PHP can orchestrate browser engines, but it does not render webpages itself. For Chrome-only captures, use Spatie Browsershot, a PHP wrapper around Puppeteer and headless Chrome. For Chromium, Firefox and WebKit coverage, evaluate Playwright PHP, whose project lists PHP 8.2 or newer and those three engines. Its documentation is still under review, so verify the current installation steps and API before standardizing on it.
This guide shows a repeatable workflow for viewport, element and full-page screenshots, explains what “cross-browser” can mean, and includes runnable PHP, cURL, Python and Node.js examples. It also separates engine differences from test-environment differences so visual comparisons remain useful.
What “cross-browser screenshots” means in PHP
Decide what you need to vary before selecting a library. Browser-engine coverage means running the same page through Chromium, Firefox and WebKit. Browser-version coverage means testing particular releases. Operating-system coverage adds another variable because fonts, graphics libraries and native controls can change pixels. The reviewed PHP projects establish engine scope, not a complete browser-version and operating-system matrix.
A screenshot comparison is meaningful only when each engine receives the same URL, viewport, device scale, authentication state, test data and page-ready condition. Even then, do not expect pixel-identical images: differences may be genuine engine rendering differences or a mismatch in setup.

Choose the PHP approach
| Option | Engine scope | Best fit | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spatie Browsershot | Headless Chrome through Puppeteer | A PHP application that needs concise Chrome screenshots or PDFs | Its documented backend does not establish Firefox or WebKit coverage. |
| Playwright PHP | Chromium, Firefox and WebKit listed by the project | Engine-focused testing driven from PHP | The project says its documentation is under review; confirm current APIs and browser-installation details. |
Also compare PHP/runtime compatibility, browser-binary installation in CI or production, waiting and readiness controls, full-page and element capture, image formats, device scale and maintenance maturity. The available documentation does not provide a directly comparable speed, reliability or cost benchmark.
When Browsershot is the right choice
Use Browsershot when Chrome is the target. Packagist lists Browsershot 5.4.0 (listed release date May 26, 2026) and a PHP ^8.2 requirement. The Spatie material reviewed here is on the v4 documentation path, so match the package version to its version-specific documentation when installing.
When to evaluate Playwright PHP
Use Playwright PHP when your acceptance criteria explicitly include Chromium, Firefox and WebKit. Treat its PHP 8.2 minimum and engine list as the project’s stated scope, not as proof that every option in the main Playwright documentation is already exposed by the PHP binding. Validate the current API, browser downloads and CI behavior first.

Install and capture a Chrome screenshot with Browsershot
Browsershot controls Puppeteer, which in turn controls a headless Chrome installation. Install the Composer package and the Node/Puppeteer runtime required by the package ecosystem, then make sure the executing user can launch Chrome in your environment.
- Confirm prerequisites. Use PHP 8.2 or newer for the current Packagist listing, Composer, Node.js, npm and a Chrome/Chromium binary compatible with your Puppeteer setup.
- Install the package. Add Browsershot with Composer, following the version-specific Spatie instructions for the Node and Puppeteer components.
- Capture a page. The documented compact path is:
<?php
use SpatieBrowsershotBrowsershot;
Browsershot::url('https://example.com')
->save('/tmp/example.png');
PNG is the documented default. JPEG is available when you prefer a smaller, lossy file. Use PNG for pixel-oriented regression comparisons unless your own pipeline has a different requirement.

- 100HZ FAST REFRESH RATE: 100Hz brings your favorite movies and video games to life. Stream, binge, and play effortlessly
- SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
Set a deterministic viewport
<?php
use SpatieBrowsershotBrowsershot;
Browsershot::url('https://example.com')
->windowSize(1440, 900)
->save('/tmp/example-1440x900.png');
Keep dimensions and device scale consistent across runs. If your installed Browsershot version exposes a different device or scale method, use that version’s documentation rather than assuming names from another release.
Capture the full scrollable page
<?php
use SpatieBrowsershotBrowsershot;
Browsershot::url('https://example.com')
->fullPage()
->save('/tmp/example-full.png');
Full-page capture is different from the visible viewport: the browser expands the shot to include the page’s scrollable content. Long pages with sticky headers, infinite scrolling or lazy images need special care. Ensure content has loaded before the capture and check that your application does not require scrolling events to fetch more data.

