Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe most reliable website image viewer starts as a normal, usable gallery: semantic links, descriptive alternative text and a responsive layout. JavaScript then enhances it with a larger preview, lightbox controls, keyboard navigation, live position announcements and focus restoration. If JavaScript fails, each thumbnail still opens its full-size image.
This implementation uses a manually controlled viewer rather than an auto-rotating carousel. Manual navigation is easier to discover and avoids motion problems; if you later add rotation, provide an obvious pause/stop control and stop movement after user interaction.
Choose the interaction before writing code
A static gallery, carousel and lightbox solve different problems. A static grid is best when comparison and scanning matter. A carousel shows one item at a time but can hide content and introduce motion. A lightbox keeps the page context while temporarily presenting a larger image.
| Pattern | Keyboard and screen-reader behavior | Touch and loading implications | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Responsive grid | Every linked image is a normal, discoverable target; no modal focus management is needed. | Many thumbnails are visible; use appropriately sized sources to control transfer. | Visitors should compare several images or captions. |
| Manual gallery | Buttons change one selected item; announce the position and expose the active thumbnail. | Good for small screens because only one large image is shown. | You need a compact viewer without an overlay. |
| Lightbox dialog | Requires a close button, Escape handling, trapped or isolated background focus, and focus restoration. | Large files load on demand; the overlay needs comfortable touch targets. | A user wants an immersive, larger version without leaving the page. |
W3C WAI requires carousel movement to be pausable because motion can be distracting, and all carousel controls must be keyboard operable (WAI carousel guidance). This example therefore has no automatic rotation.

1. Define accessible image data and semantic markup
Each item has a thumbnail, a full-size source, concise alternative text and an optional caption. Informative images need an alt description of their essential information; decorative images use alt="". A thumbnail acting as a control should describe the destination or action. The WAI images tutorial explains these distinctions.
Put the collection in a labeled region. The links are the no-JavaScript fallback; activating one navigates directly to the full image.

Use real button elements for commands, not clickable divs. Generic elements do not provide the semantics or keyboard behavior assistive technology expects (MDN button guidance).
2. Create a responsive, stable layout
Reserve space with intrinsic width and height values (or an aspect-ratio box) to reduce layout shifting. Keep the displayed image inside the viewport, preserve visible focus indicators and provide sufficient contrast.

3. Add selected-image state and controls
Keep one index. Every selection updates the source, alt text, caption, position text and selected state in one transaction. The code below uses event delegation for the thumbnail links, wraps previous/next navigation, and remembers the last opener.
const items = [
{ large: 'images/coast-1-large.jpg', alt: 'A footpath above a rocky coast at sunrise', caption: 'Sunrise above the coastal footpath.' },
{ large: 'images/coast-2-large.jpg', alt: 'A lighthouse beside the sea', caption: 'Lighthouse beside the sea.' },
{ large: 'images/coast-3-large.jpg', alt: 'Waves breaking below dark cliffs', caption: 'Waves below the cliffs.' },
{ large: 'images/coast-4-large.jpg', alt: 'A narrow path through coastal grass', caption: 'Path through coastal grass.' }
];
const main = document.querySelector('#main-image');
const caption = document.querySelector('#caption');
const position = document.querySelector('#position');
const thumbs = [...document.querySelectorAll('.thumb')];
let current = 0;
let opener = null;
function selectImage(index) {
current = (index + items.length) % items.length;
const item = items[current];
main.src = item.large;
main.alt = item.alt;
caption.textContent = item.caption;
position.textContent = `Image ${current + 1} of ${items.length}: ${item.caption}`;
thumbs.forEach((thumb, i) => {
const selected = i === current;
thumb.classList.toggle('is-selected', selected);
if (selected) thumb.setAttribute('aria-current', 'true');
else thumb.removeAttribute('aria-current');
});
}
thumbs.forEach((thumb) => thumb.addEventListener('click', (event) => {
event.preventDefault();
selectImage(Number(thumb.dataset.index));
}));
document.querySelector('#previous').addEventListener('click', () => selectImage(current - 1));
document.querySelector('#next').addEventListener('click', () => selectImage(current + 1));
selectImage(0);
If wraparound is surprising for your audience, replace the modulo expression with clamped indexes and disable the previous button at zero and next at the last item. Either behavior is acceptable when it is consistent and communicated.
4. Turn the viewer into a modal lightbox
The native <dialog> element supplies modal behavior in current browsers. Keep the underlying link fallback, expose a visible close button, close on Escape, and return focus to the control that opened the dialog. A modal must not leave background controls accidentally reachable.
<dialog id="lightbox" aria-labelledby="lightbox-title">
<h2 id="lightbox-title">Larger image</h2>
<button type="button" id="close-lightbox">Close</button>
<img id="lightbox-image" alt="">
<p id="lightbox-caption"></p>
</dialog>
const dialog = document.querySelector('#lightbox');
const lightboxImage = document.querySelector('#lightbox-image');
const lightboxCaption = document.querySelector('#lightbox-caption');
document.querySelector('#open-lightbox').addEventListener('click', (event) => {
opener = event.currentTarget;
const item = items[current];
lightboxImage.src = item.large;
lightboxImage.alt = item.alt;
lightboxCaption.textContent = item.caption;
dialog.showModal();
document.querySelector('#close-lightbox').focus();
});
document.querySelector('#close-lightbox').addEventListener('click', () => dialog.close());
dialog.addEventListener('close', () => { if (opener) opener.focus(); });
dialog.addEventListener('click', (event) => {
if (event.target === dialog) dialog.close();
});
window.addEventListener('keydown', (event) => {
if (!dialog.open) return;
if (event.key === 'ArrowRight') { selectImage(current + 1); lightboxImage.src = items[current].large; lightboxImage.alt = items[current].alt; lightboxCaption.textContent = items[current].caption; }
if (event.key === 'ArrowLeft') { selectImage(current - 1); lightboxImage.src = items[current].large; lightboxImage.alt = items[current].alt; lightboxCaption.textContent = items[current].caption; }
});
For older browsers without dialog, use a well-tested dialog implementation or keep the non-modal linked-image behavior. Do not claim a library is accessible without checking its current documentation and actual keyboard and screen-reader behavior.

