To diagnose Puppeteer-Sharp failures, first identify which layer produced the signal: navigation, page JavaScript, the page process, or a network request. Catch navigation exceptions from GoToAsync, subscribe to PageError for uncaught JavaScript exceptions, use Error for a crashed page, and inspect both RequestFailed and response status codes for network problems. A 404 is an HTTP response, not a failed request.
Start by identifying the failure layer
Browser automation can surface several different kinds of problems during one visit. A navigation may time out while the page also logs a warning; an image request may fail while the main document loads; or JavaScript may throw after navigation succeeds. Treating every signal as the same kind of “page error” makes logs noisy and can lead to the wrong recovery action.
| Signal | What it means | What to record or inspect |
|---|---|---|
GoToAsync throws |
The navigation operation encountered a problem, such as a timeout, SSL error, invalid URL, or unreachable or nonresponsive server. | Exception details and the target URL; separately inspect whether a main-resource response was returned. |
PageError |
An uncaught exception happened within page JavaScript. | Message and raw Error; the raw value is not guaranteed to be a conventional .NET exception. |
Console |
The page emitted console output, including ordinary console calls, warnings, or page-error-related messages. | Message text and context. Do not assume every console event is fatal. |
Error |
The page crashed. | Crash details and page or navigation context. |
RequestFailed |
A network request failed at the request lifecycle level, for example because of a timeout. | Request URL and failure text. |
Response with status 400 or higher |
The server returned an HTTP error status. The request can still complete normally. | Response status and URL. |
Puppeteer-Sharp describes itself as a .NET port of the official Node.js Puppeteer API. It has multiple package variants, and event argument details can vary by release. Check the API documentation matching the package version in your project before relying on a member name or copying sample code.
Catch navigation failures separately
GoToAsync is an operation, not a general-purpose subscription for every issue that occurs after the page starts running. Its documentation describes navigation as either throwing or returning a main-resource response. Handle those outcomes as separate diagnostic paths: catch a thrown navigation exception, and, when a response is returned, inspect its status as appropriate.

Typical causes of a thrown navigation failure include an invalid URL, SSL trouble, a navigation timeout, or a server that cannot be reached or does not respond. A successful navigation call does not prove that every script, image, or later request succeeded, nor does it prove that the application rendered correctly.
- Log the target URL and exception when
GoToAsyncthrows. - When a response is returned, record its status and URL if HTTP status matters to your workflow.
- Use page and request events to diagnose failures that happen within or after an otherwise successful navigation.
Use PageError for uncaught JavaScript exceptions
PageError is the event for an uncaught exception inside the page. Its event arguments expose Message and a raw Error value. Preserve both where possible: the message is useful for human-readable logs, while the raw value may carry additional information.
Do not assume Error is always a conventional .NET exception or contains a stack trace. Page code can throw a primitive or another value, and the raw value may be a string, another object, or null. Logging code should therefore tolerate null and unexpected types rather than casting blindly.

Read Console output as diagnostics, not a failure verdict
Console reports calls to the page’s console API and can also be emitted for page errors or warnings. It is useful when diagnosing application behavior, but it is broader than a fatal-error event. A message logged with console.info, for example, should not automatically trigger the same alert or retry policy as an uncaught exception.

Capture the console message and, if your package exposes additional message metadata that you need, verify those members in the version-specific API reference. Decide in your own logging or monitoring layer which message types warrant escalation.
Keep page crashes distinct from page exceptions
The page’s Error event is documented as the signal raised when the page crashes. It is distinct from PageError, which signals an uncaught exception within the page. A JavaScript exception may indicate an application bug while the page continues to run; a crash is a different condition and should be diagnosed and handled accordingly.
Distinguish failed requests from HTTP error responses
RequestFailed is for a request that fails in the network request lifecycle, such as a timeout. The request interface exposes failure text that can help explain what happened. Request lifecycle events generally move through request, response, and request-finished; a redirect finishes one request and initiates another.

Illustrative C# logging pattern
The following combines the major signals in one place. It is an illustrative pattern, not a tested snippet: confirm event argument member names and logging overloads against the Puppeteer-Sharp package version used by your project.
page.Console += (_, e) =>
logger.LogInformation("Browser console: {Message}", e.Message.Text);
page.PageError += (_, e) =>
logger.LogError("Uncaught page exception: {Message}; raw error: {Error}",
e.Message, e.Error);
page.Error += (_, e) =>
logger.LogError(e.Error, "Page crashed");
page.RequestFailed += (_, e) =>
logger.LogWarning("Request failed: {Url}; {Failure}",
e.Request.Url, e.Request.FailureText);
page.Response += (_, e) =>
{
if (e.Response.Status >= 400)
logger.LogWarning("HTTP error response: {Status} {Url}",
e.Response.Status, e.Response.Url);
};
Attach handlers before navigating if you need to observe events that may occur during initial page loading. Keep the handlers focused on recording diagnostics; make retry or alert decisions using the signal’s meaning rather than treating all events as equivalent.
Troubleshoot common error-reporting gaps
“RequestFailed did not report a 404”
That is expected: a 404 is an HTTP response and can complete successfully at the request lifecycle level. Inspect response status codes, including the main navigation response and any subresource responses relevant to your task.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →“The page is broken, but PageError did not fire”
PageError concerns uncaught JavaScript exceptions. A server response with an error status, a blocked request, an application-rendering defect that does not throw, or a navigation failure may require other signals. Check the navigation result, console messages, response statuses, and request failures independently.

“Console reports an error, but the run should not fail”
Console output includes a range of page messages and warnings. Log it for context, then apply a policy that distinguishes message types and severity instead of failing every run whenever a console event occurs.
“The exception has no useful .NET stack trace”
The raw page error is not guaranteed to be a .NET exception. Preserve the supplied message and raw value without assuming a particular CLR type; consult the matching package API documentation for the exact event argument shape.
“A resource timed out, but navigation completed”
The main document can load even when a later or secondary request fails. Use RequestFailed and record its URL and failure text rather than inferring that every request succeeded from the navigation result.

If your goal is to capture a clean screenshot rather than build a browser-automation pipeline, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its API can accept consent banners as a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers indicating the page verdict and whether the shot was billed. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Puppeteer-Sharp event reports an uncaught JavaScript exception?
Use PageError; it is distinct from console output and the page-crash Error event.
Does RequestFailed catch HTTP 404 and 503 responses?
No. Those are HTTP responses, so inspect response status codes as well as subscribing to RequestFailed.
Can I assume PageErrorEventArgs.Error is a .NET exception?
No. It may be a string, another object, or null, so preserve it without assuming a CLR exception type.
