net::ERR_ABORTED means Chromium canceled a request or navigation. It does not, by itself, prove that the server is down, the page timed out, or Puppeteer is defective. Fix it by identifying the operation that failed, then finding the code path, browser lifecycle event, or request rule that canceled it.
What net::ERR_ABORTED actually tells you
Chromium routes a canceled URL request through its cancellation path and reports ERR_ABORTED; navigation code surfaces the same condition as a canceled navigation. The code names the result, not the initiator. A request can be canceled by your interception handler, a competing navigation, a page or browser that is closing, or another lifecycle event. Your trace is needed to distinguish those cases.
| Failed operation | What to inspect first | Typical evidence |
|---|---|---|
page.goto() |
Main-frame URL, redirects, other navigation calls, page lifecycle | Navigation promise rejects while another action or close occurs |
waitForNavigation() |
Ordering between the wait and the click, form submit, or navigation action | The wait starts after navigation has already happened, or a second navigation wins |
| Intercepted request | Every branch in each request handler |
A request is left pending or an overly broad abort rule matches it |
| Download or special target | Target type and headless mode | A PDF or non-page resource is handled as ordinary HTML navigation |
1. Capture evidence before changing code
Do not begin with a blanket retry or a catch block that ignores every navigation error. Those approaches can hide the canceled operation. Save:

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({headless: true});
const page = await browser.newPage();
page.on('request', request => {
console.log('request', request.method(), request.resourceType(), request.url());
});
page.on('requestfailed', request => {
console.log('requestfailed', request.url(), request.failure());
});
page.on('framenavigated', frame => {
console.log('navigated', frame.url());
});
page.on('close', () => console.log('page closed'));
try {
const response = await page.goto('https://example.com', {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
timeout: 30000
});
console.log('status', response && response.status());
} catch (error) {
console.error('navigation error', error);
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Run this against a minimal reproduction, not the whole application. The request and frame logs help establish whether the failure is on the main document, a subresource, or a later navigation.
2. Audit request interception completely
Search for page.setRequestInterception(true) and every listener attached to the request event. Once interception is enabled, each request stalls until it is continued, answered, deliberately aborted, or completed from the browser cache. The Puppeteer project states: “Once request interception is enabled, every request will stall unless it’s continued, responded to or aborted; or completed using the browser cache.”
Verify that every possible branch reaches exactly one terminal action. Keep abort predicates narrow and log the URL, resource type, and reason before intentionally aborting.
await page.setRequestInterception(true);
page.on('request', request => {
const url = request.url();
const type = request.resourceType();
if (type === 'image' && url.includes('/tracking-pixel')) {
console.log('aborting intentionally', type, url);
return request.abort();
}
if (url.includes('/api/')) {
console.log('continuing API request', url);
return request.continue();
}
return request.continue();
});
Common interception mistakes include an if branch that returns without calling anything, a rule that aborts every request containing a substring such as analytics, and multiple listeners that each try to resolve the same request. Temporarily disable interception. If the navigation succeeds without it, re-enable rules one at a time and log each decision.
3. Check for competing navigation and page lifecycle changes
Trace the code around the rejected promise. Look for a second goto(), a link or form action that starts before the first navigation resolves, a test that opens a new page and closes the old one, or a handler that aborts the main-frame request. Chromium can report the resulting cancellation as ERR_ABORTED, but only your log can identify which event occurred first.

When a user action is expected to navigate, coordinate the action and the wait rather than starting the wait afterward:
const navigation = page.waitForNavigation({
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
timeout: 30000
});
await page.click('a.next-page');
await navigation;
Use this pattern only when the trace shows a click or submit causing the navigation. Calling waitForNavigation() after the navigation has already happened can leave you waiting for an event that will never arrive. Also check that no page.close(), browser.close(), context replacement, or test teardown runs in a finally block before the pending navigation settles.
4. Separate cancellation from timeout and HTTP status
A timeout is not ERR_ABORTED
A timeout means Puppeteer waited longer than the configured limit. ERR_ABORTED means Chromium reported cancellation. Puppeteer provides default navigation and general timeout controls plus per-operation timeout options:
page.setDefaultNavigationTimeout(45000);
page.setDefaultTimeout(30000);
await page.goto('https://example.com', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
timeout: 45000
});
Increase a timeout only when the observed error is a timeout or the page is demonstrably slow. A larger timeout cannot repair an interception rule, a second navigation, or a closed page.
HTTP status is a separate question
A fulfilled navigation promise is not an assertion that the server returned HTTP 200. In headless shell, Puppeteer documents that goto() does not throw for valid HTTP statuses such as 404 and 500. Inspect the response when status matters:

- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
const response = await page.goto('https://example.com/missing', {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded'
});
if (response) {
console.log(response.status(), response.url());
}
Do not turn a status check into a retry loop for an unrelated aborted navigation.

