In Windows 11, “ghost box” is an informal description of a transparent, blank, or invisible rectangle near the taskbar, Search button, or another part of the desktop. It is not one officially named fault: the cause may be a stale Windows shell window, a graphics-driver rendering error, a third-party overlay, or—less often—a monitor or cable problem.
Start with the least disruptive fix: restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager. If the rectangle remains, reset the graphics driver with Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B, then investigate drivers, Search and Widgets behavior, overlays, and hardware.
What the ghost box can look like
- A transparent rectangle above or beside the taskbar.
- A white, gray, or black empty box.
- An invisible region that blocks mouse clicks.
- A box that appears after hovering over Search, Widgets, or the taskbar.
- An artifact that disappears temporarily when Explorer is restarted.
- A rectangle that stays over games or other applications, follows you across virtual desktops, or appears on only one monitor.
These appearances do not prove a single cause. Microsoft Q&A and Community reports associate some cases with Search, taskbar, or Widgets rendering, but those reports are user experiences rather than confirmation that every current Windows 11 build has one known bug: Search-related report, ghost-window report, and taskbar-area discussion.
Is a ghost box dangerous?
Usually not. A stale taskbar window or graphics artifact is generally a display problem, not evidence of malware or a failing hard drive. Treat it as a broader graphics or hardware fault when it appears before Windows loads, inside BIOS/UEFI, or in the monitor’s own on-screen menu, or when it comes with colored lines, severe flickering, crashes, overheating, or widespread corruption.

If it appears only inside one browser, game, or other application, troubleshoot that application or its overlay first. Remote Desktop, virtual machines, and screen-sharing software can also create their own artifacts.
Quick diagnosis before changing settings
- Move the pointer away from Search, Widgets, and the taskbar, then press Esc.
- Open and close another window, and move a window over the rectangle.
- Take a screenshot. If the box appears in the image, Windows or another program is rendering it. If it is visible on the physical display but absent from screenshots, investigate the monitor, cable, GPU output, or panel.
- Note whether it blocks clicks, appears after Search hover, affects one monitor, or remains over other applications.
| Symptom | Likely category | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Appears after hovering over Search | Search/taskbar shell artifact | Restart Explorer; adjust Search hover or recent-search behavior |
| Sits above the taskbar and blocks clicks | Invisible shell hitbox | Restart Explorer |
| Display also blinks or flickers | Graphics driver or incompatible app | Reset the graphics driver |
| Appears only inside a game or browser | Application or overlay | Disable that application’s overlay |
| Appears in screenshots | Software-rendered artifact | Isolate Explorer, driver, and overlay causes |
| Absent from screenshots | Monitor, cable, GPU output, or panel | Test another cable, port, or display |
| Visible before Windows starts | Hardware, firmware, or display path | Begin hardware diagnosis |
| Disappears in Safe Mode | Startup program or nonessential driver | Disable startup items and overlays |
1. Restart Windows Explorer
This is the best first fix when the box belongs to the desktop shell. Microsoft includes restarting Explorer in its Windows display troubleshooting guidance: Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting steps.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select More details if Task Manager is in compact view.
- Open the Processes list.
- Find Windows Explorer, right-click it, and choose Restart.
The taskbar and desktop may vanish briefly, and File Explorer windows may refresh. If the rectangle was a stale shell or taskbar window, it should disappear. Restarting Explorer reloads the desktop shell; it does not repair a faulty display driver.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Windows Explorer is not listed, choose Run new task in Task Manager, type explorer.exe, and press Enter.

