When a Puppeteer screenshot shows flex items in different positions than expected, first make the capture reproducible: match the viewport in CSS pixels and the device scale factor, record the browser and operating-system setup, and inspect the flex layout Chrome actually computed. Do not start by changing CSS or enlarging the viewport for a full-page capture; either change can obscure the cause or create a new difference.

Why flexbox screenshots can differ

A screenshot is the rasterized result of a browser rendering a page under a particular set of conditions. A visual mismatch does not, by itself, prove that flexbox is broken or that a particular CSS declaration is wrong. The page may have been laid out at a different viewport size, rendered at a different device scale factor, or captured with different headless-screen or font-rendering conditions.

Start by comparing the setup that produced the expected image with the setup that produced the unexpected one. Record the Puppeteer and Chrome versions, operating system, headless or headful mode, viewport width and height, device scale factor, and whether the capture is viewport-sized or full-page. Puppeteer’s Viewport interface documentation defines viewport dimensions in CSS pixels and documents the device scale factor setting. These inputs make a useful comparison checklist; they do not guarantee identical rendering across different systems.

Make the viewport and scale factor explicit

Set the page viewport before navigating, and use the same width, height, and device scale factor as the reference capture. Puppeteer documents a default device scale factor of 1; a value of 0 resets it to the system default. For a comparison, do not rely on that system default: specify a concrete value.

Logitech Brio 101 Full HD 1080p Webcam for Streaming and Meetings - Black
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
  • Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();

  // Replace these with the exact reference-capture values.
  await page.setViewport({
    width: 1280,
    height: 800,
    deviceScaleFactor: 1,
  });

  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'viewport.png' });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

Install Puppeteer in the project before running the script, and save it as an ES module file such as capture.mjs. Run it with node capture.mjs. Replace the example URL and viewport values with the page and dimensions used in your test. If your application requires authentication, custom headers, or a different readiness condition, reproduce those conditions too; otherwise you may be comparing different page states rather than different layouts.

Keep other emulation settings consistent between captures. If the reference uses a mobile viewport, a particular device scale factor, or another emulated environment, reproducing only its width and height may not reproduce its rendering conditions. Record what each run actually uses instead of assuming that the same source code implies the same capture.

Check the headless screen separately

The page viewport and the browser’s headless screen are related but distinct settings. Puppeteer’s screen configuration guide says that headless mode has a default screen of 800×600 unless configured with --screen-info or --window-size. Chromium’s headless screen documentation describes the virtual screen’s scale factor and other properties.

If your capture environment configures either flag, write down the exact setting and make it deliberate. For example, a launch configuration may include --window-size=1280,800 when that matches the test environment:

This does not replace setting the page viewport: use both settings when both matter to the reproduction. Do not copy a --screen-info value from an unrelated setup; its format and screen properties need to match the environment you are trying to reproduce.

Inspect the computed flex layout in DevTools

Once the capture inputs match, inspect the page in Chrome DevTools rather than inferring layout rules from pixels alone. Chrome’s flexbox inspection guide describes identifying flex containers with the flex badge, viewing the layout overlay, and using the flexbox editor to inspect or adjust properties such as justify-content and align-items.

  1. Open the same page and state in Chrome DevTools, then select the element that should be the flex container.
  2. Use the flex badge or the Layout panel to display the flex overlay and confirm which element is the container.
  3. Inspect computed display, flex-direction, justify-content, align-items, and the gap values.
  4. Compare the container and item dimensions, item order, wrapping, and available space against the expected capture.
  5. Only change CSS after you have found a computed value or geometry that differs from the intended layout.

