To capture a whole webpage in desktop Chrome, install a full-page capture extension such as GoFullPage or FireShot, open the page, and start the extension from the active tab. It scrolls below the fold and combines the visible sections into a single capture. Review the result for missing lazy-loaded content, sticky headers, or clipped inner scroll areas before you share it. If you do not want to install an extension, Chrome DevTools can capture a full-size screenshot, while Print to PDF is a useful alternative when a document rather than an image will do.
How a full-page screenshot works
A standard screenshot records only the part of a webpage currently visible in the browser window. A full-page extension goes further: it scrolls through the page and assembles the sections into a longer image. This is useful for archiving a long article, sharing a complete page, or documenting a layout that extends below the fold.
Because the extension captures a page as it scrolls, the result is not always identical to a single static rendering. Lazy-loaded images may not appear until the page is scrolled; sticky elements can repeat or shift; and independently scrolling panels may need special handling. Inspect the finished file rather than assuming the capture is complete.

Capture a full webpage with an extension
- Open the page in desktop Chrome. Navigate to the webpage you want to capture. If it has images or other content that loads as you scroll, wait for the initial page load and let visible elements settle.
- Install a reputable extension. Find GoFullPage or FireShot in the Chrome Web Store. Before installing, check the developer identity, requested permissions, privacy policy, update date, and recent reviews.
- Pin the extension. Use Chrome’s Extensions menu to pin its icon to the toolbar, so you can start a capture from the target tab.
- Start the capture. Make the target page active and click the extension icon. GoFullPage also documents Alt+Shift+P as a shortcut. Follow the extension’s on-screen instructions and avoid switching tabs while it scrolls and assembles the page.
- Review the result. Check the top, middle, and bottom, as well as any embedded frames or inner scrollable areas. Look for blank sections, repeated or clipped sticky headers, missing images, and content obscured by consent banners or popups.
- Export in the format you need. Choose PNG or JPEG for an image. Choose PDF when the extension offers it and you need a document-style export. Available formats and editing features differ by extension and, in some cases, plan.
When GoFullPage is a good fit
GoFullPage focuses on capturing the whole page and stitching its sections. Its Chrome Web Store listing says it handles inner scrollable elements and embedded iframes, and offers PNG, JPEG, and PDF export. The listing also says its developer will not collect or use user data; treat that as the developer’s disclosure, and still review the extension’s permissions and policy for your own use case.
When FireShot is a good fit
FireShot provides several capture modes beyond the entire page, including a visible area, a selected area, a scrolling area, and all tabs. Its listing describes PDF, JPEG, GIF, and PNG export, local storage, and offline operation. FireShot’s statement that a screenshot is stored locally and “never leaves your computer” is a publisher claim, not an independently audited guarantee. Check the current plan and privacy details, especially if you use advanced editing or batch features.

Prepare the page so the capture is complete
- Trigger lazy-loaded content. If images or sections appear only as you scroll, scroll through the page once and wait for them to load before starting the capture.
- Account for dynamic elements. Animations, changing feeds, rotating banners, and live data can change while the extension works. Pause or dismiss them if possible, then inspect the saved image.
- Watch fixed and sticky UI. A header pinned to the top of the window may appear in an unexpected position or repeat in a stitched image. Cookie banners and popups can cover the page; close them if appropriate and allowed before capture.
- Check nested scrolling areas. A panel with its own scrollbar is not the same as the main page. Verify that its relevant content appears; GoFullPage lists support for inner scrollable elements, but the final output remains the check.
- Keep the target tab active. Let the capture finish without changing tabs or interacting with the page unless the extension prompts you to do so.
Capture without an extension
Use Chrome DevTools for a full-size screenshot
Chrome support guidance points to the DevTools Command Menu and the “Capture full size screenshot” command. Open DevTools, bring up its Command Menu, search for that command, and run it while the target page is open. The precise keystroke and menu behavior can differ across Chrome versions and managed environments, so use the Command Menu search rather than relying on a shortcut if it does not open as expected.
This is handy for an occasional capture when you do not want to add an extension. If the command is missing or the output is not what you need, use a full-page extension or print the page to PDF.

Print a long page to PDF
Use Chrome’s print dialog and select a PDF destination to save a document-style copy. Printing can preserve selectable text and links, which an image cannot. However, websites can have print-specific styles, so pagination, backgrounds, and layout may differ from the live page. Open the exported PDF and check that the important content is present.
Privacy and safety before capturing
- Review who publishes the extension, what permissions it requests, its privacy policy, its update date, and current user feedback in the Chrome Web Store.
- Avoid capturing passwords, payment details, private dashboards, or personal information unless the extension’s data handling is acceptable under your policy.
- Do not interpret a store listing’s privacy statement as an independent audit. FireShot’s local-storage statement and GoFullPage’s data disclosure are publisher-provided claims.
- For sensitive material, consider whether a built-in browser workflow is preferable to adding an extension, and store or share the resulting file securely.
Troubleshoot incomplete or awkward screenshots
The bottom of the page is missing
Confirm that the capture completed, keep the target tab active while it runs, and try again after waiting for the page to finish loading. Very large pages may be split into multiple images, particularly with GoFullPage; check for additional output rather than assuming the first image is the whole capture.

Images or sections are blank
Some sites load content only when it approaches the viewport. Scroll through the page first and wait for images and sections to appear, then recapture. If content depends on a login or permission, confirm you are authorized and that it is visible in the browser before capture.
A sticky header or popup obscures content
Close cookie banners, newsletters, or other overlays when the site permits it. A fixed header can behave differently as the extension scrolls; if the capture remains hard to read, try another capture method or use Print to PDF for a document-like record.
An inner panel is clipped
Check whether the content has its own scrollbar and whether the extension supports that page structure. GoFullPage lists support for inner scrollable elements and embedded iframes, but complicated page behavior can still require manual review. Capture the panel separately if the extension’s selection or scrolling-area mode supports it.

The extension is unavailable or blocked
Browser policies can restrict extension installation or DevTools commands, especially on managed devices. Follow your organization’s rules; for a permitted one-off capture, try Print to PDF or an approved browser workflow instead.