2. Reset the graphics driver
Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. The screen may blink or go black momentarily and you may hear a short beep; open windows should remain open. This resets the graphics driver in place—it does not reinstall it. Microsoft recommends the shortcut for certain blank-screen and flickering situations: blank-screen guidance and flicker guidance.
If the box returns, the reset was temporary. Continue with driver and application checks rather than repeatedly pressing the shortcut.
3. Restart Windows
Use Start > Power > Restart. A full restart reloads the shell and graphics stack more completely than restarting Explorer alone. It is particularly appropriate when the box returns immediately, Search or the taskbar is malfunctioning, the display is flickering, or Windows or a graphics driver was recently updated.
4. Update or roll back the display driver
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics adapter and choose Update driver.
- If the problem began immediately after an update, open Properties > Driver and use Roll Back Driver when available.
When Windows Update does not offer a suitable package, use the computer manufacturer’s support page or the GPU maker’s official driver page. Avoid generic “driver updater” utilities. Microsoft identifies display-driver and incompatible-application problems as common causes of flicker and recommends updating or rolling back when the timing points to a driver change: Microsoft’s flicker troubleshooting.

5. Adjust Search and Widgets behavior
If the rectangle appears after hovering over or opening Search, open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar. Windows 11 labels differ by build and update channel, so look for controls concerning:
- Search on the taskbar or opening Search on hover.
- Recent searches.
- Search highlights.
Choose a less interactive Search presentation or disable hover/recent-search behavior when those options are offered. These settings vary across Windows 11 releases; do not assume an older label exists on every PC.
If Widgets appears to trigger the rectangle, temporarily turn off Widgets in Settings > Personalization > Taskbar, restart Explorer, and test again. Community reports describe similar invisible taskbar hitboxes, but they do not establish that Widgets causes every case: Microsoft Q&A report.

- Xbox Game Bar.
- NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience, AMD Adrenalin, and Intel graphics overlays.
- Discord and Steam overlays.
- Screen recorders, remote-desktop tools, and capture utilities.
- Window-management or taskbar-customization programs.
- Browser picture-in-picture or mini-player windows.
- Accessibility magnifiers and similar tools.
Restart Explorer after each change. This isolates the trigger; it does not by itself prove a particular vendor is responsible. Advanced users can use Microsoft Sysinternals Process Explorer to inspect which process owns a suspicious window, but most cases do not require it.
7. Test Safe Mode or a clean boot
Use Safe Mode or a clean boot when the box returns after every normal restart, began after installing customization or overlay software, or is accompanied by related artifacts in several programs. Microsoft lists Safe Mode among its recovery paths for persistent display problems: Microsoft display troubleshooting.
- Gone in Safe Mode: a startup application, service, shell extension, or nonessential driver is likely.
- Still present in Safe Mode: Windows itself, the display driver, monitor, cable, or GPU hardware becomes more likely.
- Only one user account is affected: investigate that account’s shell or taskbar configuration.
8. Install updates and document the problem
Install pending Windows updates, especially when the issue clearly involves Search, the taskbar, or Widgets. If it persists, press Windows + R, type winver, and record the Windows version and build. Also record the GPU model and driver version, whether the rectangle appears in screenshots, whether it blocks clicks, and whether restarting Explorer clears it. Submit those details through the Feedback Hub or to the computer or GPU manufacturer.
Historical community posts do not establish that a particular Windows 11 build has an active, universally acknowledged ghost-box bug. Report the reproducible symptoms instead of assuming a version-wide defect.
When to check the monitor, cable, or GPU
Stop treating the issue as a Windows shell problem when the mark remains in the monitor’s own menu, appears before Windows starts, follows a particular display or cable, or is absent from screenshots. Test another cable, port, refresh rate, and display, then connect the suspect monitor to another computer if possible. Seek hardware service when the artifact persists across those tests or is accompanied by colored lines, crashes, overheating, or severe flicker.
Quick Recap
What not to do
- Do not begin with registry edits for Search or taskbar behavior; they are version-sensitive and unnecessary for the common symptom.
- Do not use registry cleaners or paid driver-updater programs.
- Do not assume the newest driver is always best; roll back when the problem started after an update.
- Do not mistake restarting Explorer for reinstalling or repairing a graphics driver.