5. Images, loading and responsive performance
- Generate thumbnail files instead of scaling multi-megapixel originals into every grid cell.
- Use responsive sources with
srcsetandsizeswhen you have multiple widths; retain explicit dimensions to reserve layout space. - Load below-the-fold thumbnails with
loading="lazy", but do not lazy-load the initially visible main image. - Show a loading state while a large image downloads and handle its
errorevent with a useful message or fallback link. - Test narrow screens, touch targets, browser zoom, high-contrast settings, reduced-motion preferences, slow connections and broken URLs.
These are implementation recommendations rather than a promise of a particular speed improvement. Measure your own pages and image files.
6. Common failures and fixes
Clicking a thumbnail navigates away
That is the intentional fallback when JavaScript is absent. If JavaScript is loaded, confirm the script runs after the markup (use defer on the script tag), and that the click handler calls preventDefault().
Screen readers announce the wrong image
Update src, alt, caption, live position text and the active thumbnail together. Do not leave a filename as alt text. Decorative imagery should have an empty alt attribute.
Keyboard focus disappears in the lightbox
Move focus to the close button after showModal(), provide Arrow-key controls only while open, close on Escape, and restore focus to the opener in the dialog’s close event.

The page jumps when images load
Supply accurate width/height attributes or an explicit aspect ratio. Avoid replacing a short thumbnail with a differently sized box after load.
Next and previous controls do nothing
Check that the selector IDs match the HTML, that items.length is non-zero, and that every data index is a number. Log the selected item while debugging, then remove diagnostic output before publishing.
Large images overwhelm mobile data
Serve smaller derivatives, defer nonessential images, and open the full-size resource only after an intentional activation. A lightbox is not a reason to preload every original.

If your goal is to obtain screenshots of pages rather than build an in-page viewer, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture it accepts the cookie/consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf—let Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients request captures.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the complete parameter list and options in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. The API supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element shots, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper settings and page ranges, HTML/CSS input, custom JavaScript and CSS, clicks, selector/delay/network-idle waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which eases migration.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should every thumbnail be a button?
Use a button when it changes an in-page viewer. Use a normal link when it should open the full image, which preserves the no-JavaScript fallback. Do not use a non-semantic element styled to look clickable.
Do I need a carousel library?
No. A small gallery can be implemented with the native elements and state shown here. Add a dependency only after checking its current keyboard, focus, reduced-motion and screen-reader behavior.
How should I deep-link to one image?
Store an image identifier in the URL hash or query string, select that item on load, and update the URL with History API methods when selection changes. Keep the direct image link valid so copied links still work.
