Use two separate channels: Selenium RemoteWebDriver (or Grid) carries automation commands, while VNC and noVNC carry the browser’s visible desktop. Run the browser in a VNC-capable desktop, publish noVNC through an access-controlled WebSocket-capable endpoint, and connect an authorized viewer in a browser. RemoteWebDriver alone does not stream screen pixels, and WebDriver BiDi’s WebSocket is for automation events, not video.
The two-channel design
Selenium’s remote architecture separates the machine running your test code from the machine running the browser. Selenium describes the former as the client computer and the latter as the remote computer or end node. Your test client connects to a Grid URL (including its port) and sends WebDriver commands through RemoteWebDriver Selenium Remote WebDriver documentation.
A live display is a different path. The remote browser must run inside a desktop session that has a VNC server. A browser-based VNC client such as noVNC then renders that desktop. Docker Selenium packages this arrangement and documents a noVNC endpoint on port 7900 Docker Selenium project.
| Channel | Provides | Typical endpoint | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automation | WebDriver commands and responses | Grid URL, commonly port 4444 in Docker examples | Starting sessions, clicking, typing and assertions |
| Visual | Interactive desktop pixels through VNC/noVNC | noVNC web page, commonly port 7900 in Docker examples | Watching or interacting with a running browser |
| Recording | Saved video artifact, documented as MP4 by Docker Selenium | Video sidecar output | Reviewing a run after it ends |
Publishing a port does not by itself make a safe internet service. Routing, authentication, TLS, firewall rules and WebSocket forwarding are deployment decisions that you must design for your environment.

Docker Selenium: the quickest self-hosted live view
1. Choose a current image
Use a current standalone or Grid image tag from the Docker Selenium project. Version tags and defaults change, so do not copy an old tag blindly. A standalone container is simplest for one browser; a Hub/Node deployment is appropriate when you need multiple nodes.
2. Start a standalone browser with Grid and noVNC ports
The project’s standalone Chrome examples publish the Grid endpoint and the noVNC endpoint like this:
docker run -d --name selenium-chrome
--shm-size="2g"
-p 4444:4444
-p 7900:7900
selenium/standalone-chrome:<current-tag>
The mappings are an example, not an internet-facing security recipe. The exact image, browser, shared-memory setting and network layout depend on the release you select.

Point the client at the Grid URL and provide browser options. This Python example opens a page, waits briefly, and then leaves the session available long enough for an observer to see it. In real tests, replace the delay with your own synchronization.
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.options import Options
import time
options = Options()
options.add_argument("--window-size=1440,1000")
driver = webdriver.Remote(
command_executor="http://SERVER_HOST:4444",
options=options,
)
try:
driver.get("https://example.com")
time.sleep(30) # demonstration only; use explicit waits in a test
finally:
driver.quit()
Replace SERVER_HOST with the private hostname or address reachable by the test client. The Grid connection and the visual connection can come from different networks, provided both are intentionally routed.
4. Open the noVNC viewer
From an authorized workstation, browse to http://SERVER_HOST:7900/ (or the HTTPS URL supplied by your reverse proxy). The noVNC page connects to the VNC server in the container and displays the desktop. If the browser is running headlessly without a desktop/VNC stack, there is nothing for noVNC to show.

Putting noVNC on an internet-reachable, controlled endpoint
Internet reachability should be treated as an access-control project, not as a side effect of Docker’s -p option. A practical design keeps the Selenium Grid and VNC services on a private network and exposes only an authenticated viewer entry point.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Place the host behind a firewall or private network and allow only the test clients and approved viewers.
- Terminate TLS at an HTTPS reverse proxy; do not send credentials or session traffic over an unencrypted public connection.
- Require authentication at the proxy or an equivalent identity boundary. Restrict Grid, VNC and noVNC routes separately when possible.
- Forward WebSocket upgrades from the proxy to the noVNC service. A page that loads while its WebSocket is blocked will not show the desktop.
- Use short-lived access, network allow-lists and audit logs for temporary debugging sessions.
- Avoid exposing port 4444 or a raw VNC TCP port directly to the public internet unless your security architecture explicitly requires it and protects it.
The Docker examples establish the ports; they do not prescribe one complete secure internet deployment. Test the route from an external network and confirm that the viewer cannot reach sessions it was not authorized to see.
Running noVNC without Docker
For a non-container installation, assemble four components:
- A browser running in a desktop session (for example, an X11 or equivalent display).
- A VNC server attached to that display.
- noVNC, the browser-based VNC client. The project describes noVNC as both an HTML VNC client JavaScript library and an application built on it noVNC project.
- A WebSocket path between the browser and the VNC server.
noVNC requires WebSockets. If the VNC server speaks only the traditional VNC TCP protocol, use websockify as the WebSocket-to-TCP bridge. The noVNC documentation also demonstrates binding such a proxy to localhost when the web server does not need to be exposed publicly. Bind locally and let your authenticated reverse proxy be the public boundary rather than binding an unauthenticated proxy to every interface.
Keep WebDriver BiDi out of the display path
WebDriver BiDi adds bidirectional WebSocket communication for browser-automation events such as network, logging and script events Selenium WebDriver BiDi documentation. It can make an event-aware test harness, but it does not transmit the desktop image. Use VNC/noVNC for an interactive view and BiDi when your automation needs event streams.