For a quick numerical comparison, evaluate the following in the page context after it has loaded. Set selector to the suspected container’s CSS selector. The output records the container rectangle and the properties most likely to explain alignment or wrapping differences:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
const selector = '.your-flex-container';
const result = await page.evaluate((selector) => {
  const container = document.querySelector(selector);
  if (!container) throw new Error(`No element matches ${selector}`);

  const style = getComputedStyle(container);
  const rect = container.getBoundingClientRect();
  const items = [...container.children].map((item) => {
    const itemStyle = getComputedStyle(item);
    const itemRect = item.getBoundingClientRect();
    return {
      tag: item.tagName,
      className: item.className,
      x: itemRect.x,
      y: itemRect.y,
      width: itemRect.width,
      height: itemRect.height,
      order: itemStyle.order,
    };
  });

  return {
    container: {
      x: rect.x,
      y: rect.y,
      width: rect.width,
      height: rect.height,
    },
    computed: {
      display: style.display,
      flexDirection: style.flexDirection,
      justifyContent: style.justifyContent,
      alignItems: style.alignItems,
      flexWrap: style.flexWrap,
      rowGap: style.rowGap,
      columnGap: style.columnGap,
    },
    items,
  };
}, selector);

console.log(JSON.stringify(result, null, 2));

Run the same inspection for both environments and compare the values. A different container width, an item wrapping onto another line, a different computed alignment value, or a changed item size points to a concrete difference to investigate. If these values match but the pixels still look different, check text and font rendering separately rather than assuming that flex positioning is responsible.

Handle full-page captures carefully

If the mismatch appears only in a full-page screenshot, compare a viewport screenshot with a full-page one before modifying the layout. Full-page capture behavior and viewport clipping have changed across Puppeteer versions. A Puppeteer discussion opened in 2019 describes clipping behavior and warns that expanding the viewport as a workaround can affect layouts that use vh, as well as fixed or sticky elements. That issue is useful context, not proof that every current full-page mismatch has the same cause.

  • Check whether the capture method clips content or changes the effective viewport dimensions.
  • Look for flex containers sized with viewport-relative units such as vh; changing viewport height can change the container’s available space.
  • Check fixed and sticky elements, whose positions may depend on the viewport or scroll state.
  • Verify how the installed Puppeteer version handles full-page capture before applying a workaround described for an older version.

Do not enlarge the viewport simply to make the page fit in one image unless that enlarged viewport is the desired rendering condition. If it is, treat it as a new test setup and compare against a reference captured under the same dimensions.

Separate font appearance from flex positioning

Text can make an alignment difference look larger than it is: different glyph widths or font metrics can change an item’s dimensions, which in turn changes the space flexbox distributes. Compare element rectangles and computed flex properties first. If those agree, inspect whether both captures use the same operating system, Chrome version, available fonts, and font-loading state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A suggestion to launch Chrome with --font-render-hinting=none appears in an older 2018 Puppeteer issue about inconsistent text rendering. It is a historical experiment from an issue discussion, not a current, general-purpose fix established by Puppeteer documentation. If you test it, compare before and after on the actual Chrome version, operating system, and fonts involved; do not assume it will correct flex alignment.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom Likely check Next step
All items shift or distribute differently Viewport width, container width, and computed justify-content Match viewport inputs, then compare the container’s computed style and rectangle.
Items move to a second row Container width, item widths, gaps, and flex-wrap Compare each item’s measured width and the container’s available width in both captures.
Vertical alignment changes Container height, align-items, and viewport-relative sizing Check computed alignment and whether a full-page workaround changed viewport height.
Only the full-page image differs Capture behavior, clipping, vh, fixed or sticky elements Compare viewport and full-page captures, and verify behavior for the installed Puppeteer version.
Boxes line up, but text looks shifted Font loading, font metrics, operating system, and rendering environment Separate text appearance from element geometry before changing flex CSS.
The result changes between machines Chrome/Puppeteer versions, operating system, device scale factor, headless mode, and screen setup Record these inputs and reproduce them in the comparison environment.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot without managing a local browser, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. It is useful for a repeatable capture, but it does not replace inspecting the computed flex layout when you are diagnosing why two Puppeteer environments differ.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Its cleanup accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server exposes screenshot tools to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Every feature is available on every plan. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free to try it.
