If GitHub Copilot CLI says Failed to connect to MCP server 'github-mcp-server' or reports fetch failed, the message alone does not identify the cause. Start by inspecting the exact server entry with /mcp show github-mcp-server, then compare its endpoint and status with the client logs. Check for a second GitHub entry and verify any credential variable in the configuration used by the failing client. GitHub issue reports document several different failure patterns, but do not establish one universal cause or a confirmed fix for every setup.
What the error does—and does not—tell you
GitHub identifies github/github-mcp-server as its official MCP Server project. But the phrase “failed to connect” is a client-reported symptom, not a diagnosis. The relevant Copilot CLI reports show different server names, endpoints, and errors; a separate GitHub MCP Server issue documents an unset token variable in a Codex setup. Those reports are useful clues, not proof that the same cause applies to your installation.
In particular, fetch failed does not, by itself, tell you whether the problem is the selected server entry, a credential, or another part of the request path. Nor do the reports establish a single relogin, certificate, network, upgrade, or downgrade procedure that fixes all cases. Use the client’s own entry details and logs before changing configuration.
Diagnose the failing entry in Copilot CLI
1. Inspect the named server
Run the command shown in the Copilot CLI error or issue report:

/mcp show github-mcp-server
Record the server’s name, type or transport, URL, status, and complete error. A March 2026 Copilot CLI report showed an HTTP server at https://api.business.githubcopilot.com/mcp/readonly with status failed and error fetch failed. That is an example from one reported configuration, not a default endpoint to copy into every setup. See Copilot CLI issue #2282.
If the command displays a different URL or a different error, diagnose the entry actually shown. Do not infer that your endpoint should match an enterprise URL mentioned in someone else’s issue.

2. Read the client logs around the failure
Use the logs from the same client session that produced the warning. Look for the sequence of events, not just the final summary line: whether the remote client started, whether the transport closed, and what error followed. In a Windows report against Copilot CLI 1.0.51, the user described the remote client starting, the transport closing, and then TypeError: fetch failed. The log sequence provides more context than the short startup warning, but it does not independently prove the underlying cause. The report is at Copilot CLI issue #3455.
Keep the full relevant error text and the named server entry together. A log from one entry cannot establish what happened to a different entry with a similar “GitHub MCP” label.

3. Check whether more than one GitHub server is configured
Compare every visible GitHub-related entry separately. A Copilot CLI report describes a workspace entry named github at https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/ and a distinct built-in entry named github-mcp-server at https://api.enterprise.githubcopilot.com/mcp/readonly. In that report, the workspace entry was described as failed while the built-in one appeared operational. It is a reason to distinguish entries—not evidence that duplicate entries always cause failures. See Copilot CLI issue #1807.
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Entry name | The client error may name one entry while another GitHub-related entry is also present. |
| Source or scope | Note whether the entry is workspace-configured or built in, if the client shows that distinction. |
| Endpoint URL | Different entries in the report used different URLs; do not assume they point to the same server. |
| Type or transport | Record the type shown for the particular entry rather than assuming all GitHub MCP entries use the same setup. |
| Status and error | Compare the client’s reported status and full error for each entry. |
If the named server is not the one you expected, first establish which entry the client is reporting. Avoid removing or replacing a working entry solely because a different one has a similar name.

Check credentials in the client that is failing
Confirm that the configuration belongs to the actual client reporting the error. A GitHub MCP Server issue filed by a Codex user shows a startup error that explicitly says the configured github_pat_(token) environment variable was not set; its sample configuration uses bearer_token_env_var. That is a concrete missing-variable example for that Codex setup, not proof that a Copilot CLI fetch failed has the same cause. See GitHub MCP Server issue #1633.
- Read the error for the exact variable name it expects.
- Check that the variable is set in the environment available to the process that launches the affected client—not merely in a different terminal, application, or client configuration.
- Check that the active configuration refers to the intended variable and that its name matches exactly.
- Do not paste or publish the token value when sharing logs or configuration excerpts.
If the error does not mention a missing token or variable, do not treat the Codex example as confirmation of an authentication problem. The Copilot CLI and Codex reports describe different client setups.

Interpret HTTP 401 and connection tests cautiously
In the Windows Copilot CLI 1.0.51 report, the user said that cURL and ordinary Node.js fetch requests to the endpoint returned HTTP 401. The user treated that response as evidence that the endpoint was reachable. They also reported that a fresh Copilot login and testing with --use-system-ca did not fix the CLI error. Those are observations from that report, not an official diagnostic guarantee, a complete test of the CLI’s request path, or a recommendation to apply those steps universally.
For your own case, keep the probe result in context: it describes what that test request received, not necessarily what the client’s full MCP connection attempt did. A response from a simple request does not establish that the specific entry, credentials, or client transport is configured correctly. Likewise, the reported failed attempts do not show that logging in again or changing certificate handling can never help; they show only that those steps did not resolve that user’s report.
What the Windows 1.0.51 report establishes
A user reported that after updating to GitHub Copilot CLI 1.0.51, the built-in github-mcp-server failed on Windows with fetch failed. The issue, opened May 21, 2026, names https://api.business.githubcopilot.com/mcp/readonly. The user also reported the 401 results and unsuccessful fresh-login and --use-system-ca attempts described above. The report documents a version- and platform-specific symptom; it does not establish a cause, a general regression, or a working remediation. The material available for that report did not confirm a maintainer-verified fix. Check the issue itself for any later status before treating it as current guidance: issue #3455.
Do not upgrade or downgrade solely on the basis of that report. It identifies the version involved in one user’s case, not a version recommendation or a confirmed release fix. Check the current status and discussion for your client version before deciding whether a version change is warranted.

A careful order for next steps
- Capture the exact error. Preserve the client name, server entry name, complete message, and relevant log sequence.
- Inspect that entry. In Copilot CLI, use
/mcp show github-mcp-serverwhen that is the named entry. Record its type, URL, status, and error. - Disambiguate entries. Compare workspace and built-in entries individually if both are present. Confirm which one the error names before changing either.
- Follow explicit credential errors. If the failing client names a missing variable, verify that variable in the configuration and process environment used by that client. Keep client-specific advice within its scope.
- Check issue status before a version change. The Windows 1.0.51 case is not, on its own, evidence of a confirmed regression or fix. Verify whether the report has since been updated.
- Report observations, not guesses. If asking for help, include platform, client and version, entry name, endpoint where safe to share, status, and relevant logs. Redact tokens and other sensitive values.
