“HTML thumbnail” can mean three different things: an image shown inside a page, a still displayed before a video plays, or an image preview when someone shares a page link. Use an <img> for the first, a video’s poster attribute for the second, and Open Graph metadata such as og:image for the third. They are not interchangeable.

Choose the thumbnail you mean

What you want Use Where it goes
An image visible in the page itself <img src="..." alt="..."> In the page body where the image belongs
A still image on a video player before playback <video poster="..."> On the video element
An image shown with a shared page link Open Graph metadata, including og:image In the document <head>

The Open Graph Protocol describes metadata that lets a web page become a rich object in a social graph. It is the relevant mechanism for a shared-page preview, not for placing an image in the page body or choosing a video player’s poster.

Add an image thumbnail to the page

To show a thumbnail as part of your page content, add an image element at the point where it should appear. Replace the example path and alt text with values for your own image:

<img src="/images/thumbnail.jpg" alt="A brief description of the image" width="320" height="180">

The src value must point to an image that resolves for the people viewing the page. The example uses a site-relative path; if the file is elsewhere, use its actual path or URL. The alt text should explain the image’s content or purpose for readers who cannot see it. MDN notes that alternative text is useful to screen-reader users and can appear when an image cannot be loaded.

Choose useful alt text

Describe what matters in the image in context. Avoid using “thumbnail” as the whole description if that does not tell the reader what is pictured. If a nearby caption already provides context, write alt text that adds the image’s relevant information rather than simply repeating that caption.

Set dimensions that fit the design

The example includes width and height attributes to communicate the intended display dimensions. Change them to suit your layout and image; the sample values are not a required thumbnail size. Check that the actual image path works and that the chosen dimensions suit the space in which the thumbnail appears.

Keep the image and its description aligned

A thumbnail is still an image, so the alt text should describe the image rather than promise an action it does not perform. If the thumbnail is also a link, make sure the link itself has an understandable purpose in the surrounding page.

Show a still image before a video plays

For a video player cover, set the poster attribute on the <video> element. The poster is the image shown while the video downloads; it does not set the preview image for a shared page URL.

The Open Graph Protocol lists og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url among the basic properties for describing a page. Its image metadata guidance describes og:image:alt as a description of the image’s content, not a caption. Keep the title and canonical page URL specific to the page being shared, and use an image URL that identifies the intended representative image.

Do not confuse page and image URLs

og:url identifies the page; og:image identifies the image you want associated with it. They serve different purposes. The Open Graph tags belong in the document head, not where an in-page image is inserted.

Do not assume every service renders the same preview

Adding metadata gives a platform information to interpret; HTML alone does not guarantee that every social or messaging service will show an identical preview. The available guidance does not establish a universal crop, display size, update delay, or cache-refresh procedure, so do not promise those outcomes based only on these tags.

Use consistent thumbnail metadata for video search

For video pages intended to appear in Google Search, Google’s video guidance calls for a valid thumbnail at a stable URL. It recognizes structured data, video sitemaps, and Open Graph protocol as metadata sources. If you declare a thumbnail in more than one of those places for the same video, keep the thumbnail URL consistent. Consult Google Search Central’s current video documentation for the applicable requirements rather than assuming an Open Graph tag alone guarantees a particular search result presentation.

Apple Messages has a video-specific qualification

Apple Developer Documentation, TN3156, advises using a direct link to a video asset through a meta tag if you want a video in the Messages preview, rather than referencing an embeddable video page. Apple also says videos that require embedding HTML will not play inline. This guidance is specific to Apple Messages; it is not a universal rule for other platforms.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a thumbnail image from a rendered page rather than a hand-authored image, a screenshot API can capture a page URL as an image. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-call endpoint can return a screenshot as PNG, JPEG, or WebP, or a PDF. For API parameters and output details, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/page -o thumbnail.webp

Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and the example URL with the page you want to capture. This captures the rendered page; it does not write Open Graph tags into your HTML or guarantee how a sharing service will display the resulting image. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step able to be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See ScreenshotNeo for the service. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

Troubleshoot a thumbnail that does not appear

The in-page image is broken

  • Check that the src path points to the image you intend to use and resolves when the page is viewed.
  • Confirm the image file is actually available at that path. The HTML element cannot display an image that cannot be loaded.
  • Check that you are editing the page body for an in-page image; Open Graph metadata belongs in the head and does not insert a visible image into page content.

The video has no cover image

  • Confirm the video element has a poster value pointing to the intended still image.
  • Check that the poster path is valid. A poster is the player’s pre-play image, not the metadata for a shared page preview.

A shared link shows an unexpected or missing image

  • Check that the intended image URL is in og:image, while the page URL is in og:url.
  • Confirm that the relevant properties are in the document head and that the page has a meaningful og:title and og:type.
  • Provide og:image:alt to describe the image, and keep metadata thumbnail URLs consistent where they are declared in multiple places for a video.
  • Do not infer a universal refresh time or crop from the markup. Platform behavior varies, and the cited guidance does not specify a general cache-reset method.

A video preview behaves differently in Apple Messages

If your intended outcome is an inline video preview in Messages, follow Apple Developer Documentation TN3156: its advice is to use a direct video asset link in a meta tag rather than an embeddable video page. That qualification is for Messages, not all sharing services.

Quick implementation checklist

  • Decide whether the thumbnail belongs in page content, on a video player, or in a shared-link preview.
  • Use the matching mechanism: <img>, <video poster>, or Open Graph metadata.
  • Use a real image path or URL and describe the image with appropriate alt text.
  • For shared pages, distinguish og:url (the page) from og:image (the preview image).
  • For video search metadata, use a stable thumbnail URL and keep it consistent across metadata sources.
  • Check the result in the actual context you care about; markup does not ensure every platform renders an identical preview.
