The simplest free method is to render your HTML in Chrome or Firefox, open the print dialog, and choose the browser’s PDF destination. For repeatable conversions, save the markup as an .html file and use wkhtmltopdf from the command line. The right path depends on whether you have an open webpage, a saved file, or only a raw code snippet.
Choose the right starting point
- Open webpage: print the rendered page directly from your browser.
- Saved HTML file: open the file in Chrome or Firefox, then print it.
- Raw HTML code: save the snippet as a complete
.htmldocument first, open it, and print the rendered result. - Many pages or automated jobs: use a command-line renderer such as
wkhtmltopdf.
A browser prints the rendered document, not the characters in a code editor. If you want the source code itself as readable text, print or export it from your editor instead.
Convert an HTML page to PDF in Chrome
- Open the webpage or local HTML file in Chrome.
- Choose File → Print, or press
Ctrl+Pon Windows/Linux or⌘+Pon macOS. - In the destination list, select Save as PDF (the exact label can vary by operating system or locale).
- Set the page range, paper size, orientation, margins, scale, and any background-graphics option you need.
- Check the preview, click Save, choose a filename and folder, and confirm.
Chrome’s documented print workflow supports open pages, images, and files. See Google’s Chrome print instructions for current interface details.
Make the Chrome PDF match the design
- Use Landscape for wide tables, dashboards, and code listings.
- Reduce Scale or choose a larger paper size when content is clipped at the right edge.
- Increase margins only after checking that headers and footers do not consume usable space.
- Enable background graphics when color panels, shaded table cells, or hero sections matter.
- Use a page range to avoid exporting unrelated sections.
Convert an HTML page to PDF in Firefox
- Open the webpage or
.htmlfile in Firefox. - Open the application menu and choose Print….
- In the destination list, select Save to PDF.
- Review the preview and set orientation, pages, color, paper size, scale, margins, headers and footers, and background printing as required.
- Click Print, select a location, and save the PDF.
Mozilla documents these controls in How to print web pages in Firefox. Its warning is important: “Web pages can set themselves up to appear different on paper to how they look on screen, so don’t be surprised to see some changes.” Print CSS, responsive breakpoints, hidden navigation, and page-break rules can all change the output.

Save raw HTML code as a PDF
If your HTML is only a snippet, create a complete document before printing. This example gives the browser something it can render:

</html>- Paste the markup into a plain-text editor.
- Save it with an
.htmlextension, such asdocument.html. Ensure the editor does not append.txt. - Double-click the file or use your browser’s Open File command.
- Inspect the rendered page, then use the Chrome or Firefox print steps above.
Keep linked CSS, images, fonts, and JavaScript available at the paths used by the document. A missing relative asset can make the PDF look different from the browser preview. For source-code documentation, add a styled <pre> block; do not expect the print dialog to capture an editor’s syntax highlighting automatically.
Automate conversion with wkhtmltopdf
wkhtmltopdf is an open-source (LGPLv3) headless command-line renderer based on Qt WebKit. It accepts a URL or local file and writes a PDF, making it useful for repeatable jobs. Its usage manual documents paper size, orientation, margins, backgrounds, and other switches.
Basic commands

Treat it as usage syntax, not a guarantee that every modern site will render correctly. Qt WebKit may not match a current Chromium engine, particularly on script-heavy applications, modern CSS, authentication flows, or content that appears only after interaction.

When to use the command line
- Use it when the same conversion must run in a script, build pipeline, or scheduled job.
- Prefer browser printing for an occasional document or a page that depends on current browser JavaScript.
- Test representative pages before converting a large batch; the reviewed documentation does not establish universal fidelity, speed, or compatibility rankings.
PDF settings that prevent common layout problems
Page size, orientation, and scale
Choose a paper size used by your audience (such as A4 or Letter), then select portrait or landscape based on the widest element. Scale the page down only enough to prevent clipping; excessive reduction makes text hard to read.
Margins and page breaks
Use print preview to find headings stranded at the bottom of a page, tables split in awkward places, or content hidden behind browser headers and footers. CSS rules such as break-before, break-after, and break-inside can improve pagination in browsers that support them, but always verify the actual PDF.
Backgrounds, colors, and images
Background graphics are commonly disabled by default. Enable the relevant print-background option when a colored panel or shaded table conveys meaning. If an image is missing, confirm its URL, file permissions, and that it has finished loading before printing.
Screen layout versus print layout
Responsive and print-specific CSS may intentionally hide navigation, change fonts, or reflow columns. Compare the preview with the browser page rather than assuming the screen is the final document.

Troubleshoot a failed or inaccurate conversion
The PDF is blank
Confirm that the URL loads normally and that a local file contains valid, complete HTML. For JavaScript-rendered content, wait until the page is populated before printing. A command-line WebKit renderer may not execute the application code your current browser does.
Content is cut off or overlaps
Switch to landscape, lower scale slightly, widen the paper size, or reduce margins. Look for fixed-width containers and CSS positioned elements that exceed the printable area.
Colors or backgrounds disappeared
Enable background printing in the dialog. If the design still changes, inspect print media rules and contrast; some sites deliberately simplify color for paper.
Images, fonts, or styles are missing
Check relative paths from the HTML file’s location, mixed-content restrictions, blocked requests, and whether remote resources finished loading. Bundle critical assets locally when a repeatable export must not depend on a network request.

The local file will not open correctly
Verify the extension is truly .html, not .html.txt, and open it in the browser rather than an editor preview. If the page relies on server-side code, run it from the appropriate local development server instead of opening a template file directly.
wkhtmltopdf output differs from Chrome
This is expected when the page uses CSS or JavaScript features outside Qt WebKit’s behavior. Simplify the print stylesheet, try a browser-based workflow, or choose a renderer whose engine matches your production page.

Can I paste HTML directly into a browser print dialog?
Not through the documented Chrome and Firefox workflows. Save the markup as an .html file and render it first, or use a converter that explicitly accepts pasted HTML.
Why does my PDF look different from the webpage?
Print styles, responsive rules, disabled backgrounds, page breaks, and unfinished assets can all alter the output. Use print preview and adjust the relevant settings.