Initial navigation is not always the same as visual readiness. Browsershot documents delayed capture and waiting for selectors or JavaScript conditions. Prefer a meaningful application selector, such as a chart container or finished-results marker, over an arbitrary delay. A delay can be useful for a known animation, but it is less robust when network speed changes.
<?php
use SpatieBrowsershotBrowsershot;
Browsershot::url('https://example.com/dashboard')
->windowSize(1440, 900)
->waitForSelector('#report-ready')
->save('/tmp/report.png');
Use the exact wait method supported by your installed Browsershot version. For JavaScript-heavy pages, also stabilize fonts, animations, rotating content, clocks, advertisements and other time-sensitive elements in the test environment.
Capture one element
When the requirement is a component rather than a page, select the element using the selector-capture method documented for your Browsershot release. Verify the selector exists in the final DOM and that its dimensions are not dependent on an unfinished layout.
Run the same capture across engines with Playwright PHP
The Playwright PHP project describes a typed PHP API for Chromium, Firefox and WebKit and identifies PHP 8.2 as its minimum. Because that project says its documentation is still under review, treat the following as an implementation pattern: check the project’s current package names, browser-install command and method signatures before copying it into production.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
- Install the current Playwright PHP package according to the project’s instructions.
- Install the browser binaries for the engines you intend to run.
- Launch each engine, create a context with the same viewport and device scale, navigate to the same URL, wait for the same readiness condition, and save a screenshot.
- Close the page, context and browser in a finally block so failed captures do not leave processes running.
<?php
// Illustrative structure: verify names against the current Playwright PHP docs.
$engines = ['chromium', 'firefox', 'webkit'];
$viewport = ['width' => 1440, 'height' => 900];
foreach ($engines as $engineName) {
$browser = null;
try {
// Launch the selected engine using the current Playwright PHP API.
// $browser = $playwright->$engineName()->launch(['headless' => true]);
// $context = $browser->newContext(['viewport' => $viewport]);
// $page = $context->newPage();
// $page->goto('https://example.com', ['waitUntil' => 'networkidle']);
// $page->waitForSelector('#report-ready');
// $page->screenshot(['path' => "shots/{$engineName}.png", 'fullPage' => true]);
} finally {
// Close page/context/browser with the methods exposed by your version.
}
}
The comments are intentional: the project’s under-review documentation means you should not assume the JavaScript API’s exact method names are available in PHP. The workflow—identical state, dimensions, waits and output naming—is the part that transfers directly.
Viewport, element or full page
Choose one scope per test:
- Viewport: the currently visible layout at fixed width and height.
- Element: a component selected by CSS, useful for isolated visual tests.
- Full page: the complete scrollable document, useful for long-form pages.
Confirm that the PHP binding supports the selected scope and format. The general Playwright page API documents PNG, JPEG and WebP; support in your installed PHP binding must be checked.
Make screenshots repeatable
- Fix geometry: use the same viewport width, height and device scale for every engine.
- Control fonts: install the same intended fonts in each runner and wait for web fonts before capture.
- Freeze motion: disable CSS transitions, carousels and video where visual comparison requires a stable frame.
- Control data: use deterministic fixtures rather than live timestamps, rotating recommendations or changing advertisements.
- Wait for content: wait for an app-specific selector or state after JavaScript and lazy loading finish.
- Keep identity isolated: use a dedicated test account, cookies and headers; never place production credentials or private data in artifacts.
- Name artifacts clearly: include engine, viewport, device scale, page and commit or test identifier.
- Compare like with like: inspect each engine only after confirming that navigation, authentication and readiness all succeeded.
Output formats and visual fidelity
Browsershot documents PNG by default and JPEG as an option. The general Playwright API documents PNG, JPEG and WebP, but the PHP project may expose a narrower set. PNG avoids additional lossy compression and is a sensible default for pixel comparison; JPEG or WebP can reduce storage when exact pixel fidelity is not the goal. This is an engineering trade-off, not a benchmark claim.
Common failures and fixes
“Browser executable not found”
Cause: Chrome or an engine binary is absent, installed for another user, or not on the expected path. Fix: install the browser binaries required by your package, configure the executable path supported by your version, and verify that the same user runs locally and in CI.
The screenshot is blank or cuts off content
Cause: capture occurred before the app rendered, a lazy-loaded section was never triggered, or full-page layout depends on scrolling. Fix: wait for a meaningful selector or application-ready condition, test full-page mode separately, and make lazy content deterministic.

