Most Playwright WebKit failures are fixed by installing the browser revision that matches your Playwright package, adding Linux dependencies when needed, and proving the environment with a tiny awaited smoke test. Run that test before changing application code: it tells you whether the failure occurs while starting WebKit, loading the page, rendering it, or writing the image.
1. Identify the failure stage
Separate the problem into four stages. A failure before page.goto() is a browser-process or environment problem. A navigation timeout or error is a page, network, or certificate problem. A successful navigation followed by a wrong image is usually a readiness, viewport, resource, or rendering issue. An error from page.screenshot() often points to the destination path or permissions.
- Launch: WebKit cannot start, exits immediately, or reports missing libraries.
- Navigation: the URL does not load, redirects unexpectedly, or never reaches the required state.
- Visual readiness: lazy content, fonts, animations, consent dialogs, or application data are not settled.
- Output: the directory is absent, unwritable, or the browser is closed before the asynchronous screenshot finishes.
2. Install the matching WebKit browser
Playwright uses its own tested Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit binaries. Installing the npm package alone does not guarantee that WebKit is present. From the same environment, user account, and working directory that runs your test, execute:

npx playwright install --with-deps webkit
After updating Playwright, check the package version and reinstall browsers so the downloaded revision matches it:
npx playwright --version
npx playwright install webkit
Do not switch to an unrelated system WebKit executable while diagnosing the issue. The BrowserType API exposes executablePath(), but Playwright is designed around its bundled browsers. First establish that the bundled binary launches.
Container and CI checks
- Install browsers during the image build or job, not only on your laptop.
- Run installation and tests as the same OS user; a browser cached for one user may be inaccessible to another.
- Confirm the working directory and filesystem are writable.
- Pin or otherwise control package updates so the package and browser revision cannot drift between jobs.
3. Run a minimal awaited smoke test
Create a clean directory, ensure its output location exists, and run this exact sequence. It removes test-runner fixtures and application code from the diagnosis.

const { webkit } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await webkit.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 } });
await page.goto('https://playwright.dev/', { waitUntil: 'load' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'artifacts/example.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
})();
Create artifacts first, or choose an existing writable directory. Every asynchronous operation is awaited, and the browser is closed only after the screenshot promise resolves.
Interpret the result
- Fails at launch: investigate the browser installation, permissions, executable startup, and OS libraries.
- Launches but fails at navigation: inspect the URL, network access, redirects, certificates, and timeout settings.
- Navigation succeeds but the image is blank or stale: wait for the page’s actual ready signal and check resources, viewport, and page lifecycle.
- Screenshot throws a path error: create the directory and verify write permission.
4. Fix Linux and CI launch failures
Linux headless execution normally needs no display server. Headed execution does: Microsoft’s CI guidance requires Xvfb on Linux agents. Install Xvfb using your distribution’s package manager, then invoke the job through it:
xvfb-run npx playwright test
Use headless mode for ordinary CI unless headed rendering is required. If a headed job still fails, capture the complete process output, especially the first missing-library or startup message rather than only the final timeout.

Useful launch diagnostics
DEBUG=pw:browser npx playwright test
DEBUG=pw:browser exposes browser-process startup and shutdown. It is the recommended first log for “Failed to launch browser.” Once launch works, inspect Playwright API sequencing:
DEBUG=pw:api npx playwright test
This shows navigation, waits, actions, and screenshot calls so you can find the first operation that diverges from expectation.
5. Make screenshots deterministic
A screenshot captures the page state that exists when the call resolves; it does not automatically mean that your application is visually ready. Wait for an application-specific selector or state instead of relying only on a fixed delay:

await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.locator('[data-test="dashboard-ready"]').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'artifacts/dashboard.png' });
For pages whose visual result depends on fonts, images, or animation, wait for those resources or disable animation in a test stylesheet. Check lazy-loaded content by scrolling or using the application’s ready signal. Keep viewport, device scale factor, operating system, Playwright version, WebKit revision, and available fonts consistent when comparing images. Differences limited to antialiasing or platform rendering may require recording those variables before changing visual thresholds.
Blank, partial, or old images
- Verify that
page.goto()completed and that the final URL is expected. - Wait for the selector that proves the app has rendered, not merely for a network event.
- Check console errors, failed requests, and authentication or test data.
- Use a deterministic viewport and device configuration.
- Confirm that the output file is new and that the process has permission to replace it.
6. Reproduce timing and shutdown problems locally
Playwright runs headless by default. Temporarily make the browser visible and slow operations to observe the failure:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →const browser = await webkit.launch({ headless: false, slowMo: 100 });
Headed mode can reveal a race involving menus, delayed rendering, or premature closure. It is not a substitute for fixing the wait condition. WebKit Inspector has an important limitation: launching it during execution can stop the Playwright script and reset preconfigured user-agent and device-emulation settings. Treat Inspector behavior as a debugging limitation, not proof that your test is repaired.

Use Trace Viewer for the first divergence
Enable tracing in the test runner and inspect the trace after the failure. DOM snapshots show what existed at each step; the action timeline, console, network, and error panels show when the page stopped matching expectations. Compare the trace’s final DOM and screenshot with the failing output to distinguish a page-state problem from file output or platform rendering.

8. Common errors and targeted fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| “Failed to launch browser” immediately | Missing WebKit revision, dependency, permission, or startup failure | Run npx playwright install webkit; on Linux use --with-deps; inspect DEBUG=pw:browser. |
| Headed CI job cannot start | No display server | Install Xvfb and run xvfb-run npx playwright test, or use headless mode. |
| Works locally, fails after package update | Package and browser revisions differ | Check npx playwright --version and reinstall browsers in the test environment. |
| Navigation succeeds, screenshot is blank | Capture occurs before app readiness, or resources/data failed | Wait for a real ready selector; inspect console and network; verify test data and viewport. |
| Screenshot path or permission error | Missing or unwritable destination | Create the directory, use an absolute or known-good path, and verify the job user can write it. |
| Browser closes during capture | Missing await or premature browser.close() |
Await navigation and screenshot, then close in a final cleanup path. |

FAQ
Should I use a system-installed WebKit?
No. Prove the bundled Playwright browser works first; unrelated executables add another variable.
Does headless mode guarantee identical screenshots?
No. Fonts, operating system rendering, device scale factor, viewport, data, and timing still affect pixels.
What should I save from a failed CI run?
Save the full browser/API debug log, trace, final URL, screenshot artifact, package version, WebKit revision, and environment details.
