
8. If proposals, job search, payments, or hiring fail
Determine whether the failure affects all of Upwork or one workflow, job, contract, client, or account. Check whether the action works in another browser, on mobile, or on another network. Note whether a button is disabled, an error code appears, or the page simply keeps loading.
Eligibility, permissions, payment status, identity checks, browser state, and temporary feature incidents can produce similar symptoms. Do not assume a specific cause without the exact message. Check the status page, capture the affected page URL and time, and include those details in a support request.
9. What to send Upwork Support
Submit details through Upwork’s support request page. Logging in may provide faster, more personalized assistance, but the page also offers routes for users who cannot log in.
- What you were trying to do and what you expected
- What happened instead and the exact error text
- Full page URL, date, time, and time zone
- Screenshot or screen recording
- Browser name and version, operating system and version
- Phone or tablet model and Upwork app version
- Desktop App version for time-tracking problems
- Contract title or ID when time is affected
- Whether the issue occurs in another browser, device, or network
Upwork may additionally request browser information, a HAR file, mobile logs, or Desktop App logs; provide those only through the support process.