Cookie banner, modal or chat widget changes every image
Cause: a consent state or third-party widget is part of the page. Fix: seed a controlled consent cookie where appropriate, hide nonessential selectors in a test-only environment, or remove the widget from the fixture. Do not silently compare one engine with a banner and another without it.
Fonts or text wrap differently
Cause: different installed fonts, font-loading timing, viewport dimensions or engine layout behavior. Fix: standardize fonts and dimensions, wait for font readiness, and treat legitimate engine differences as separate baselines rather than forcing one image to match all engines.
Timeouts and intermittent navigation
Cause: third-party requests, slow test data, bot defenses or an overly strict timeout. Fix: reduce external dependencies, use stable fixtures, wait for the page state you need instead of an unnecessarily broad network condition, and capture diagnostic logs. A longer timeout cannot fix a page that never reaches the required state.

Works locally but fails in CI
Cause: missing system libraries, different fonts, sandbox restrictions, CPU limits or environment variables. Fix: pin the runtime image, install the same browser and fonts, record engine versions, and run the capture under the same user and permissions used by the CI job.

Each engine launch has startup overhead. Reuse a browser process where your PHP integration safely permits it, while creating isolated contexts or sessions for separate tests. Parallel workers can shorten a suite but increase CPU, memory and contention; measure your own CI workload rather than assuming one engine is faster.
Cache only immutable test assets or deterministic pages. A screenshot is not reliable evidence if its source data, fonts or third-party responses change between runs. Retain failed artifacts and the URL, engine, viewport, scale, wait condition and runtime version so a visual difference can be reproduced.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF, so you do not have to install browser binaries in your PHP host. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed.
It offers full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element shots, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PDF paper and margin controls, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture, selector hiding, selector/delay/network-idle waits, ad/tracker/request/resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work to ease migration.
The MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Recommended decision path
- Choose the engines your requirement actually names.
- For Chrome-only work, implement Browsershot and pin its PHP, Node, Puppeteer and Chrome versions.
- For Chromium, Firefox and WebKit, validate the current Playwright PHP package and documentation before building the suite.
- Standardize viewport, device scale, fonts, data, waits and artifact naming.
- Keep separate baselines per engine and investigate environment mismatches before treating a difference as a browser defect.
- Use an API such as ScreenshotNeo when installing and maintaining browser infrastructure is not part of the application’s value.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can PHP take a screenshot in Firefox and Safari?
PHP can control Firefox through a PHP integration that supports the Firefox engine. The Playwright PHP project lists WebKit, which is an engine rather than a guarantee of a particular Safari version or operating-system matrix; verify the exact target you need.
Does Browsershot support browsers other than Chrome?
Its documented backend is Puppeteer controlling headless Chrome. Its screenshot features do not establish Firefox or WebKit support.
Should visual tests use PNG or JPEG?
Use PNG when pixel-level comparison matters. JPEG can reduce file size but introduces lossy compression; choose it only when that trade-off is acceptable.
Is a full-page screenshot the same as a viewport screenshot?
No. A viewport shot captures the visible browser area, while full-page mode includes the page’s scrollable content.