| Requirement | Use | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Watch and interact while the test runs | VNC plus noVNC | Live desktop in a browser |
| Inspect a run later | Docker Selenium video sidecar | Saved MP4 artifact, documented separately from noVNC |
| Capture a single page or final state | Screenshot API or WebDriver screenshot command | Image or PDF, not a continuous stream |
Choose the artifact before designing the network. A recording does not give an operator interactive control, and a noVNC session does not automatically create a durable MP4.

Alternative deployment: managed desktop browser testing
AWS Device Farm’s desktop browser testing guide documents Selenium-compatible RemoteWebDriver execution through an API-created, limited-time endpoint and says the service is billed per minute AWS Device Farm desktop browser testing guide. That is a managed automation option, not evidence of noVNC-like live desktop-view parity. Confirm the current region, browser coverage, access model and whether interactive viewing meets your requirement before choosing it. Current rates are not stated here; consult AWS’s service pages for pricing.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a clean image or PDF of a page—not an interactive stream—ScreenshotNeo is the practical alternative. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server: one GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It is not a replacement for watching a live Selenium desktop, but it avoids maintaining a browser-display stack for static captures.
For a one-call capture, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
Useful display and capture options
Browser geometry
Set a deterministic window or viewport size so the operator sees the same layout your assertions exercise. Device presets, custom viewports and retina scaling affect what is visible and how much bandwidth a high-resolution display consumes.
Session timing
Use explicit waits for a selector, a controlled delay or network-idle condition rather than relying on a fixed sleep. A viewer may connect after navigation has started; add a pause only when you intentionally want a human checkpoint.

Multiple sessions
With Hub/Node, map each session to the correct node and give viewers a clear session identifier. Do not publish one shared VNC endpoint that lets an observer guess or switch into another tenant’s desktop.
Credentials and sensitive data
Anything visible in the desktop can be read by a viewer or recorded. Use test accounts, redact secrets, avoid production data and expire access when the run ends.

The Grid session works, but port 7900 is blank or unreachable
- Confirm the container is a VNC-enabled image and that port 7900 is published.
- Check host firewall and cloud security rules.
- Verify that the browser is running in the container’s desktop session rather than a separate headless-only process.
The noVNC page loads but never connects
- Inspect the browser developer console for a failed WebSocket upgrade.
- Configure the reverse proxy to forward WebSocket headers and use the correct upstream path.
- If the VNC server lacks WebSocket support, put websockify between noVNC and the VNC TCP port.
The viewer sees the wrong browser or a closed session
- Match the viewer to the session’s node and keep the WebDriver session alive.
- Check test cleanup code:
driver.quit()closes the browser immediately. - For parallel runs, allocate separate nodes or separate authenticated viewer routes.
Navigation is slow or the browser crashes
- Increase container shared memory as shown in the Docker example.
- Use explicit waits and inspect browser logs instead of adding unlimited delays.
- Check CPU, memory, display resolution and network latency on the host.
Public access works without authentication
Stop exposing the endpoint and add an authenticated, TLS-protected boundary. A reachable URL is not an authorization system. Rotate any credentials that may have been visible during the exposure.
Pre-flight checklist
- RemoteWebDriver reaches the intended Grid URL.
- The selected image or host provides a desktop, VNC server and browser.
- noVNC (or an equivalent client) can complete its WebSocket handshake.
- Grid and visual endpoints have separate, least-privilege access rules.
- TLS, authentication, firewall policy and session expiry are tested from the intended networks.
- You have chosen live viewing, MP4 recording or static screenshots deliberately.
