In iOS 16, Depth Effect lets an eligible Lock Screen photo’s subject appear in front of the clock. To try it, customize a photo Lock Screen, open More, and tap Depth Effect. The option depends on the photo, and iOS 16 does not let you use the effect on a Lock Screen that has widgets.
What Depth Effect does in iOS 16
Depth Effect creates a layered Lock Screen: part of the photo’s recognizable subject sits in front of the time, as if the clock were behind it. Apple introduced the feature with the redesigned Lock Screen in iOS 16, released on September 12, 2022. It is a wallpaper composition, not a camera blur, animated wallpaper, or genuine 3D movement. Apple’s iOS 16 announcement describes the photo subject appearing in front of the time.
Turn on Depth Effect
You can start from the Lock Screen gallery or from Settings. Button placement and available options can vary with the wallpaper and software version; the steps below describe the iOS 16 feature.

From the Lock Screen
- Wake the iPhone, then touch and hold the Lock Screen to open the wallpaper gallery.
- Tap Customize beneath an existing Lock Screen, or tap Add New to make one.
- Choose Photos and select an image. Reposition or zoom it so the subject reaches into the clock area.
- Tap the More button in the lower-right corner, then tap Depth Effect if it is available.
- Tap Add or Done to save. Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair or customize the Home Screen separately.
From Settings
- Open Settings and tap Wallpaper.
- Tap Add New Wallpaper, then Photos, and select an image.
- Adjust the crop, open More, and enable Depth Effect if the option is offered.
- Tap Add and choose how to apply the wallpaper.

Choose and position a photo
iOS decides whether a particular image can be layered; a photo containing a person, pet, or other obvious subject is not automatically eligible. Clear separation between subject and background, good lighting, and a crop that leaves room for the clock can make an image a better candidate, but these are practical guidelines, not guarantees or fixed Apple requirements. Apple says the effect is available only for photos that support layering.
- Look for one readily identifiable foreground subject with a clear outline against its background.
- Start with the default crop. Pinch outward to zoom in or inward to zoom out, and drag with two fingers to reposition the image.
- Move a subject that sits too low upward into the clock area. Leave enough of the time visible to read it.
- If the subject fills too much of the screen, zoom out or choose another crop. If changing the crop makes the effect disappear, return to a less aggressive framing.
Downloaded wallpaper images work the same way as photos from your library: save one to Photos and select it. A label on a website or in an app cannot force iOS to accept an image, because the system evaluates the actual photo.

Why Depth Effect is missing or unavailable
Check the common causes in this order; photo eligibility and widgets are especially worth checking first.

In the original iOS 16 implementation, widgets and Depth Effect cannot be used together. Remove all widgets, including those above or below the clock, and check More again. This limitation is described in Apple Support Community guidance; treat it as specific to iOS 16 rather than a rule for every later release.
- Try a different image. The photo may not support layering even if its subject looks suitable. Apple’s Lock Screen guide notes that Depth Effect is not available for every photo.
- Reset the crop. Return to the default framing, then reposition the photo more gently. A subject that is too far from the clock, too large, or obscuring too much of it may prevent a useful layered result.
- Confirm you are editing the Lock Screen. The subject-over-clock composition is a Lock Screen feature, not a Home Screen effect. The Home Screen can be customized separately when you save a wallpaper pair.
- Check iPhone and software support. The phone must run iOS 16 or later, and Apple notes that features can vary by supported iPhone model. The cited Apple materials do not establish a complete historical model list for this effect, so do not assume every iOS 16-capable phone supports it.
- Make a fresh Lock Screen. If the control remains unexpectedly unavailable after changing the photo and crop, create a new photo Lock Screen and check again. Restarting the iPhone is a final general troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed Apple-documented fix.
Choose between Depth Effect and widgets
For iOS 16, this is a trade-off rather than a setting that combines both features:

Turn Depth Effect off
- Touch and hold the Lock Screen, then tap Customize.
- Select the Lock Screen you want to edit and tap More.
- Tap Depth Effect to turn it off, then tap Done.
Depth Effect is not the newer Spatial Scene feature
Apple’s newer wallpaper instructions also describe Spatial Scene, a separate 3D photo-wallpaper feature available on newer software and hardware. It is not the name for iOS 16’s subject-over-clock layering. If you are following iOS 16 steps, look for Depth Effect; Apple’s current overview distinguishes newer spatial wallpapers in its wallpaper guidance.