5. Verify the browser executable, version, and target
Puppeteer downloads a specific Chrome version by default. If you select another installation with executablePath, make that choice deliberate and compatible with your installed Puppeteer version. Log the path used by your launcher and remove ambiguity between a downloaded browser, a system Chromium package, and a CI image.
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
headless: true,
executablePath: process.env.CHROME_BIN || undefined
});
Compare the browser version in the launch environment with the Puppeteer version in your lockfile. A mismatch does not automatically cause ERR_ABORTED, but it is an important variable to eliminate before blaming network connectivity.
PDF targets need a special check
Puppeteer’s page API warns that headless shell does not support navigation to PDF documents. If the failing URL is a PDF, use a supported full Chrome path or a direct HTTP download workflow appropriate for your application. Treating a PDF navigation failure as a generic webpage problem can send debugging in the wrong direction.
6. Distinguish ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT
Read the spelling in the actual log. Puppeteer documents a narrow HTTPS-first case where navigating to a remote http:// URL can produce net::ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT. That is a different error from net::ERR_ABORTED.

If—and only if—you have that exact error and situation, Puppeteer documents disabling Chrome’s HTTPS-first feature at launch:
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
headless: true,
args: ['--disable-features=HttpsFirstBalancedModeAutoEnable']
});
Do not apply this flag as a general fix for ERR_ABORTED; it changes a browser security behavior and does not address canceled requests.
A minimal, sequential reproduction
Once interception and lifecycle races are removed, reduce the failing path to one page, one navigation, and one close. This example records the response and preserves the original exception:
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async function reproduce() {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({headless: true});
const page = await browser.newPage();
page.setDefaultNavigationTimeout(30000);
try {
const target = process.argv[2] || 'https://example.com';
const response = await page.goto(target, {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
timeout: 30000
});
console.log({
finalUrl: page.url(),
status: response ? response.status() : null
});
} catch (error) {
console.error(error.stack || error);
process.exitCode = 1;
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
If this succeeds while the full application fails, add back your request interception, clicks, redirects, and teardown one change at a time. The first change that brings back the cancellation is the branch to inspect.
Reliability and performance choices that can affect diagnosis
- Use the narrowest
waitUntilcondition that matches your task. Waiting for network idle can expose long-lived analytics or websocket traffic; it does not convert a cancellation into a timeout. - Keep navigation and page teardown in one ownership path. Test runners should await the navigation promise before closing the page or browser.
- Block ads or trackers only with explicit, logged rules. Resource blocking can accidentally remove scripts that trigger the navigation you need.
- Use retries only after you classify the failure. Retrying a deterministic interception or lifecycle bug creates noise and can hide the first useful trace.
- Pin the Puppeteer dependency and make the browser executable choice explicit in CI. Record both versions with each failure so an image update is visible.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a clean image or PDF rather than debugging Chromium itself, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One request captures a URL without you managing a Puppeteer browser:
Best Value
- 【INTEGRATED SPEAKERS】Whether you're at work or in the midst of an intense gaming session, our built-in speakers provide rich and seamless audio, all while keeping your desk clutter-free.
- 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. The same request from Python is:
import requests
r = requests.get(
'https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot',
params={'access_key': 'YOUR_API_KEY', 'url': 'https://stripe.com'},
timeout=90
)
open('shot.webp', 'wb').write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Response headers identify the page verdict and whether the shot was billed.
It also includes an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Features include full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and page-range controls, HTML/CSS rendering, custom JavaScript and CSS, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, selector or network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, TTL-based caching, signed public-image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Common parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work.

FAQ
How should a CI system make browser changes visible?
Log the Puppeteer package version, resolved executable path, browser version, operating-system image identifier, and the target URL with secrets removed at startup. Store those values with the failure artifact so a browser-image change can be compared with a known-good run.
What information should be removed from a shared error report?
Remove usernames, passwords, access tokens, signed URLs, session identifiers, private hostnames, and sensitive query parameters. Preserve the error code, operation name, redirect shape, resource type, and timing; those details are usually enough to classify the cancellation without exposing credentials.
